KUALA LUMPUR – Members from the Global Human Rights Foundation (GHRF) have filed police reports against Islamic preacher Idris Sulaiman for allegedly insulting the Hindu religion.

Subsequently, Idris uploaded a sermon on Facebook page Ilmu Salaf Dot Com telling Muslims it is prohibited to clean other houses of worship, even during flood relief efforts.

Idris likened the act of cleaning other houses of worship to cleaning gambling dens and discotheques, adding that temples are houses of the devil.

GHRF president S. Shashi Kumar while addressing the press outside the Sentul Police District headquarters said that the floods which hit the country on December 18 displayed Malaysian unity as individuals regardless of race mobilised to provide aid to victims. However, preachers such as Idris are trying to disrupt the harmony between religious groups.

So far, Shashi said over 100 police reports across Malaysia were filed against the preacher.

“In Malaysia right now, minority religions are deliberately attacked.

“They say that vernacular schools are destroying unity, but where are those same people?

“They must condemn this preacher, if not they are hypocrites,” Shashi said.

This, Shashi said, is not the first time GHRF has made police reports against preachers who insulted Hinduism, one of which was Syakir Nasoha – who said non-Muslims would end up killing and destroying the Muslim community.

However, Shashi said that no action was taken against Syakir and he expects the same indifference by authorities towards their report against Idris.

He mentioned that GHRF has made attempts to obtain updates on their previous reports but received no response from the police or Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“We made police reports today and presented evidence and for sure I know nothing will come of it.

“Next, we are going to go to the Islamic Development Malaysia Department with a memorandum to get their response regarding Idris and Syakir,” Shashi added.
