KUALA LUMPUR – Former law minister Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim called for equal employment opportunities in Malaysia’s civil service.

In a post on social media yesterday, he also underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to eliminate discriminatory practices in both the public and private sectors.

“When I said more non-Malays should be employed in the civil service, some Malay friends were quick to point out to me that the Chinese won’t let Malays into their companies in the private sector.

“Well, the solution is to reduce and slowly eliminate discriminatory practices everywhere so we can have the best quality to serve the nation,” he said on X yesterday.

Zaid said that given the government’s pivotal role in shaping policies, it is only fair that the government reduce and eliminate discrimination against non-Malays in the civil service.

“Discrimination is terrible by whatever name it is called, and the private sector should be free of discrimination as well,” he added.

Recently, a Mandarin daily reported that the government will launch a nationwide campaign to encourage greater Chinese community participation in the public sector, starting in Melaka.

Political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Chan Ming Kai, said that the campaign is being conducted due to the low interest among the Chinese community in civil service roles.

He said that during the campaign, Chinese civil servants would share their work experiences with those interested in joining the public sector. – March 9, 2024
