High Court halts Sky City project in Genting Highlands

The court says the project breached hill development rules and orders six defendants to pay RM2 million in costs to Genting Malaysia Group

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled that the proposed Genting Sky City project violated hill development guidelines and the National Physical Plan.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here has ruled in favour of Genting Malaysia Group in its suit against the proposed Genting Sky City development, saying it contravened development guidelines and the National Physical Plan.

In delivering her judgement, Justice Aliza Sulaiman ruled that excavation works at the site posed a serious threat to the stability of a slope.

“There was no extant, valid and subsisting planning permission for the proposed project in whatsoever configuration of blocks,” she said.

Aliza also ruled that excavation works were carried out without valid earthworks approval or approved building plans.

“The project contravenes the guidelines on development planning in hills and highland and the National Physical Plan,” she said.

She also ruled that the main road in Genting Highlands is a private road and granted an injunction stopping further excavation works.

The suit was filed in 2020 by Genting Highlands Bhd, Genting Malaysia Bhd and First World Hotels & Resorts Sdn Bhd against developer GM Aero Support Sdn Bhd, contractor Sycal Bhd, consultant engineer Lau Yee Sum, structural engineering firm Perunding Rekacekap Sdn Bhd, architect Lee Yong Chiew and town planner Zahiruddin Zainal.

Sycal is a subsidiary of Main Market-listed Sycal Ventures Bhd.

The court also dismissed a counterclaim filed by the six defendants and ordered them to pay RM2 million in costs after a 76-day trial that began in 2022.

The plaintiffs in the suit had claimed that the project was located on steep hill slopes, which could destabilise land in the surrounding area and result in damage to the existing developments in its proximity.

The group said the Genting Sky City project violates the Guidelines on Development Planning in Hills and Highlands, as a substantial part of the landscape is a steep hillside with slopes at a gradient ranging from 25° to 35° or more, where development is prohibited.

It said the development proposed to be built on class 3 and class 4 slopes near First World Hotels & Resorts raised the risk of landslides, structural damage and possible building collapse.

The plaintiffs also said excavation, piling and slope-cutting works had already begun around November 2019 despite the lack of valid approvals from the Bentong Municipal Council under the Town and Country Planning Act 1976 and the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.

Lawyers Teh Eng Lay, Andy Gan, Lucas Chong, and Bryan Yau appeared for the plaintiffs, while counsel B Thangaraj, Wong Li Wei and Tan Jia Shen acted for the defendants.

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten Malaysians with the Global Sumud Flotilla who were detained in international waters near the Greek island of Crete on Thursday have been released and are expected to be flown to Turkey.

The director-general of the Sumud Nusantara command centre, Sani Araby Abdul Alim Araby, said the 10 were among 175 humanitarian activists from the flotilla who were transported to Heraklion airport in buses provided by the Greek authorities.

Sani said the 10 released Malaysian activists have accepted a Turkish government offer of seats on a 160-seat aircraft which will repatriate 20 Turkish citizens.

“The flight is expected to arrive at Istanbul international airport at 11.45pm Malaysian time,” he said at a press conference here tonight.

Sani Araby said the centre had received reports that the activists faced provocation and physical attacks during their detention in uncomfortable conditions, leading to violent incidents that resulted in injuries to several participants.

Two members of the flotilla’s main steering committee, Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Avila, remained in Israeli custody, believed to be an attempt to threaten and cripple the mission.

Sani Araby said the centre has been in contact with the foreign ministry to coordinate travel arrangements for the Malaysian activists. “Three of our representatives are already in Istanbul for management and assessment,” he said.

The decision on whether the activists will continue their mission or return home depends on their health status and the current consensus between the centre and the flotilla, he said.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international maritime coalition and global movement committed to breaking the blockade on Gaza.

The head of a Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem has condemned a brutal attack on a nun in the city earlier in the week and warned of growing concerns over the future for Christians living in the Holy Land.

Archbishop Atallah Hanna said on Facebook that “the attack on a nun in the city of Jerusalem comes amid escalating violations against Christian institutions in the city”.

