The UN and France called for an independent investigation into Thursday's events in north Gaza, where at least 112 people were killed while waiting for an aid delivery. Egypt's foreign minister said he is hopeful of a cease-fire before Ramadan begins on March 10. Hamas claimed seven Israeli hostages were killed in Israeli bombardments. An Iranian Revolutionary Guards officer was killed in a suspected Israeli strike in Syria. The European Commission will pay 50 million euros to UNRWA but hold back on the rest of its funding until Israeli allegations of employees' participation in the October 7 massacre are investigated.

■ GAZA AID DEATHS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the killing of over 100 Gazans seeking humanitarian aid on Thursday requires an effective independent investigation. France's foreign minister also called for an independent inquiry. India expressed deep shock at Thursday's events.
  • South Africa said the incident breached the International Court of Justice's provisional orders in the case brought by Pretoria accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza. "An immediate and unconditional call for a ceasefire is now a moral and life-saving necessity," it said.

  • French President Macron called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza to provide humanitarian aid to civilians following the loss of lives on Thursday.

  • Hamas accuses Israel of firing at the crowd, while the IDF says that most people died from a stampede and truck drivers driving into the crowd. "We didn't fire at the aid seekers – neither from the air nor from the ground," IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari said.
