KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 — Thai police are now offering to guard durian farms following a spate of thefts.

The Ao Cho police station in Muang district came up with the idea after farmers suffered massive losses from the looting, The Nation reported.

The first to sign up for the scheme was a 55-year-old farmer at the Huang Nam Khao subdistrict, who reportedly lost 1 million baht (RM129,594) worth of durians.

It is unknown how much farmers are charged for the service.

Ao Cho chief inspector Pol Maj Ariyachai Thima said millions worth of durians were reported stolen last year.

This led to police and farmers joining hands to design the scheme where police will patrol the farms of those who subscribe to the service more frequently, especially at night.

Patrols will be in two shifts — 6pm to midnight and midnight to dawn.

The surveillance is to continue until the King of Fruits are picked.

“We aim to provide peace of mind to farmers, who already have other things to worry about including drought and plummeting prices,” Ariyachai reportedly said.
