PETALING JAYA: Former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has confirmed that she is no longer the senior adviser on economics and finance to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
She said she will be joining the secretariat formed by the advisory panel for the finance ministry as the co-chair.
“(Advisory committee chairman) Hassan (Marican) has invited me to join the advisory committee’s secretariat to help in their effort to strengthen the country’s and the rakyat’s economy,” she said in a statement.
“I humbly accept this responsibility, and with this new role, I will no longer serve as the senior adviser on economics and finance to the prime minister.
It was previously reported that Nurul Izzah had been appointed as Anwar’s senior adviser on economics and finance on Jan 3.
Meanwhile, Nurul Izzah expressed her gratitude for the support given by the public and government officials throughout her shortlived role in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and hoped that her new role as the secretariat’s co-chair will benefit the country.
“I am grateful to the advisory panel. Let us contribute to the country in whatever capacity,” she added.
Earlier today, the chairman of the advisory panel, Hassan Merican, announced that she had been invited to co-chair the secretariat together with Petronas senior manager Khairil Anuar Ramli in order to support the committee’s operations.
The decision to form the secretariat was made during the panel’s first meeting on Friday.
Her appointment as Anwar’s senior adviser drew flak, with detractors accusing Anwar of nepotism. He has since dismissed the claim, saying that she was qualified for the role and adding that she was not getting paid.

PETALING JAYA: Former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar will co-chair the secretariat of the newly-formed advisory panel for the finance ministry.
She has been named co-chair of the secretariat together with Petronas senior manager Khairil Anuar Ramli. Their role would be to support the advisory panel’s operations. The secretariat is located at the Petronas Twin Towers.
Advisory panel chairman Hassan Marican said the decision to form the secretariat was made during the panel’s first meeting on Friday.
The meeting, which was chaired by Hassan, also included the other committee members, namely FVSB executive chairman Ahmad Fuad Ali, Sarawak Energy Bhd chairman Abdul Hamed Sapawi, and economists Yeah Kim Leng and Rajah Rasiah.
Hassan said that the advisory panel’s primary role, among others, was to advise Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on ways to increase the nation’s revenue base and reduce the operating expenditure.
“The advisory panel will also advise the minister on matters related to subsidies, which includes reviewing and restructuring existing subsidies, and the provision of more holistic social protection,” he said in a statement.
Hassan said the panel would also advise on matters related to government-linked companies (GLC), including determining their relevance in the current context and consolidating them where appropriate, and other matters related to the national debt and good governance.
The panel reports directly to Anwar, who is also the finance minister, and will meet as frequently as needed.
The formation of the advisory panel was announced by Anwar last week, who said that its members would not be receiving any pay.

I think there is an unholy alliance of PN agitators and Internet activists who are determined that Nurul Izzah must have NO role in the national debates and conversations.
ReplyDeleteWhich is a shame.
She has much knowledge and talent to contribute, not just because she is Anwar's daughter.
Forcing Nurul Izzah out to work only in the private sector or just be a housewife, which is what many of her critics want, is a loss to the nation.
