MACC has son of political leader in its crosshairs, says source
The name of the suspect, a businessman, was leaked following the arrest of ‘Datuk Roy’.
An MACC officer and three others were detained last week after a report was filed by family members of a political leader.
PETALING JAYA: The son of a political leader is said to be on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s radar as the anti-graft agency widens its probe into the Jana Wibawa programme.
A source close to the matter said the arrest of “Datuk Roy” – believed to be the mastermind of a corruption case linked to the programme – had revealed that the politician’s son, a businessman, was also under investigation.
According to the source, the businessman’s name had been “leaked” after “Datuk Roy” obtained a list of names linked to the programme from an MACC contact, said to be a senior officer.
“This Datuk Roy then reached out to those on the list, offering to help prevent action from being taken against them, in return for a hefty payment,” the source told FMT.
He is believed to have received a sum of money from someone close to the political leader to help the businessman from being remanded.
The source also described “Datuk Roy”, whose real name is Hussein Nasir, as an opportunist who preyed on MACC suspects.
“He saw the opportunity to make money from those investigated in a high-profile case,” the source said.
On March 9, MACC detained four persons, including an MACC officer, after a report was lodged by family members of the political leader.
The Jana Wibawa programme was introduced in November 2020 by the Muhyiddin Yassin government as a Covid-19 stimulus initiative to help Bumiputera contractors.
Muhyiddin has since been charged with abuse of power and money laundering in relation to the project.
Last month, two other members of Bersatu were also charged with accepting bribes in connection with Jana Wibawa. They are Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad.