He added that “this reflects increasing concerns about the future of the historic Christian presence in the Holy Land”.

In his post, which was accompanied by a video, he warned that such attacks “are no longer isolated incidents, but part of a recurring pattern that threatens the Christian presence,” calling for international action to stop them.

On Thursday, Israeli police released a video showing what witnesses said was an attack by a Jewish man on a French nun in Jerusalem on Tuesday.

Video footage showed the man following the nun, forcibly pushing her to the ground, causing an injury to her head, then briefly walking away before returning to kick her as she lay on the ground, before bystanders intervened.

According to The Times of Israel, police said they had arrested a Jewish man suspected of assaulting the nun in Jerusalem.

“The suspect, a 36-year-old male, was identified and subsequently arrested by police,” the police said in a statement on Wednesday, adding it viewed with “utmost severity” any violent act “driven by potentially racist motives and directed toward members of the clergy”.

Father Olivier Poquillon, director of Jerusalem’s French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research, told the AFP news agency the 48-year-old nun is a researcher at the institution and did not wish to speak publicly.

Rising attacks on Christians

Attacks on Christian communities in occupied East Jerusalem and Israel have risen in recent years, according to the Rossing Center for Education and Dialogue, which tracks such incidents.

Churches in Jerusalem have repeatedly called on Israeli authorities to act decisively to put a stop to them.

On Tuesday, Israel’s Foreign Ministry called the incident a “shameful act” in a statement on X.

“In a city sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, we remain committed to protecting all communities and ensuring those responsible for violence are held accountable,” the ministry added.

Last month, a viral photograph showing an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon with a sledgehammer caused outrage.

The military said an investigation had been opened and that “appropriate measures will be taken against those involved in accordance with the findings”.

Israel later said the soldier had been jailed for 30 days, along with another soldier who had been filming him. Six other soldiers have been summoned for questioning.

The post “If it’s against your beliefs, don’t attend” – Tourism Minister Rebukes Critics of KL Rain Rave Water Festival appeared first on WORLD OF BUZZ.

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Tiong King Sing, has called on all parties not to politicise the Rain Rave Water Music Festival, which runs from 30 April to 2 May.

Speaking at a press conference after officiating the Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026 in the capital, Tiong stressed that events aimed at boosting tourism and the economy should not be subject to political maneuvering.

“How will the economy develop if everything is politicised?”

He added that the festival provides significant opportunities for local vendors, particularly food sellers, to increase their income. He encouraged the public to engage directly with traders to better understand the economic benefits of such events.

Tiong explained that the festival was organised in conjunction with the Labour Day public holiday, allowing workers to relax and unwind after their daily routines.

“It’s not Songkran, just water-concept”

Addressing comparisons to regional traditions, he dismissed claims that the event resembles Thailand’s Songkran celebration, clarifying that Rain Rave is simply a music festival with a water-based concept.

“Our programme is not Songkran. It’s just a music festival with water elements. People may see water and assume it’s Songkran,” he said.

Religious sensitivity and public safety

The MOTAC Minister welcomed anyone interested in attending the festival while emphasising the importance of respecting Malaysia’s religious diversity.

“Those who feel comfortable attending are welcome. If your beliefs do not permit it, then you should not attend,” he added, as reported by Harian Metro.

He also assured the public that stringent safety measures are in place, with police present at the venue to maintain order. The government, he stated, will not compromise on illegal activities, including drug abuse or alcohol-related offences.

Tiong confirmed that he has instructed enforcement authorities to carry out their duties strictly; if anyone is found using drugs or engaging in unlawful acts, immediate action will be taken.

Tiong reiterated that the event is organised for the general public and that the safety of both tourists and local attendees remains a top priority.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 — All programmes, including entertainment events, must be organised with due regard for values, decorum, religious sensitivities and local societal norms, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the views expressed by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) and the Federal Territories Mufti Department should be taken seriously and respected, as they reflect the concerns of a broad segment of Malaysian society.

