Summary

  • Lai said he’s leaving the matter to the authorities, claiming the clip was maliciously edited and deliberately spread to mislead.

  • Quoting an anonymous source, FMT reported that PKR may take disciplinary action against Lai over the video.

  • The video appears to show Lai discussing financial contributions to the division from a prominent businessman, allegedly describing them as “unaudited funds” linked to a senior political figure.

Wangsa Maju PKR chief Lai Chen Heng today condemned a video clip allegedly showing him discussing the division’s financial dealings.

He was reported by Free Malaysia Today as calling the clip a “character assassination” plot targeting him.

The video, which has circulated on several social media platforms, appears to show Lai discussing financial contributions to the division from a prominent businessperson, allegedly describing them as “unaudited funds” linked to a senior political figure.

Quoting a source, Free Malaysia Today reported that PKR may take disciplinary action against Lai over the video, and that any formal action would likely take place after the party’s national congress scheduled for May 24.

It was also reported that Lai’s deputy, Azmee Abd Rahim, is expected to be appointed acting chief.

Lai said he will leave the matter to the authorities, claiming the clip was maliciously edited and deliberately spread to mislead.

“I will leave it to the authorities to investigate, especially the individual who shared the video, which I believe was edited.

“I also believe it has been widely disseminated across many platforms in a coordinated manner, with the aim of character assassination,” Lai was quoted as saying.

Lai was previously reported as denying allegations of manipulation in the division’s 2024 financial statements, dismissing the claims as politically motivated.

He said the financial report presented at the division’s annual general meeting on March 1 had received no objections.

“This is happening during the party’s election season. It could be a coincidence, but I hope the media will refrain from speculating in a way that could disturb public order,” Lai said, adding that he had also received no official notice when asked if he was informed of any impending disciplinary action.

Temporary suspension

Free Malaysia Today previously reported PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh saying she would propose a temporary suspension of the Wangsa Maju division over procedural issues.

She also said the division was instructed to hold a special general meeting on March 1 to resubmit its 2024 financial statements, which had not received prior approval from the secretary-general’s office.

Following further consultations, a meeting was held on March 24 to clarify details in the report.
