We can cancel maids MoU if you want, Jakarta tells Putrajaya
Indonesian ambassador Hermono said the One Channel System that was introduced under the MoU had continued to be bypassed.
PETALING JAYA: Indonesia is open to the cancellation of the agreement with Malaysia on the intake of maids, said Indonesian ambassador Hermono.
He said this was because Malaysia had failed to adhere to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Indonesian maids, which was signed just three months ago.
“It’s simple. The MoU should have been adhered to as both governments agreed to sign it. If one party breaches it, just cancel it,” Berita Harian quoted him as saying.
“If you don’t agree with the MoU, then terminate it.”
Hermono suggested that Putrajaya submit a letter to the Indonesian embassy to cancel the agreement. He said the letter would then be conveyed to his government.
On Tuesday, Indonesia imposed a temporary freeze on all Indonesian workers entering Malaysia.
Yesterday, Hermono said this was done because of the Malaysian immigration department’s continued use of the Maid Online System (MOS) to facilitate the recruitment of Indonesian maids.
He said it was “a total breach” of the MoU on the placement and protection of Indonesian maids which was signed on April 1.
Hermono said the One Channel System that was introduced under the MoU had continued to be bypassed. The MOS allows Indonesian workers to enter the country using a tourist visa before applying for a work permit, a practice which Jakarta wants to end due to the risk of forced labour.
Following Indonesia’s decision, home minister Hamzah Zainudin said Malaysia could recruit foreign workers from other countries.
He said Malaysia had 15 other source countries to choose from, adding that the ministry was serious about ensuring that migrant workers entered the country legally.
