Delay in decision on Zuraida shows PM’s weak position, says Nur Jazlan

Nur Jazlan Mohamed said there has not been a weaker Umno prime minister than Ismail Sabri Yaakob in the nation’s history.

PETALING JAYA: The delay in making a decision on Zuraida Kamaruddin’s Cabinet post is indicative of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s weak position, says Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

“It is just a mess and reflects his weak position,” Nur Jazlan said. “He is unable to make decisions or assert his authority because he is being held to ransom by certain quarters.

“The fact that he is dragging his feet shows that he could be buying time. It’s already been more than two weeks since she left Bersatu for Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) and she is still in the Cabinet. Never has an Umno prime minister been this weak in the nation’s history.”

Nur Jazlan was commenting on Ismail not saying whether the plantation industries and commodities minister would be dropped and replaced with another Bersatu MP or that he would continue to let her keep the position until the next general election (GE15).

He said it was obviously not a case of the minister being indispensable as there were so many other MPs capable of running the ministry.

Asked if he thought Ismail could be worried that the three PBM MPs might withdraw their support, which could affect the voting on bills at the next Parliament meeting, Nur Jazlan said anything was possible when the prime minister was in a weak position.

Yesterday, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin urged Ismail to quickly decide on Zuraida’s ministerial position as he already had a candidate to replace her. He said he was waiting to meet Ismail.

On Sunday, Zuraida said she hoped that Ismail would let her continue as she needed to complete many programmes that had been started.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Ismail should not be pressured by any party to replace Zuraida at this point of time because GE15 was approaching.

“It does not make any sense to change a minister, claiming it is a Bersatu quota, when the general election is around the corner. It is good for the prime minister and nation to let the status quo remain.

“The prime minister should not bow to any pressure because it’s his prerogative to replace or retain Zuraida,” he said.
