JIUQUAN, Oct 30 — Three Chinese astronauts including the country’s only woman spaceflight engineer blasted off on a “dream” mission to the Tiangong space station in the early hours of Wednesday.

The new Tiangong team will carry out experiments with an eye to the space programme’s ambitious goal of placing astronauts on the Moon by 2030 and eventually constructing a lunar base.

The Shenzhou-19 mission took off with its trio of space explorers at 4.27am from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China, state news agency Xinhua and state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Among the crew is Wang Haoze, 34, who is China’s only female spaceflight engineer, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). She is the third Chinese woman to take part in a crewed mission.

The space agency deemed the launch a “complete success”, Xinhua said.

“Like everyone else, I dream of going to the space station to have a look,” Wang told a media gathering Tuesday alongside her fellow crew members, lined up behind podiums and tall panes of glass to seal them off from the public.

“I want to meticulously complete each task and protect our home in space,” she said.

“I also want to travel in deep space and wave at the stars.”

Headed by Cai Xuzhe, the team will return to Earth in late April or early May next year, CMSA Deputy Director Lin Xiqiang said at a separate press event confirming the launch.

Cai, a 48-year-old former air force pilot, brings experience from a previous stint aboard Tiangong as part of the Shenzhou-14 mission in 2022.

“Having been selected for the new crew, taking on a new role, facing new tasks and new challenges, I feel the honour of my mission with a great responsibility,” said Cai.

The aerospace veteran added that the crew was now “fully prepared mentally, technically, physically and psychologically” for the mission ahead.

Completing the astronaut lineup is 34-year-old man Song Lingdong.

The crew currently aboard the Tiangong space station is scheduled to return to Earth on November 4 after completing handover procedures with the incoming astronauts, Lin said.

‘Space dream’

China has ramped up plans to achieve its “space dream” under President Xi Jinping.

Its space programme was the third to put humans in orbit and has also landed robotic rovers on Mars and the Moon.

Crewed by teams of three astronauts that are rotated every six months, the Tiangong space station is the programme’s crown jewel.

Beijing says it is on track to send a crewed mission to the Moon by 2030, where it intends to construct a base on the lunar surface.

The Shenzhou-19 crew’s time aboard Tiangong will see them carry out various experiments, including some involving “bricks” made from components imitating lunar soil, CCTV reported.

These items — to be delivered to Tiangong by the Tianzhou-8 cargo ship in November — will be tested to see how they fare in extreme radiation, gravity, temperature and other conditions.

Due to the high cost of transporting materials into space, Chinese scientists hope to be able to use lunar soil for the construction of the future base, CCTV reported.

The Shenzhou-19 mission is primarily about “accumulating additional experience”, Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in the United States, told AFP.

While this particular swap of astronaut crews and upcoming six-month stint aboard Tiangong may not witness major breakthroughs or feats, it is still “very valuable to do”, said McDowell.

China has in recent decades injected billions of dollars into developing an advanced space programme on par with the United States and Europe.

In 2019, China successfully landed its Chang’e-4 probe on the far side of the moon — the first spacecraft ever to do so. In 2021, it landed a small robot on Mars.

Harris distances herself from Biden’s ‘garbage’ comment as Democrats are privately exasperated by the president

WashingtonCNN —

Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday distanced herself from President Joe Biden’s comments that seemingly referred to Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage,” setting off a political firestorm a week before Election Day.

Harris told reporters that she “strongly” disagrees with criticizing people based on who they vote for. Asked if she has spoken to the president about his comments, Harris said that Biden called her Tuesday evening but that the president’s comments “didn’t come up.”

“Listen, I think, first of all, he clarified his comments, but let me be clear: I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for. You heard my speech last night and continuously throughout my career. I believe that the work that I do is about representing all the people whether they support me or not,” Harris said on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews.

The vice president also repeated what she has said on the trail, including that she will “represent all Americans” if elected.

“I am sincere in what I mean: When elected president of the United States, I will represent all Americans, including those who don’t vote for me, and address their needs and their desires,” Harris said.

The president inadvertently injected himself into the home stretch of the campaign on Tuesday night when he was attempting to criticize Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden over the weekend. Biden mentioned Puerto Rico, which was referred to as a “floating island of garbage” by a comedian at Trump’s event on Sunday night.

