US sanctions: M'sia does not recognise unilateral decision, says PM

PARLIAMENT | Malaysia will not recognise the US unilateral decision to impose sanctions against foreign entities that support Hamas and the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, said Anwar Ibrahim.

The prime minister told the Dewan Rakyat this morning that such US intimidation would not impact Malaysia's stand on the Palestine issue, including its relationship with Hamas.

"The government does not recognise any decision by any country, including the US, to impose restriction or sanction unilaterally.

"We only recognise decisions by the United Nations in a multilateral manner.

"First of all, we do not agree how the US is doing this. And second, it (the US decision) will not influence our policy and decisions," Anwar said during the Prime Minister's Question Time.

He also stressed that Malaysia is guided by its principle that Hamas has a legitimate right to the Palestinian struggle, which he likened to South Africa's African National Congress' fight for freedom under Nelson Mandela.

Malaysia, though not party to the Rome Statute, will offer support if there are attempts to refer Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over war crimes in Gaza, he added.

  1. It does not matter whether Malaysia recognises US sanctions.
US laws have full authority on US soil, and they can have far reaching consequences on all corners of the globe.

Iranian companies , for example, are forced to conduct international trade through dubious fly-by-night middlemen, at high cost and risk of fraud because most reputable international companies will not touch Iran trade, even if they are European or Asian based, to avoid risking their US and US Dollar business.

  2. Then, mfer, how does Iran survive for so long since the beginning of US sanctions?

  3. Iran survives US sanctions... With a great deal of cost, inconvenience and difficulty.
Iran GDP per person is less than 2/5 that of Malaysia, and has seen it's economy stagnant for more than 10 years.

Malaysia has made loud statements that it does not recognise US sanctions against Russia... but did you know that Bank Negara has quietly worked to ensure Malaysia's commercial banks and their customers do not expose themselves to the risk of becoming sanctioned and getting locked out of the US financial system ?
