PETALING JAYA: Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has submitted motions for the recent floods in Baling and the seizure of two Petronas subsidiaries to be discussed in the Dewan Rakyat.

He said he submitted the two motions to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun for the issues to be discussed at the next parliamentary sitting, which commences on Monday.

“It is hoped that the motions will be allowed as I believe they are matters of urgent public importance,” he said in a statement.

On July 4, flash floods hit Baling, Kedah, affecting 12 villages and claiming three lives.

Ramkarpal, who is also DAP national legal bureau chairman, had previously said a royal commission of inquiry to determine the cause of the floods would allay fears of a cover-up by state departments investigating the incident.

He said the public and, in particular, the people of Kedah had a right to know what caused the disaster.

However, energy and natural resources minister Takiyuddin Hassan said there was no need to set up a commission.

Meanwhile, it was reported yesterday that two Petronas subsidiaries in Azerbaijan had been seized by bailiffs after a French arbitration court ruled in March that Malaysia had to pay the descendants of the Sultan of Sulu at least RM62.59 billion in compensation.

Petronas described the seizure as “baseless” and said it was working to defend its legal position on the matter.

It also confirmed that the two subsidiaries, Petronas Azerbaijan (Shah Deniz) and Petronas South Caucasus, were served the notice of seizure on Monday.
