PAS MP calls on govt to ‘control’ foreign acts like Blackpink

KUALA LUMPUR: A PAS MP has called on the government to “control” the organising of concerts by foreign artistes such as Korean pop group Blackpink.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Nurul Amin Hamid (PN-Padang Terap) said such concerts had caused “a bit of unease” among Muslims.

“I want to raise an issue of concern for the Muslim community in the country… the concerts and performances from foreign artistes which are increasingly being held (here),” he said.
“Among them are artistes such as Westlife, OneRepublic, MAMAMOO, Jay Chou, and the most recent, the K-pop group Blackpink.
“Can’t the government control the organising of such foreign concerts, which are increasingly being given space in our country?” he asked.
The first-term MP said that the “flood” of fans at last Saturday’s Blackpink concert was not in line with the values of the country’s Muslim-majority population.
He added that the concert should not have been organised, especially in light of the floods which had hit three states.
Blackpink’s concert at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium reportedly attracted around 60,000 people and featured performances from local music legends Siti Nurhaliza and M Nasir.
PAS had previously condemned concerts held in the country by various international performers.
Last August, PAS Youth warned of nationwide protests unless scheduled concerts featuring international artistes were cancelled.
Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari called on the government to cancel such events as he said they encouraged hedonism and were incompatible with the norms and values of the Muslim way of life in Malaysia.
In 2016, it had called for a Selena Gomez concert to be banned, alleging it promoted “Western culture and hedonism”.
