Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah believed that party Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has the potential to become a great leader.
In an interview with Mingguan Malaysia, Razaleigh said Akmal (above) was attempting to rejuvenate Umno Youth’s spirits by being vocal and it seems to be working within the party.
“That’s why I defended him when he argued with DAP Teresa Kok over the halal certification issue.
“I’m not looking at this through a racial lens but what Akmal said was in line with the party’s struggles.
“But if you ask me how far he will be successful in politics, inside or outside of Umno using such tactics, only God knows.
“Akmal is still new so let’s give him time. I believe he has a bright future,” the former Gua Musang MP added.

On Sept 8, Akmal slammed Kok for questioning the proposal to require restaurants and food companies that do not serve pork and alcohol to obtain halal certification.
Describing the Seputeh MP as a "Nyonya tua" (old Nyonya), Akmal said Kok should not have interfered in Islamic affairs related to halal certification.
"It doesn't even involve you, and the real shame of this country is that there are parliamentarians like you, old lady, who endlessly disturb the harmony of the country.
"If you don't know about our religion, don't talk.
"You're better off keeping silent, and I also ask the government to prepare a non-halal logo to stick to the forehead of this old lady," he was reported as saying.
Kok had since filed a suit against Akmal for RM25 million over his remarks.
Rejuvenating Umno Youth
On Sept 23, Razaleigh said there was no need for Akmal to apologise over the matter, adding that what the Umno leader did was in line with the party’s constitution and mission.
When asked about Akmal’s actions, which some people found thuggish, Razaleigh said it depends on how people view things.
Pressed on whether he supports such behaviour, the former finance minister insisted that Akmal was merely trying to get support for Umno Youth.
“It’s been a long time since we had an Umno Youth leader like him. From Harun Idris to Khairy Jamaluddin, it seemed like (during their leadership) that Umno Youth was non-existent in the party,” he added.