“And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico ‘a floating island of garbage.’ Well, let me tell you something … I don’t know the Puerto Rican that I know… or Puerto Rico where I’m – in my home state of Delaware – they’re good, decent, honorable people,” Biden said during virtual remarks in a Voto Latino get-out-the-vote call meant to help Harris.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said, pausing for a moment before continuing. “His, his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and it’s un-American.”

Biden had attempted to explain away his comments on Tuesday night.

“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” Biden posted on X later that evening. “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”

When CNN asked for an explanation on the president’s comments, a White House spokesperson insisted that Biden had meant “supporter’s” rather than “supporters,” arguing that he had actually said this: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s – his – his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.”

“The President referred to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as garbage,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said.

Harris’ campaign was quick to try to publicly defend or explain those remarks publicly. But in private, both inside and around the campaign, plenty of Democrats were quietly buzzing with frustration and concern about the president’s remarks.

Senior campaign officials were fielding messages of exasperation from supporters – some of whom suggested that perhaps the president should find a way to disappear from public view altogether in the final six days leading up to Election Day, sources said.

“The Biden gaffe yesterday is just so infuriating,” one former administration official said. “Nobody wants him out there.”

Biden’s remarks have undeniably become an unwelcome distraction. Trump and his allies quickly seized on them to accuse Harris and her campaign, by extension, of looking down on Americans who back the former president.

Democrats are forcefully making the point that Biden is not the presidential nominee, and Harris has been abundantly clear that she has respect for all voters – regardless of whether they support her. They also have lashed out at what they see as a double standard, given Trump’s long history of racist, misogynistic and offensive remarks.

“We won’t lose a single voter because of it,” said one adviser to the campaign, dismissing the significance of Biden’s comments.

As CNN has reported, there had been growing wariness among Harris campaign aides about Biden’s propensity for gaffes, at a moment when the campaign does not want to take any unnecessary political risks. Tuesday night’s “garbage” comments from Biden only ended up confirming those existing concerns for many Democrats.

Earlier on Wednesday, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ vice-presidential running mate, said in an interview with CBS News that Biden’s comments a response to the “frustration with Donald Trump’s rhetoric of division,” and rejected the argument that they undercut a central message of the Harris campaign to unify the country.

“I think there’s– the frustration we’ve seen since January 6, the frustration with Donald Trump’s rhetoric of division, it does fire passions, and I think … President Biden was very clear that he’s speaking about the rhetoric we heard at that. So, it doesn’t undermine it,” Walz said.

In an interview with ABC News, Walz said that Harris’ remarks in Washington, DC, on Tuesday should be the message voters focus on, noting that Harris is the candidate at the top of the Democratic ticket, not Biden.

“The president’s clarified his remarks, but let’s be very clear. The vice president and I have made it absolutely clear that we want everyone as a part of this. Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric is what needs to end. He called this a garbage country, and continues on from ‘the enemy within,’” he said. “What you heard Vice President Harris say, and what I say is, there’s a place for all of us here, and I think that’s the one– she’s running for president, she’s making the message, and she delivered that speech on the Ellipse that showed what we can be as a country.”

Canada alleges Indian minister Amit Shah behind plot to target Sikh separatists

WASHINGTON/NEW DELHI, Oct 29 (Reuters) - The Canadian government alleged on Tuesday that Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was behind the plots to target Sikh separatists on Canadian soil.

The Indian government did not immediately respond but has dismissed Canada's prior accusations as baseless, denying any involvement.

The Washington Post newspaper first reported that Canadian officials alleged Shah, considered the number two in the Modi government, was behind a campaign of violence and intimidation targeting Sikh separatists in Canada.

Canadian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison said to a parliamentary panel on Tuesday that he told the U.S.-based newspaper that Shah was behind the plots.

"The journalist called me and asked if it (Shah) was that person. I confirmed it was that person," Morrison told the committee, without providing further details or evidence. The High Commission of India in Ottawa and the Indian foreign ministry had no immediate comment.

The Indian home ministry directed queries to the foreign ministry.

Canada told India about Shah's alleged role in the plots around October 2023, one Indian government source told Reuters in New Delhi on Wednesday.
But New Delhi thinks the information is very weak, flimsy and does not expect it to cause any trouble for Shah or the government, the source and another government source said.

Both spoke on condition of anonymity as they are not authorised to speak to the media.

India has called Sikh separatists "terrorists" and threats to its security. Sikh separatists demand an independent homeland known as Khalistan to be carved out of India. An insurgency in India during the 1980s and 1990s killed tens of thousands.

