Probe MACC? You’ll have to call in Pakatan appointees, says Najib

Najib Razak noted that Latheefa Koya was appointed head of the anti-graft agency on June 4, 2019 while Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was charged with receiving bribes from Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd on June 26 the same year.

PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak took a jab at Pakatan Harapan appointees in commenting on a call to investigate the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for not initiating a probe into several politicians mentioned in Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s corruption trial.

The Pekan MP noted that Latheefa Koya had been appointed head of the anti-graft agency on June 4, 2019, during Pakatan Harapan’s time in power, while Zahid had been charged with receiving bribes from Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd (UKSB) on June 26 the same year.

She should be charged under the National Security Act for disclosing to the public (via the court) the taped private conversation of a then-serving prime minister, and also explained how she was awarded those ribbons (medals) she wore on her uniform?

Najib also said Tommy Thomas was the attorney-general at the time.

“So if we want to probe why MACC did not carry out any investigation or charge anyone, who should be probed?” the former prime minister asked in a Facebook post.

Earlier today, the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) called on Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee to probe MACC for its inaction in investigating those who, apart from Zahid, had allegedly received kickbacks from UKSB.

C4 urged MACC to issue a public statement on its failure to launch investigations into other politicians allegedly linked to UKSB despite having access to the contents of a company ledger detailing the alleged payments.

David Tan, a key witness in Zahid’s corruption trial, had testified that apart from the former deputy prime minister, other leaders had also received funds from UKSB.

They include former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, former Sabah chief minister Shafie Apdal, former foreign minister Anifah Aman, housing and local government minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican, and health minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Muhyiddin, Anifah and Khairy have since denied receiving any funds from UKSB.
