  How we got to the Hormuz incident?

  • Two missiles has hit a US navy vessel near the island of Jask after it ignored warnings from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to halt, according to local sources quoted by Iran’s Fars news agency.
  • The news came minutes after IRGC said in a statement that its navy prevented US warships from entering the Strait of Hormuz “with a firm and swift warning”, adding that more information would be provided later.
  • Earlier, President Trump said he’s launching the campaign – dubbed “Project Freedom” – at the request of countries whose vessels are stranded in the strait to “guide their ships safely out of these restricted waterways”.
  • The US announcement prompted repeated warnings from Iran that the move would result in a confrontation.

  Strait of Hormuz remains Iran’s only leverage in negotiations

  It’s difficult to know what posture the United States will adopt towards Iran until and unless there’s confirmation that one of its ships has been attacked by missiles, says Alexandru Hudisteanu, a military and maritime analyst.

  After all, “if a ship has been hit this is not something you can easily hide and so most likely, [the US] will release a communique” to confirm or deny an attack by Iran’s navy, Hudisteanu told Al Jazeera.

  It is also important to bear in mind the two sides remain at war, he said.

  For Iran, the Strait of Hormuz is the “only leverage” it has for peace negotiations unless, said Hudisteanu.

  This means Iran will do everything in its power to “defend” Hormuz including by releasing a new map, which was somewhat “excessive” on its part, he said.

  The map runs counter to international law, said Hudisteanu.

  Iran has pointed out two access points located in the territorial waters of Oman and the UAE, yet claims the strait lies within continuous Iranian waters – even though those waters do not extend to the other states’ boundaries, said Hudisteanu.

  The current impasse means that “we are in a position where there is a high risk of miscalculation from both sides,” said Hudisteanu.

US-Iran ceasefire ended ‘long before’ Iran attacked US warship

Asked whether the Iranian announcement of an attack on a US warship in the Strait of Hormuz means the end of the US-Iran ceasefire, analyst Foad Izadi says the truce ended much earlier.

“The ceasefire started on April 7 and ended on April 8 when the United States blockaded Iranian ports. Under international law and under the US law, blockades are acts of war,” Izadi, a professor at the University of Tehran, told Al Jazeera.

He noted that 24 hours before the second round of US-Iranian talks in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, had been scheduled, the US shot at an Iranian ship before capturing it “like pirates”.

“Attacking an Iranian ship’s engine is an act of war as well, so this is not the first time you have someone shooting,” he added.