“That is why we have called for such programmes to be reassessed in terms of their concept, content and implementation,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said guidelines should be reviewed and strengthened to ensure all events remain in line with the nation’s cultural values, religious principles and identity.

“Our principle is clear: entertainment is not wrong, but it must have limits. Progress can continue, but values must not be compromised.

“Organisers should engage with the relevant authorities to ensure social harmony is preserved. This is Umno’s position,” he said.

Yesterday, JAWI reportedly objected to the Air Rain Rave Music Festival 2026, which is being held in Bukit Bintang from yesterday until tomorrow, citing concerns that it could undermine moral standards and societal values.

JAWI director Hanifuddin Roslan was reported as saying that organisers should review the programme’s concept, taking into account the sensitivities of Malaysia’s multiracial, multireligious and multicultural society.

Meanwhile, the Federal Territories Mufti Department also reportedly stressed that the festival should be evaluated holistically from the perspectives of Islam, ethics and public interest. — Bernama

Just hold the Air Rain Rave Music Festivals from now on in Penang island where the Penangites are very broadminded (and hopefully Firdaus Wong or/and Riduan Tee don't come visit us). In fact, I propose Penang Island holds the festival TWICE a year, once for the Island herself and then again for KL, wakakaka.

PAS’ 16-seat gamble in Melaka signals growing distance from Bersatu

PAS’ 16-seat gamble in Melaka signals growing distance from Bersatu

WHILE THE significance of PAS’ targeted 16 seats in the Melaka state election might elude most Malaysians, a subtle shift is happening in the background.

This news comes at the backdrop of former opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin who is expected to announce his “new party” next month.

He claims to already have membership numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

According to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s political analyst Mazlan Ali, this signals that the Islamic party is putting more weight on Hamzah’s camp, at the expense of Bersatu.

He pointed out that PAS doubled the number of seats it contested in the 2021 Melaka polls, from eight to 16. Note that in the 2021 Melaka polls, PAS contested eight seats under the PN banner, while Bersatu vied for 15, and Gerakan five.

Mazlan said ties between PAS and Bersatu have grown increasingly strained, citing the prolonged impasse over the PN’s chairmanship and continuing disputes over the opposition leader’s post.

Earlier, Hamzah also reminded that the position of opposition leader does not belong exclusively to any individual, but is instead determined by the strength of support among opposition Members of Parliament.

“Within today’s opposition bloc, there are three main groups: PAS, Bersatu and the Independents,” he said.

“It is the Members of Parliament from these three blocs who will decide who the next opposition leader will be before Parliament reconvenes,” he continued. —May 1, 2026

Repeat abuse case sparks call for stronger domestic violence protections

Repeat abuse case sparks call for stronger domestic violence protections

By Bernie Yeo

WANITA MCA has condemned a violent domestic abuse case in Sungai Petani, where a man allegedly assaulted his wife so severely that she suffered a miscarriage, calling for stronger safeguards against repeat offenders.

Its secretary-general Chan Quin Er said the case must be treated with the utmost seriousness, warning that it highlights systemic gaps in protecting victims of domestic violence.

“This is not a ‘family matter’. It is a serious crime that can and does cost lives,” she said.

According to reports, the suspect has a history of domestic violence and a prior criminal record involving abuse against previous partners. He is said to have been married nine times, with 11 children, and allegedly targets women with stable incomes, particularly civil servants.

Chan said the case reflects failures in existing protection systems, which have allowed repeat offenders to continue targeting new victims.

The suspect was previously charged in 2021 for assaulting a then-pregnant wife, causing severe injuries, including a brain haemorrhage that required surgery, as well as fractures to her jaw, spine and ribs.

Chan called for the government to introduce a domestic violence offender registry and early warning system, linking data across enforcement and relevant agencies to prevent repeat offences.

She further urged stricter penalties for repeat offenders, including custodial sentences without delay, as well as faster processing of protection orders to ensure victims receive immediate safeguards.

“Too many victims are left exposed due to slow and complex procedures. Protection must be put in place as soon as a report is made,” she stated.

