Has the Youth and Sports Minister erred in her latest statement?

By CS Ming

LAST week, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that Malaysia will host the 2027 SEA Games, with Penang, Sabah, and Sarawak designated as the venues for the various events. Yeoh explained that these three states were chosen because others were unwilling to share the hosting costs.

There may be some discrepancies between her announcement and the reality of the situation, as pointed out by a netizen in a recent post on X.

Hannah Yeoh caught lying with her skirts down! 🤦‍♂️ Hannah Yeoh says Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang’s willingness to co-host the event, contributing RM100 million, RM300 million, and RM15 million, respectively. BUT Sabah State Finance Minister Masidi Manjun denied of any discussion!

In reply to Hannah, State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said to the Daily Express Malaysia that he was unaware of Sabah’s supposed confirmation to host part of the games, or its financial commitment of approximately RM100 million.

Hannah has yet to make a statement regarding this. The cyberspace, however, has erupted with quite a number of netizens pointing out the government as an entity that could not be trusted.

Then there was a netizen who was dumbfounded by the amount that Sabah was supposed to pay.

To recap, Hannah stated that the estimated cost for the entire tournament in Malaysia is RM700 million, with Sarawak agreeing to cover 50% of the expense, Sabah offering RM100 million, and Penang contributing RM15 million.

However, now in a turn of events, Sabah’s commitment to co-hosting the SEA Games or covering any part of the costs is being questioned. – Sept 4, 2024
