Monday morning humour: UMNO Youth chief fumes as KK Super Mart hoists the ‘wrong’ banner

FRESH from peace-loving Malaysians urging the police to arrest him for sowing the seeds of discord among multi-racial Malaysians, defiant UMNO Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has dropped another bombshell – “we demanded an apology banner but they raised something else”.

The Merlimau state assemblyman was referring to a Rahmah sale banner that was hoisted by a KK Super Mart outlet in Melaka which runs afoul of the youth wing’s demand for an apology banner across all 881 outlets of the 24-hour convenience store chain following the emergence of 14 pairs of socks out of 18,000 pairs ordered having borne the “Allah” inscription on them.

Eventually, the furore of the Melaka state assemblyman for rural development, agriculture and food security was contained after the local authority (PBT) took down the said banner which according to Dr Akmal was hanged without proper permit.

“Simply raised the banner without the approval of the PBT nor permission from the Chief Minister to use his photograph,” lambasted the UMNO Youth head honcho in a Facebook post. “So, we got the PBT enforcement unit to act in accordance with the existing by-laws.”

Dr Akmal further chastised the KK Super mart management by reminding owner Datuk KK Chua that Muslim consumers will not fall for any ‘soft trick’ orchestrated by the convenience store chain to attract them back to its stores.

“Make any sale (promotions), sell cheap items anyway you wish, we shall stick to our stand to permanently #boycottKKmart,” he insisted. “We have dignity that cannot be bought! Thank you to the Melaka state PBT for its quick action”.

To re-cap, liberal-minded Muslims have vented their anger at Dr Akmal not only for tarnishing the spirit of forgiveness in tandem with the holy month of Ramadan but for his over-zealousness in his pursuit “to teach KK Super Mart and other traitors a lesson that they’ll never forget”.

Along the way, the Russia-trained medical doctor has even ticked off two elderly personalities – retailer and wholesaler Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin and former Wanita UMNO chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz – who reminded him that he has gone over-board with his action.

Whatever said and done, UMNO has backed the stance of its youth wing on the “Allah” socks controversy.

Its secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki who happens to be Dr Akmal’s predecessor said the matter was discussed during the party’s Supreme Council meeting, hence re-affirming UMNO’s steadfast commitment to upholding the sanctity of Islam.

Asyraf also claimed that the issue had not affected relations among the leaders of coalition parties within the unity government, including cabinet ministers.

But as one political observer puts it, this is not a “blanket endorsement for UMNO Youth to take matters into its own hand”.

“It’s more support for defending Islam. Not for going overboard. Akmal mustn’t pretends that its an endorsement for him to be an extremist. Anwar (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) will never tolerate that.” – March 25, 2024