She also called for expanded support services, including shelters, legal aid, counselling, financial assistance and responsive emergency helplines.

She encouraged victims to seek help through its Legal Advisory and Women’s Aid Centre (LAWA), which provides legal assistance and counselling for abused women.

Chan also urged the public to stop blaming victims, noting that many face fear, emotional pressure and psychological manipulation that make it difficult to leave abusive relationships.

“What they need is support to rebuild their lives, not judgement,” she said, adding that Malaysia must strengthen its systems to protect victims before tragedies occur, not only after.

Calling for a full investigation into the case and for the perpetrator to face the full force of the law, Chan said, “The safety of women must always come first.” ‒ May 1, 2026

New Falklands Push? F-18 Super Hornets Roar as President Javier Milei Attends Joint U.S.-Argentina Drills on USS Nimitz

By EurAsian Times Desk

Argentina’s President Javier Milei attended joint US-Argentine military drills aboard a US aircraft carrier in the South Atlantic, marking his ever-closer relations with Washington.

Milei and Argentine Defense Minister Carlos Presti boarded the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier “in an exercise that strengthens cooperation, interoperability and joint work,” the Defense Ministry said on X.

The government shared photos of Argentina’s self-declared anarcho-capitalist president giving a thumbs-up to the camera, alongside his sister and right-hand woman, Karina Milei, and US ambassador to Argentina, Peter Lamelas.

“President Milei’s presence reminds us that we are in a new era of bilateral relations, moving beyond mere cooperation toward a deep strategic alignment, capable of fully confronting the challenges of the 21st century,” Lamelas said in a statement.

From the 333-meter-long, almost 77-meter-wide ship, they watched aerial demonstrations by F-18 Super Hornets and MH-60 Seahawk helicopters.

The joint exercises are taking place in Argentina’s exclusive economic zone.
Will USA Change Position on the Falklands?

The Falkland Islands are administered by the UK but claimed by Argentina, which calls them Las Malvinas.

The Falklands are a collection of islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, around 13,000 kilometers from Britain and 500 kilometers east of the Argentine mainland. They are made up of 778 smaller islands and two major islands, East Falkland and West Falkland.

Although France and Spain had outposts on the islands at different times, Britain regained control of the islands in 1833 and has held them ever since.

In a brief interlude in April 1982, Argentina invaded and conquered the Falkland Islands. However, the UK responded almost immediately by sending a naval task force to engage the Argentine navy and its air force. This was followed by a large-scale amphibious invasion that eventually ended in a British victory after about 74 days of fighting.

Argentina surrendered its control of the islands back to the UK—an arrangement that has stayed in place ever since. Since the island returned to British control, the US has refrained from taking a clear position on the island’s sovereignty.

Currently, the US State Department maintains that the matter is a bilateral issue between the UK and Argentina. “We encourage both parties to resolve their differences through dialogue in normal diplomatic channels. We recognize de facto United Kingdom administration of the islands but take no position regarding sovereignty,” it states.

However, the matter remains unresolved, given that Britain refuses to engage in any discussion of the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. In fact, it argues that it has “continuously, peacefully and effectively inhabited and administered” the Falkland Islands, also known as Islas Malvinas in Argentina, since 1833, with the “exception of two months of illegal occupation in 1982.” Additionally, the British government asserts that the Falklands’ citizens have the right to determine their own destiny and status.

Argentina, on the other hand, argues that it inherited the Falkland Islands from Spain upon its independence and asserts that the island’s inhabitants lack the right to self-determination.

File Image

The people of the Falkland Islands overwhelmingly support being under British patronage.

Responding to the latest reports about the potential change in American position, the Falkland government lambasted the Trump administration, reiterated that the island was British, and emphasized that about 99.8% of islanders voted in favor of remaining a British Overseas Territory.

“The Falkland Islands has complete confidence in the commitment made by the UK Government to uphold and defend our right of self-determination,” an official statement from the island’s government stated.

