Summary

  • MACC chief Azam Baki says the agency plans to suggest forfeiture of undeclared assets linked to the late Daim Zainuddin.

  • He says MACC received information from other countries’ authorities that the former minister allegedly had more assets kept overseas than what he declared to the agency.

MACC is pushing for any undeclared assets by the late Daim Zainuddin to be seized and surrendered to the government.

MACC chief Azam Baki said that they had received information about such assets being owned by Daim, his family, and associates.

“If it is true that such assets were not declared, that is an offence.

“(If true), even though Daim has passed away, we will suggest that the assets be forfeited to the government.

“It would then be up to prosecutors to decide on,” he said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.

According to Azam, the agency recently received new information from their counterparts abroad about alleged assets which Daim owned but did not include in his declaration to the authority.

Among the countries where Daim allegedly had assets were Switzerland and the UK, he added.

Finding ‘much more’

Azam said MACC has already frozen Daim’s assets worth around RM2 billion and believed they can find much more as investigators are still looking at wealth kept by the former finance minister, his family members and “proxies”.

Following this, the agency has opened eight new investigation papers to look into the information.

“I have given my officers two months to complete their probe into the eight cases,” Azam said.

Daim, who passed away on Nov 13 last year, came under the spotlight again after the graft buster launched investigations against him for suspected graft and money laundering.

The retired politician was charged with failing to abide by MACC’s notice to disclose his assets encompassing 38 firms, 25 pieces of land and property, seven luxury vehicles, and two investment fund accounts.

Following his death, Daim was acquitted of all the charges after the prosecution withdrew their case against him.

However, MACC is still continuing their probes into the financial trail of assets linked to Daim and his family.
