PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will eventually give in to Umno’s demand for a general election (GE15) this year, a political analyst said.
Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid said this would likely happen after the expiry of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in July.
“It all depends on Ismail now. Whose interests does he want to prioritise? Supposedly national interests, which means prolonging the tenure of his Perikatan Nasional (PN) mates in the Cabinet, or Umno’s interests?” he told FMT.
Fauzi said Ismail would give in to Umno’s demands as his renomination as a candidate in GE15 depended on the party leadership.

Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid.
He was commenting on Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan’s call for GE15 to be called this year on the grounds that the opposition was divided and weakened after heavy losses in the Melaka, Sarawak and Johor elections. Other Umno leaders too are agitating for this.
Fauzi said Mohamad was clearly pushing Ismail to call for GE15 earlier to take advantage of the momentum generated by Barisan Nasional’s wins in Melaka and Johor.
“The longer GE15 is delayed, the more time there is for the opposition to recalibrate strategies and tactics to prevent an expected BN landslide win,” he said.

Oh Ei Sun.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said Ismail could continue to resist his party’s call for an early GE15 as long as he retained the support of PN and PH MPs.
“It would appear that PH is in favour of continuing their support for him until the expiry of the present term for the government,” he told FMT, adding that he did not believe prolonging GE15 would change the outcome.
“Perhaps it will only dent Umno’s expected sweeping victory a little bit, as most Malays have gone back to supporting Umno as a potent force to protect their interests come rain or shine.”