The Argentine President Javer Milei, a close confidante of Trump, jumped at the opportunity to call for renewed talks on the issue. “We are doing everything humanly possible so that the Argentine Malvinas, the islands, the entire territory return to the hands of Argentina,” he said in an interview posted to X. “We’re making progress like never before.”

In a separate post on X, Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno said, “The Argentine Republic once again expresses its willingness to resume bilateral negotiations with the United Kingdom that will allow for finding a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute and bring an end to the special and particular colonial situation in which they are immersed.”

It is pertinent to note that although the Falkland Islands are not protected under NATO’s Article 5 collective defense clause, which is restricted to the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer, as defined in Article 6.

Since the Falkland Islands lie in the South Atlantic, Argentina’s 1982 invasion of the islands did not trigger Article 5. And, it is for this reason that the UK would have to fend for itself if an attack were launched by any country in the future.

Notably, the US did make some efforts to diplomatically resolve the conflict between the UK and Argentina at the outset of the 1982 conflict, despite not having an official position on the matter. However, when those attempts failed, the White House provided military support to the UK by supplying intelligence and cutting-edge missiles.

Since then, the US government has routinely blocked all resolutions passed by Argentina related to the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.

A change in official position on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands could complicate matters and cause further rift in the bilateral relations between the two allies.

The Falkland Islands are currently home to a large British military presence, including RAF Mount Pleasant, which serves as a critical airbridge connecting the islands to the United Kingdom. There are infantry companies, air defense batteries, Typhoon fighter jets, and usually a Royal Navy patrol vessel among the British forces stationed there.

“Trump has developed a rapport with Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, who recently reasserted his country’s claim to the islands, but it seems highly unlikely Trump would want to dedicate any time at all – or that of his officials in the UN – on the issue. There are deep security ties between the UK and the US, and such a pivot would be heavily resisted within the
system,” British publication, The Guardian, stated.

Most of the Falklanders are British, hence their overwhelming support for the UK. But by geographical logic alone, leave aside colonial history, the Malvinas should go to Argentina.

Associate Professor Khairuddin Aljunied says education in the humanities is becoming obsolete because of the pervasiveness of AI, but that is no reason to consign the humanities to a back-burner

Khairuddin Aljunied is a fluent-speaking academic who these days is often on social media.

He possesses the credentials for being a ubiquitous presence on the social media circuit.

Aljunied is Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore and Senior Fellow at Georgetown University, USA.

An expert in the study of Islam in Southeast Asia, Aljunied is author and editor of 14 books, three of which alone were published in 2023.

This explains his prolificity as author.

Hence it was a jolt when he told a Ilmuwan Malaysia Madani forum titled “Muslim Unity in Times of Geopolitical Crisis” that several disciplines, especially in the humanities, would soon be obsolete.

According to Aljunied, the escalating presence of AI will consign the humanities and its study to obsolescence.

It is an opinion that portrays Aljunied as an academic who sees universities becoming factories for the production of utilitarian knowledge only.

If you read Aljunied’s book, Malaysia’s Forgotten Struggles for Freedom, a title published by an American university in 2015 and reprinted in Malaysia in 2024, you will glimpse a refutation of his prediction in the work’s first chapter.

It begins with an excerpt from freedom fighter Mustapha Hussain’s book, Malay Nationalism before Umno.

Mustapha belonged to the cohort of left wingers among the Malay intelligentsia who strove, from the decades before the Second World War and leading up to Merdeka, to free Malaya from British rule.

The excerpt describes stirrings in the author’s heart as he observed his people’s poverty, intimations that set his mind to free his people from colonial exploitation to gain the independence that would bring prosperity.

In Mustapha’s telling, the promptings originated in his reading of the exploits of Robin Hood and of stories of the French Revolution which saw the overthrow of a corrupt and oppressive monarchy.

These inspirational themes Mustapha, who was educated in English language schools, gleaned from books he read while in school. They touched him to the quick.

No doubt, Aljunied, surveying the AI-driven tide of new technologies rapidly coming onstream, is tempted to forget that education is not just the training of the mind; it is also the education of the sensibility.

