Azmin takes a break from politics; next move unknown




Azmin lost badly last November when trying to defend his Gombak parliamentary seat and now wants to take a break from politics.


KUALA LUMPUR — Feb. 12, 2023: Former minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali is taking a break from politics to go back to the drawing board to decide what he does next.

It would mean taking a break from politics after failing to defend his Gombak parliamentary in last November’s general elections.

This is his tweet today: “To all Malaysians. It is a momentary pause in my career for public service that warrants going back to the drawing board.

“Nevertheless, there remains no let-up in my resolve to serve the nation and the rakyat.”

Azmin was in Keadilan before it became PKR and when in the government in 2020 led the Sheraton Move that brought down then Pakatan Harapan government.

Subsequently he was made a senior minister in the government led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, not surprising given that Muhyiddin benefitted from Azmin’s defetion.

After Muhyiddin lost his position, Azmin remained in a senior position under Muhyiddin’s successor Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Last November though Azmin had to face Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari in Gombak, where he lost to the latter by nearly 13,000 votes, the first time Azmin had lost an election since 2008.
