'Assault case suspect indicated to be attached to police'

Police have indicated that Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim’s escort who allegedly assaulted a deaf e-hailing driver is “attached” to the force, said lawyer N Surendran.

“It’s an indication that has been given to us, you know, but confirmation of the identity and all that, I think we have to leave it to the police.

“They are conducting an investigation. I don’t want to say too much about that, but that’s the indication given,” said Surendran (above) who is representing 46-year-old alleged assault victim Ong Ing Keong.

Earlier today, Surendran alongside Lawyers For Liberty adviser Latheefa Koya, Ong, and an interpreter arrived at Bukit Aman around 10.45am.

He then addressed the media after they were questioned by the police for more than four hours.

The lawyer stressed that the police needed to get to the bottom of the case as they had not provided a satisfactory explanation since day one.

“So far, we haven’t had a satisfactory explanation yet.

“We hope this investigation will give or find the answers, and get to the bottom of exactly what happened so that Ong can get answers. It is also so that the public can get answers because this matter has become a public interest,” he said.

Prior to Surendran’s remarks, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the investigation papers on Ong’s case had been sent to the Attorney-General's Chambers yesterday.


12 individuals summoned

In a text message to the media, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said 12 individuals had been summoned in the investigation.

They included the alleged victim, the escort, hotel staff at the scene when the incident occurred, members of the Police Special Operations Unit, the Johor regent’s team of drivers, the complainant’s friend, a doctor, and a Grab operations director.

Tunku Ismail previously called for a thorough and impartial probe into the matter. He decreed that no illegal actions or threats should ever be allowed while claiming that there were attempts to drag the royal institution into the matter.

Razarudin urged the public against speculating or linking the case to the royal institution, adding that the escort member accused in the incident does not have any prior disciplinary record.

He also stated that all officers involved in handling the deaf driver’s assault reports would be summoned to provide statements, following concerns over inconsistencies in police accounts of when the reports were filed.