Sensibility was what Mustapha Hussain, for instance, who studied agricultural science in Serdang in the pre-war years, possessed but this was not a random element.

It arose from the possession of a heart that was a resonator of realities he agonized over coupled with a mind that hungered for answers.

These qualities were nurtured by knowledge of history and a capacity to be inspired by its sterling aspects.

These are ineffable, intangible qualities, valuable in themselves even if incalculable.

Sterile would be the society that strips educational curricula of their value. – May 1, 2026

Ultras Malaya announce immediate boycott of Harimau Malaya until governance demands met

Influential supporter group Ultras Malaya has launched an immediate boycott of all national-team matches, demanding revocation of seven naturalised players’ citizenship, the return of team management to the Football Association of Malaysia and broad domestic football reforms, giving authorities until August 31 to act or face continued abstention

KUALA LUMPUR – Ultras Malaya have announced an immediate boycott of all matches involving the national team, intensifying pressure on Malaysian football authorities to address long-standing governance concerns.

The influential supporters’ group said the boycott would remain in force unless its three demands are met by August 31, a deadline it described as crucial to restoring integrity to a system it claims has suffered from prolonged structural issues.

Ultras Malaya, widely regarded as the driving force behind the Harimau Malaya’s matchday atmosphere, have historically played a key role in galvanising support at home and abroad.

Their absence is expected to have a significant impact on the team’s on-field environment.

The group first set out its demands on April 13, calling for the revocation of citizenship of seven naturalised players, the return of the national team’s management to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), and comprehensive reforms within the domestic football structure.

The issue surrounding naturalised and heritage players has been a point of contention in recent years, drawing mixed reactions from fans and stakeholders.

While some view the policy as a means to strengthen the national squad, critics have raised concerns over its long-term implications on identity and grassroots development.

In a statement, Ultras Malaya reiterated that its stance is rooted in principle rather than sentiment.

“We, Ultras Malaya, remain steadfast in our commitment to defending Malaysian football. This is not a reaction driven by emotion, but a stand based on principle to ensure the game is governed in a manner that is pure, honest, fair and properly structured,” the group said.

It also rejected what it described as the exploitation of football for personal interests.

“We firmly reject any attempt to use football as a tool to fulfil personal ambitions, influence or vested interests of any party or individual. The sport must not be manipulated for power or control,” it added.

The group stressed that the boycott should not be interpreted as hostility towards the national team.

“This decision is not born out of hatred towards Harimau Malaya or any party involved. It is driven by our concern for the future of Malaysian football, which must be built on dignity, accountability and responsibility,” the statement read.

Ultras Malaya said meaningful reform is overdue, citing what it described as systemic failings that have undermined the sport’s credibility.

“We are giving the relevant authorities until August 31 to respond and implement the necessary changes. If there is genuine commitment to reform, we are ready to return and support the team,” it said.

The boycott places renewed scrutiny on stakeholders, including FAM, as calls grow for decisive action to address the concerns raised by one of the country’s most influential supporter groups. – May 1, 2026

US' 'special relationship' is ONLY with Israel, not UK

From the FB page of:

The truth is that only one country in the world really has a “special relationship” with the United States and that’s Israel!
So said the UK ambassador to the UK, neatly puncturing King Charles’ recent “special relationship” rapprochement with Trump.
The FT shared the leaked tape from Sir Christian Turner and we enhanced it so you can hear it clearly (see attached video).
This is the funny bit: the UK foreign office reacted by saying that the ambassador’s words do not give the UK’s view about the United States.
Are you kidding me? He is the UK ambassador to the United States. He is literally PAID to give the UK’s view about the United States.
That’s his actual job.
The real issue here, of course, is that he is telling the truth - And you can’t do that in anglophone countries if Israel is mentioned. Look at the arrests in the UK, in the US, in Australia. Fact.

Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon have killed at least 28 people, according to the country’s National News Agency (NNA), despite a temporary United States-mediated “ceasefire”.

In the municipality of Jebchit, four people were killed and nine others wounded in an attack that destroyed a residential building. A separate attacked killed four members of one family, including a child. In the municipality of Toul, four people were killed and six wounded.

