A Ukrainian Armed Forces pilot was reported on November 18 to have defected to Russia, with further details remaining uncertain.

A Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter pilot reportedly played a role in helping to organise the flight, although the aircraft used for the defection remains uncertain. The involvement of a Russian helicopter crew indicates that there may have been some communication with Russian forces planning the defection in advance.

The incident comes as defections by Ukrainian personnel have continued to rise, while morale has reportedly taken a blow due to the failure of a months long summer offensive against Russian positions, extreme casualty rates faced, the inability of new Western armaments to turn the tide of the conflict, and more recently the diversion of new Western arms supplies to Israel which will increasingly exacerbate Ukraine’s equipment shortages.

In the Air Force several of the country’s remaining top pilots were reportedly killed in combat in late August, with extreme losses among combat aviation units continuing to be reported

Reports from Western and Russian sources have consistently showed that the Ukrainian Military is forcing conscripted personnel into high intensity combat with little to no training, leading to growing reports both of personnel quickly surrendering, and of servicemen from more well trained loyalist units conducting executions to deter desertions.

Ukrainian defectors have in several cases gone on to serve on the frontlines with Russian forces, which has been strongly publicised by Russian state media.

While Russia has significantly increased its arms stockpiles by partially restoring Soviet era production rates, while also making acquisitions from North Korea which has a larger artillery force than the Russian Army itself, Ukraine’s dwindling supplies have led growing numbers of analysts to conclude that Kiev’s defeat is a near certainty and may be achieved decisively in 2024.
