DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng appeared to have accepted a proposal for his party’s Penang chapter to be led by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim while Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying will continue as the state secretary.

This was after Guan Eng hosted a gathering of “future Penang DAP leaders” which was attended by both Sim and Hui Ying.

“Stronger together in supporting the party leadership and unity government in Penang and Putrajaya to make a better life for the rakyat,” read a post on Guan Eng’s Facebook account about the gathering.

Photos from the event (above) showed Sim sitting next to Guan Eng while the latter’s sister, Hui Ying, sat next to Sim.

The Sim-Hui Ying formula was proposed by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke ahead of the Penang party election next weekend.

This was after the incumbent state chairperson and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced his decision not to contest in the state DAP polls.

Loke’s proposal appeared to be aimed at ensuring stability and making sure Chow could serve out his remaining term as chief minister without an internal challenge from DAP.

Over the past year, DAP assemblypersons have criticised Chow’s government over issues such as the economy and water supply.

In May this year, several DAP state assemblypersons, led by national chairperson Guan Eng, criticised a water tariff hike in Penang and urged Chow to follow Perak’s example by providing a 20 sen discount on water tariffs for a year.

Last month, Guan Eng questioned why Penang, despite being the state with the highest export rate and investment last year, had a lower economic growth rate than the national average.