That period included the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that left thousands dead following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards after she ordered security forces to storm the holiest Sikh temple to flush out Sikh separatists.

Canada in mid-October expelled Indian diplomats, linking them to the 2023 murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. India also ordered the expulsion of Canadian diplomats.

The Canadian case is not the only instance of India's alleged targeting of Sikh separatists on foreign soil.
Washington has charged a former Indian intelligence officer, Vikash Yadav, for allegedly directing a foiled plot to murder Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen and Indian critic in New York City.

The FBI warned against such a retaliation aimed at a U.S. resident. India has said little publicly since announcing in November 2023 it would formally investigate the U.S. allegations.

The accusations have tested Washington and Ottawa's relations with India, often viewed by the West as a counterbalance to China.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said it was disappointing that American political commentator Tucker Carlson resorted to using nationality and gender to attack Kamala Harris and, in doing so, had implicated Malaysia.

PETALING JAYA:
DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok has blasted American political commentator Tucker Carlson for belittling Malaysia in his attacks on US presidential candidate Kamala Harris, adding that he should retract his remarks and apologise.

The Seputeh MP said that Carlson had disparaged Malaysia and “unjustly dragged the country” into the two-party rivalry in the US.

“It is disappointing that Carlson resorted to using nationality and gender to attack Harris and, in doing so, had implicated Malaysia in his remarks.

“He needs to retract his remarks and apologise to Malaysians,” she said in a statement.

Carlson reportedly mocked Harris at a Republican rally in Madison Square Garden, New York, by labelling her as “Samoan-Malaysian” and a “low-IQ former California prosecutor”.

Harris, the current US vice-president, is the daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother.

Kok said that the discourse should be on the candidates’ abilities, policies, and vision, rather than their family background or place of birth, “especially since Harris is not originally from Malaysia”.

She also called upon PAS leaders, who are “preoccupied” with the issue of the Chinese flag being waved at several parades locally, to redirect their attention to the matter of Malaysia’s reputation being tarnished during the US political campaign.

Earlier today, foreign minister Mohamad Hasan invited Harris to “balik kampung” to Malaysia if elected the next US president, in a tongue-in-cheek response to Carlson’s attack.

In a Facebook post responding to Carlson’s claim that Harris was part-Malaysian, Mohamad thanked the former Fox News host for bringing this to his attention.

“We were not aware that a Malaysian was running for the office of US president.

“Should Puan Kamala win the race, we are delighted to invite her to ‘balik kampung’ and try some ‘nasi goreng USA’,” he said, referring to the fried rice dish that has no actual links to the US.

Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook should have taken a different stance when commenting on the recent apology by former prime minister Najib Razak over the 1MDB fiasco.

PETALING JAYA:
Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has cricitised DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook for his blunt dismissal of former prime minister Najib Razak’s apology over the 1MDB scandal.

Speaking in the latest episode of his Keluar Sekejap podcast, Khairy said he wanted to introduce a new term known as “cultural quotient” (CQ), which he said referred to the ability to understand social and cultural sensitivities.

“When someone is in jail and apologises, but you say ‘You’re a criminal and this is irrelevant’… I cannot think of a worse CQ moment than this,” said Khairy.

“To say that an apology is ‘irrelevant’… That’s harsh. This man (Najib) is in prison and has shown remorse.

“I disagree with Najib on many things, but he is trying to apologise.”

Last week, Najib made an “unreserved” apology to Malaysians over the 1MDB fiasco, which had led to his incarceration in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

The former Umno president said he had reflected on the scandal over the past 26 months, and it pained him that it had occurred when he was the prime minister and finance minister.

Malaysian and US authorities alleged that about US$4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB, a state fund co-founded by Najib. He had been slapped with a total of 42 charges in several trials linked to 1MDB.

Najib is currently serving a reduced six-year sentence following a pardon after he was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million in funds belonging to former 1MDB subsidiary SRC.

When asked to comment on Najib’s apology on Monday, Loke said it was “irrelevant” as “a crime is a crime.”

The transport minister said it was a fact that Najib’s conviction in the SRC case was upheld by the Federal Court, adding that the former prime minister’s apology meant nothing to him.

Earlier today, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered Najib to enter his defence on 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering involving 1MDB funds.

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Najib.

Najib is standing trial on four counts of abuse of power and 21 charges of money laundering involving RM2.28 billion in 1MDB funds deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.
