“Solve water woes in own backyard first,”
KEDAH menteri besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor should take a serious look at the water woes in his own state before talking big about the state supplying water to Penang but getting nothing in return.
Penang deputy chief minister Dr P. Ramasamy said this amid the raw water issues plaguing both states where Kedah is demanding a RM50 mil annual payment for the raw water Penang extracts from Sungai Muda.
“Kedah has grandiose plans but cannot resolve its own water woes. Maybe it is about time Sanusi takes a serious look at the water woes in his own state,” said the Perai assemblyperson.
“For some time, people in various parts of Kedah had been facing water shortage. In some areas in the state residents have stopped receiving water since 2019 and one area that is particularly affected is Bedong where more than 200 residents have been without water for more than three years.”
The state water authority – Syarikat Air Darul Aman or SADA – claimed that the water pipes in the area are old and are often subjected to leakages.
“Kampung Sungkap Para in Bedong is particularly affected by the lack of water supply. According to the residents interviewed by Seberang Perai city councillor David Marshell water supply to this area stopped in 2019,” Ramasamy pointed out.
“Apart from the occasional intermittent supply there is virtually no water for the 40 families in this place and complaints after complaints to SADA and other authorities have fallen on deaf ears.”
He explained that residents in the village had no choice but to take their daily baths at their workplaces while some families had stopped cooking for the lack of clean water by purchasing food from elsewhere.
Ramasamy went on to note that residents living a mere 200 metres away from Kampung Sungkap Para did not share similar water woes.
“Experiencing water cuts for a day or two is bad enough, let alone for three years.
“Something is really amiss with the Kedah water authority – either it is not managed well or they are under the thumb of PAS politicians who only want to satisfy their own sectarian political interests,” he remarked.
Despite not receiving adequate water supply for three years, Ramasamy claimed that the residents and families are still receiving their monthly water bills.
“How on earth can there be water bills when there is no supply of water in the first place?” he demanded.
He urged the relevant authorities to explain the conundrum, adding that the residents of Kampung Sungkap Para have had enough of the water problem.
“They have plans to demonstrate in front of the SADA office in Alor Setar in a matter of days if the water issue is not addressed immediately,” he said. – April 13, 2022
It is very perplexing that water supply seems a constant problem in parts of Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteFor Kelantanese, they will have to wait 30 to 40 years before their water problems can be resolved. Of course, the problem will be a continuous loop if there is no on-going maintenance of "repaired" pipes etc...
And of course we have the regular Selangor water disruption.
This is, to me, because Malaysians have become so used to such disruptions that they are inured to such a state of affairs.
Of course for Kelantanese, PAS will tell them "inshallah".
