Proton car saleswoman told “to repent” for engaging in car blessing ritual for her non-Muslim customers
WHILE non-Muslim netizens praised her for “celebrating diversity”, Muslim netizens ticked off a Proton car saleswoman in Kulim, Kedah for engaging in syirik (polytheism) by facilitating “car blessing” ritual for her non-Muslim customers.
Nazirah Hasan, a Proton saleswoman in Kulim since 2009, has been practicing this tradition for all her non-Muslim customers for years by providing a full pineapple with its crown intact for good luck to her Chinese customers and a tray of four limes and a coconut for her Hindu customers.
“The guiding principle in my life is niat (intention). I did this out of respect for people of diverse faiths. It felt like the right thing to do in our multicultural society,” Free Malaysia Today (FMT) quoted her as saying.
But the tweet by the news portal on the X (previously Twitter) platform which has since been viewed 2.6 million times at the time of writing did not come down well which Muslim audience with netizen roti Gardenia cicah milo panas (@Beberuruang) deeming Nazirah’s action as a major sin for having committed syirik.
Many other Muslim netizens soon echoed such view, alluding to the fact that her customers are not to be blamed for they have their own beliefs and that it is only right to respect other religions and beliefs in Malaysia.
Some Muslim netizens suggested that she can be nice to her customers without getting involved with syirk while other wanted her to quickly repent for it is of utmost important for Muslims to be “Muslim first, not Malaysian first”.
But thankfully, there are still many sensible or open-minded Muslims who supported Nazirah’s goodwill gesture for “politicians and religious bigots have abused religion and race to segregate Malaysians” and that “only Allah knows best and her intentions might be that she just wants to make her customers happy”.
Whatever said and done, Nazirah did receive her 5-star testimony from a former customer as an “amazing salesperson”. – March 10, 2024