Later on Thursday, another Israeli attack hit a home in Toul, killing one person and injuring two others. In the municipality of Harouf, two people were killed, and the attack also destroyed a house.

In the town of Qana, two people were killed in an Israeli air raid.

A Lebanese soldier and several members of his family were killed in an Israeli air raid targeting their home in Kfar Rumman, in the Nabatieh district. The Lebanese Army confirmed the deaths, describing the attacks as the result of a direct strike on a residential property.

In the town of Zebdine, an Israeli drone attack killed six people near the town’s cemetery. In the town of Dibbine, two people were injured during an Israeli raid.

In the town of Qlawiyah, in Bint Jbeil district, one person was killed in Israeli air strikes.

Meanwhile, Israel’s military said one of its soldiers from the Golani Brigade was killed in southern Lebanon.

The Times of Israel, citing the Israeli military, said the soldier was killed when Hezbollah launched several explosive-laden rockets at Israeli troop positions in the village of Qantara. It said another soldier was “moderately” wounded in the attack.

Israeli forces have intensified their attacks in southern Lebanon over recent days, with artillery shelling reported in the towns of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, Yohmor al-Shaqif, and Bayt al-Sayyad.

In the past 24 hours, Israeli air attacks have killed more than 20 people, including members of two families, two Lebanese army soldiers, and three paramedics. More than 70 others, including children, were injured in the attacks.

The Israeli army has also issued more forced displacement threats for 15 southern Lebanese towns and villages, including Jebchit, Toul, al-Samanieh, Sahel al-Hnieh, Qlailah, Wadi Jilo, al-Kanisa, Kafr Jouz, Majdal Zoun, and Seddiqine.

The attacks come amid a temporary US-mediated “ceasefire” deal agreed between Israel and Lebanon that took effect on April 17.

Israel continues attacks on Lebanon despite US-brokered ceasefire

Southern Lebanon demolitions: Israeli forces wipe out entire villages and towns

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun denounced the “continuing Israeli violations” in southern Lebanon on Thursday, saying they were occurring “despite the ceasefire, as do demolitions of homes and places of worship, while the number of killed and wounded rises day after day”.

“Pressure must be exerted on Israel to ensure it respects international laws and conventions and ceases targeting civilians, paramedics, civil defence, and humanitarian health and relief organisations,” the Lebanese president added.

Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for “the swift formation of an international fact-finding committee on the crimes of the Israeli occupation”.

Political rifts deepen in Lebanon ahead of potential Israel talks

Reporting from Beirut, Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb said “Lebanon’s President Aoun has asked the US for a date for negotiations to restart but has also said that Israel must fully implement the ceasefire.

“The Lebanese government, Israel and the US have sought to distance the talks from the US talks with Iran. But with the fighting continuing to escalate, it seems the only thing that would slow it down is further pressure from Trump on Israel to stop,” he said.

Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed at least 2,586 people in Lebanon, with 8,020 wounded, according to the the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

Israel applying ‘Rafah doctrine’ to Lebanon due to lack of accountability

Israel has been applying the so-called “Rafah doctrine” to southern Lebanon, levelling infrastructure in Lebanese towns as it did in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah to avoid repopulation, Elijah Magnier, a political analyst and former war correspondent specialised in the Middle East, told Al Jazeera.

“They think they will not allow anyone to return,” Magnier said. “This is what Israelis are doing because they are unaccountable and they have the blessing of the US.”

The term “Rafah doctrine” has come to indicate Israel’s systematic destruction of residential areas, hospitals, schools, universities and all other infrastructure to prevent the return of the local population and establish a sterile area that serves their security needs.

Nicholas Noe, editor in chief of mideastwire.com, said this tactic “is also about eliminating population”.

“It sees supportive population as legitimate military targets,” Noe said. He added that, unlike Hamas in Gaza, Lebanon’s Hezbollah has had the means to resist the Israeli army’s advances, preventing a swift invasion similar to that of 1982.
