Noraini pulls clear of Shahrizat in Umno Wanita battle


After a neck-and-neck battle between the two candidates for Wanita Umno chief, incumbent Noraini Ahmad has finally taken a substantial lead.

As of midnight, she led by a margin of 21 votes, having obtained 56 thus far.

Her opponent, Shahrizat Jalil, has 35 votes, based on results published by Umno.

However, Malaysiakini was informed that final results would only be made available on Sunday.

The two former ministers are seeking the 96 votes that are required to win simple majority support.

Noraini has held the top position since 2018, while her predecessor Shahrizat was Wanita Umno's chief from 2009 to 2018.

Meanwhile, for the Puteri Umno chief position, Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi is far ahead of her contenders.

Based on unofficial results published by the party, Nurul Amal obtained 52 votes as of 10.45pm today.

Trailing behind her in a seven-cornered fight is Dira Abu Zahar who has gotten 25 votes thus far.

The other five candidates are Lembah Pantai Puteri Umno head Dr Masliha Harun, Puteri Umno secretary Nurul Hazwani Haslan, Puteri Umno exco Fadhwa Anuar, and Pandan Puteri Umno chief Wan Noor Akyilah Wan Shapuddin.

Meanwhile, outgoing Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said on social media that Malacca state executive councillor Dr Akmal Salleh had unofficially won the race to succeed him.

“Akmal has won the support of 103 divisions, surpassing the 96 needed to win a simple majority of the total of 191 divisions. Congratulations!” said Asyraf.

Malaysiakini also understands that the son of Bersatu MP Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz is in the lead for the position of Umno Youth vice-chief.

Based on unofficial results provided by Umno sources, Ikmal Hazlan currently leads the race with 57 votes.
