Explain decision not to extend MoU, says Muhyiddin

Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s remarks today were different from last week.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has called on Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to explain the decision not to extend the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between his government and Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Muhyiddin said Ismail’s comments contradicted remarks made at a meeting between the prime minister and the PN leadership last week.

“At the meeting last week, we discussed whether to extend it (MoU) or not. The prime minister said as there had yet to be further negotiations (with PH), a decision cannot be made.

“However, the comments today are different. We want an explanation on whether to extend it or not,” he told reporters when visiting Kuala Lumpur International Airport today.

Ismail had said earlier today that his government would follow the stance of the Umno Supreme Council on the MoU, and would not extend it beyond July 31.

However, Ismail did not dismiss the possibility that some changes could happen before the end of July.

Ismail’s government has the support of Barisan Nasional (41), PN (42), GPS (18), and GRS (9), PBM (2) and four independent MPs, leaving it six short of an outright majority.

PH commands 90 seats among the 104 opposition and other MPs and has pledged not to cause the fall of Ismail’s government through a confidence motion until July 31.
