PKR leaders slam Rafizi’s call to only elect ‘big tent’ opposers into leadership council

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli says the party’s central leadership council should be made up of those who are against the ‘big tent’ approach.

PETALING JAYA: Several PKR division leaders have criticised Rafizi Ramli’s call to delegates at the coming party congress to vote in only certain candidates to the central leadership council, with one of them describing it as “insane”.

Yahya Mat Shari, the Tanjong Karang division chief, said as the incoming deputy president, Rafizi should be a leader for all, including those who were not aligned with him.

Yahya is among 70 members vying for positions in the council for the 2022-2025 term. The elections will be held this Saturday.

Saying the 70 hopefuls were genuine and eligible candidates, he added: “They are not Umno or PAS members and not his enemy. He doesn’t need to call on members to pick only certain candidates.”

In describing the former Pandan MP’s attempt to influence the delegates as “insane”, he said: “He can’t only have his faction in the council.”

On Tuesday, Rafizi said the party’s central leadership council should be made up of those who were against the “big tent” approach. He also identified 25 candidates whom he said were against the approach.

The term is used to describe PKR president Anwar Ibrahim’s preference for uniting all opposition parties against Barisan Nasional.

Klang assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri, who is also vying for a spot, said Rafizi should not abuse his powers as the deputy president.

“He should not be campaigning for certain candidates,” he said, adding that Rafizi should not attempt to have only those in his camp lead the party.

Meanwhile, Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong reminded delegates that candidates who were not part of Rafizi’s list were equally capable.

“Don’t feel threatened or pressured to vote for Rafizi’s people only.”

She also claimed that delegates were not surprised by Rafizi’s attempt to ensure that the lineup consisted of those in his camp.

“This is typical of him,” she said.

  1. Hahaha.. Rafizi has his strengths, but Diplomacy and building alliances with people who may not agree with him is not his strength.

PKR needs to learn how to manage internal differences without imploding or exploding.
