PETALING JAYA: Singaporean comic Sharul Channa’s performance here has been cancelled following police reports on an old video of her work from 2018 in which she touched on a 3R (religion, royalty and race) issue.

Phoon Chi Ho, the CEO of organiser Laugh Labs Entertainment, said the communications ministry cancelled Sharul’s work visa despite all the necessary permits and approvals having been applied for and received a week before starting ticket sales.

“It is only in the last 24 hours that these reports from some members of the public came in, referencing old content that has been on Comedy Central Asia and online for a few years now.

“We did our best to put in an appeal but, unfortunately, we’ve been informed that Sharul will not be able to perform this weekend,” Phoon said in a statement shared in a post by Sharul on Instagram.

Sharul was scheduled to perform at the Just Joking stand-up comedy show at the PJ Live Arts Centre tonight with local comedians such as Rizal van Geyzel and Mad Sabah.

She said in the Instagram post that the cancellation came despite her assurance that her set does not touch on religion, race or royalty.

“It is a very disappointing matter for me as it must be for you who bought the tickets,” she said in the video.

The 2018 video in question, a snippet from Comedy Central: Stand Up Asia 2, showed Sharul talking about the Malaysian authorities sending “content police” to ensure her material did not touch on alcohol or dogs.

She also joked that she was “halal-certified” as she did not say anything offensive.

Phoon said audience members may still catch the show which will go on tonight, or opt for a full refund, which will take two weeks or less to be processed.

“We at Laugh Labs Entertainment would like to convey our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused as we are doing the best we can to ameliorate this unfortunate situation while continuing to elevate the status of our comedy scene,” he said.
