PETALING JAYA
Thirty-two DAP officials from the Penang chapter are set to battle it out for positions on the 2024/2027 committee in the Sept 22 state party elections.

The 15 successful candidates will choose the next Penang DAP chairman from among themselves.

Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was nominated, has announced that he will not defend his state chairman’s post. Party secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said Chow will, however, complete his term as chief minister.

Former chief minister Lim Guan Eng is also not contesting in the elections.

Among the notable nominees are Bukit Mertajam MP and human resources minister Steven Sim, Tanjong MP and deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh and exco members Zairil Khir Johari and Jagdeep Singh Deo.

It has been widely speculated that Hui Ying and Sim are prime contenders for the chairmanship, a position that could potentially lead to the chief minister’s role.

However, neither Sim nor Hui Ying are currently eligible to assume the role of chief minister, as they are not members of the state legislature.

The elections will be held during the Penang DAP convention at Setia SPICE Arena in Bayan Baru.

DAP central executive committee members Syahredzan Johan (Bangi MP) and Vivian Wong (Sandakan MP) are set to speak at the convention, with Loke officiating the event.

Last week, Chow announced that he will not be contesting despite receiving a nomination.

He said his decision is aligned with a succession plan discussed with Loke when he was appointed to his second term as chief minister.

The Batu Kawan MP also pointed out that he would still be a DAP vice-chairman despite bowing out of the state party leadership.
