Amanah’s Salahuddin to table motion on seizure of Petronas subsidiaries

Amanah’s Salahuddin to table motion on seizure of Petronas subsidiaries

Pulai MP Salahuddin Ayub said the debate should not be held in the Special Chamber as it was ‘too big of an issue’ and required the input of many MPs.

PETALING JAYA: Amanah’s Salahuddin Ayub will table a motion at the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting to debate the seizure of two Petronas subsidiaries in Azerbaijan.

Speaking to FMT, the Pulai MP said it was a “very urgent matter”.

“It has to be debated immediately as this involves the interest of the country. The government must answer for this and the prime minister must be present as it is about our sovereignty.”

The lower house will sit next week.

However, Salahuddin, who is also the party’s deputy president, said the debate should not be held in the Special Chamber as it was “too big of an issue” and required the input of many MPs.

“The Special Chamber would see a very limited discussion.”

Introduced in 2016, the Special Chamber runs parallel with the Dewan Rakyat and allows issues of national importance or urgency to be discussed without interrupting the Dewan Rakyat’s normal proceedings. It is also televised to allow the media to report on proceedings.

Earlier today, it was reported that Petronas Azerbaijan (Shah Deniz) and Petronas South Caucasus were seized by bailiffs after a French arbitration court ruled in March that Malaysia had to pay the descendants of the Sultan of Sulu at least RM62.59 billion.

The Financial Times reported that the seizure was part of legal efforts launched in 2017 by the heirs to receive compensation for land in Sabah they said their ancestor leased to a British trading company in 1878.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers has since said it would “look into” the reported seizure, adding it had just been informed of the matter.

  1. I'm quite sure the Harapan Government of May 2018 -February 2020 is responsible for this disaster.
