Where’s BN-PN’s ‘Malay unity’ rhetoric for Melaka, mocks Puad
Ex-Umno leader calls out BN and PN's change in tone over their 'greed' for more seats in the Melaka state election
Former Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi questioned BN and PN’s sincerity in ‘uniting the ummah’, dismissing it as mere political rhetoric.
PETALING JAYA: A former Umno leader has mocked Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional over their “Malay-Muslim unity” rhetoric in recent state elections, with both coalitions now appearing to be in a deadlock over seat negotiations for the Melaka polls.
Former Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said it was clear that BN and PN’s tones have changed because of their “greed” for more seats in the Melaka state election.
He pointed out that PAS had said the model of cooperation in Melaka would not be the same as in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, while BN has stated its intention to defend all 21 seats the coalition won in the November 2021 state polls.
“Their narrative of ‘uniting the ummah’ just disappeared in the blink of an eye. It was always merely deceitful rhetoric.
“After winning two states, BN said their cooperation with PN is just an ‘understanding’ to allocate seats, not a new alliance.
“If it’s not an alliance then how are you going to unite the ummah? It’s sad, Malaysia’s ‘honest politics’ is becoming increasingly marred by the rhetoric of ‘uniting the ummah’,” the former Rengit assemblyman said in a Facebook post.
Having reached a pact for the Negeri Sembilan polls on Aug 1, BN and PN campaigned strongly on the need to unite Malays in order to defend their political power.
BN went on to win 18 seats while PN secured seven, giving their alliance a two-thirds majority in the state assembly.
While BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said their pact will continue in the Melaka polls, which is expected by the end of the year, he later said BN intends to defend all 21 seats it won in the last state polls.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang downplayed this, saying preliminary talks on the allocation of seats were still being held.
Separately, Wawasan president Hamzah Zainudin called for both coalitions to adopt a give-and-take approach in seat negotiations. Wawasan is a PN component.
