Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that he has asked Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to handle the controversial issue of socks imprinted with the word “Allah” on them courteously.
While stressing the need for the issue to be dealt with immediately and not taken lightly by anyone, Zahid said the matter must not be "ridden" by those with a specific agenda.
The Umno president said that while the government is confident that this will not happen again in the future, immediate steps will be taken to prevent the present situation from escalating.
"We (the government) don't want anyone to take it lightly, let alone take advantage.
"We must solve this problem immediately so that it is not misinterpreted, not ‘ridden’ by those who have an interest," he told the media at the Mara Trolak Science Junior College in Slim River, yesterday.
Footage of Zahid speaking was uploaded to the Hotspot news programme, on Astro AEC's social media.
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh
He said that Akmal, as the leader of the party's youth wing, had been asked to look into the matter courteously.
The issue of socks being sold at two KK Super Mart premises in Petaling Jaya elicited the anger of many Muslims who considered it an insult to their faith.
Umno Youth even mobilised a campaign to boycott the chain of convenience stores throughout the country, in addition to demanding that the company involved make put up an apology banner at all its premises.
At the same time, some parties called for calm and for the issue not to be viewed through a racial lens.
Zahid said the issue it should not be taken lightly even though KK Super Mart has apologised.

Dangdut parties, yes?
Being an UMNO Youth chief is a highly challenging but potentially rewarding position. The person must possess two super big balls. He will watch his paces, and always looks back at what his predecessors have done. Of course he copies them. His guru will remind him of the threshold, and that grey area, that if he carelessly treads, he might get into trouble. He will become their hero or villain. Never mind...many previous villainous UMNO Youth leaders have been quite forgotten by the rakyat as not only MELAYU MUDAH LUPA. Remember our Sungai Buloh /Kajang Prison VVIP inmate who sapu-ed the 1MDB money, who in October 1987, screamed at the TPCA Stadium that he would bathe the Chinese blood with his crooked dagger. In the year 2000, the Deputy UMNO Youth leader with his gang, climbed over the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall fence to demand an apology on the SUQIU issue or they would raze the building.
