PETALING JAYA: A PKR MP has claimed that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s privatisation policies caused “millions of Malays” to be impoverished under his leadership.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim said Mahathir must shoulder part of the blame for the economic plight of the Malays and their ongoing struggles.

“Mahathir’s privatisation policies, which prioritised crony capitalists, are the main cause of millions of Malay Bumiputeras becoming poor citizens in cities and rural areas throughout the country, especially in Malay and Bumiputera-majority states such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, Sabah and Sarawak,” he said in a statement.

Hassan said while Mahathir’s “Malay Proclamation” initiative demonstrated his dedication to the Malay community, it did not absolve the former prime minister from blame over the community’s economic struggles.

He said if Article 153 of the Federal Constitution, which touches on the special privileges of the Malays and Bumiputeras, had been implemented decades ago through a class-based approach prioritising the welfare of poor, lower-class Malays, the community would have “long been freed from poverty and economic decline”.

Instead, he said, Mahathir’s administration oversaw extensive privatisation of the economic sector, with many government-owned companies like Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Telekom Malaysia Bhd being privatised.

Hassan had previously accused Mahathir of returning to his old ways by using racial issues to criticise Anwar Ibrahim’s government, and questioned Mahathir’s contributions to ordinary Malay folk while he was the prime minister for 22 years under Barisan Nasional.

Mahathir had claimed that the government, while led by a Malay, was silencing the Malays. He labelled the government as a dictatorship following the cancellation of a “Malay Proclamation” event featuring him which was scheduled to be held in March.

FMT has contacted Mahathir for his comments.

  1. "Hassan said while Mahathir’s “Malay Proclamation” initiative demonstrated his dedication to the Malay community, it did not absolve the former prime minister from blame over the community’s economic struggles."

Comment: Hassan should not be naive or stupid to think that the old fool is dedicated to the malay community with his malay proclamation.

It is simply his (old fool) last attempt to remain relevant and have his voice heard. It is his last effort to try and dislodge the Unity government of Anwar so that Anwar will cease to be PM.

The old fool was/is motivated by his deep hatred of Anwar and cannot abide by Anwar being the PM.

Don't forget, the old baboon grandly proclaimed before GE15 that he was willing to serve as PM a third time if the people asked.

As with the Everly Brothers' "All I Have To Do Is Dream", the old fool was indulging in his fantasies.

And the result? ALL Pejuang candidates including he and boy-boy Mukhriz lost in GE 15 and also EVERYONE lost his/her deposit INCLUDING father and son.
