Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal says the party never discussed the matter.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said Bersatu legal and constitution bureau deputy chairman Sasha Lyna Abdul Latiff was only airing her personal views on Taylor Swift’s concert.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has denied a report claiming that the party had called for the government to answer for Malaysia’s failure to secure Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

He was responding to a report by the New Straits Times, where Bersatu legal and constitution bureau deputy chairman Sasha Lyna Abdul Latiff was quoted as saying that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh must explain the missed opportunity.

“When did Bersatu ever discuss this? She (Sasha) is not a main leader of Bersatu to issue an official statement (on behalf) of the party on this matter.

“Her view is her own and doesn’t represent Bersatu’s. None of our Bersatu MPs ever raised this matter,” he said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In the report, Sasha claimed that discussions between the Malaysian government and Swift’s concert promoter began as early as 2022. However, the deal was never concluded, while neighbouring Singapore successfully secured exclusive rights to host her shows in the region.

Earlier today, Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu posted a tweet stating that it was indeed a missed opportunity.

“We have A-list artistes and content in our grasp via the arrangement with ASM Global. We must be more aggressive to get them in. The huge economic windfall is beyond politics,” Faizal said.

US-based ASM Global is an affiliate of Anschutz Entertainment Group and Swift’s concert promoter.

Earlier, FMT reported industry experts as saying that Swift’s concerts in Singapore were an expensive lesson for the government, as they could have helped boost the country’s economy.

FMT columnist Frankie D’Cruz had reported that Malaysia had the American pop star in its grasp in 2022, but lost her to Singapore a year later.

D’Cruz said that Swift was on the Malaysian government’s radar after it signed a contract with a US venue management company in 2022 to make Kuala Lumpur Sports City in Bukit Jalil a magnet for sports and live entertainment.

However, the deal was not capitalised on when Anwar became prime minister, and the American company was reduced to a consultant’s role for the optimisation of Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
