Summary

  • Muhyiddin says Hadi personally said he wants the Bersatu president to remain as PN chairperson.

  • He says he offered PAS to lead the coalition, but the Islamist party turned it down.

Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin has dismissed allegations that PAS is backing a plan to undermine his control of the opposition coalition.

Muhyiddin said as far as he knows, he has the support of PAS - including its president Abdul Hadi Awang - to continue serving as PN chairperson.

"In the last meeting several months ago to discuss PN matters, Hadi said he supported me as PN chairperson.

"So who do I trust, you (journalists) or the heads of PN parties?" he said when met by reporters after the Pagoh Bersatu annual meeting today.

Last month, Malaysiakini reported that PAS proposed restructuring PN to grant Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin - who is the opposition leader in Parliament - significant operational powers.

Under the proposed changes, an executive committee helmed by Hamzah would be formed to oversee PN’s operations, while the presidents of PAS, Bersatu, Gerakan, and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party would retain their roles in the existing supreme council.

According to sources, the move is designed to position Hamzah as PN’s prime ministerial candidate, ready to take the reins if the coalition captures Putrajaya in the next general election.

However, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan denied such plans were afoot.

‘PAS declined leadership rotation’

Commenting further on PAS' confidence in him, Muhyiddin said he had actually offered for the Islamist party to take the helm of PN as part of a rotation in leadership.

"I said it would be good for PAS to take over, take turns so that PAS is the PN chair... But they did not want it.

"They said 'no, Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) should continue (as chairperson)," the Bersatu president added.
