Religious teacher charged with 8 counts of sexual assault, molesting students
Court grants bail after the teacher’s lawyer says his client poses no risk of interfering with the victims as he has been transferred to the district education office
Ahmad Fahmi Haron pleaded not guilty at the Butterworth sessions court to eight charges of physical sexual assault and outraging the modesty of several male students.
PETALING JAYA: A religious teacher was charged at the Butterworth sessions court today with eight counts of physical sexual assault and outraging the modesty of several male students between May 2023 and January this year.
Ahmad Fahmi Haron, 52, pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read out before sessions court judge Ooi Sheow Yean.
He is accused of committing physical sexual assault by holding and rubbing the genitals of a 15-year-old male student at a school in the Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district between April and May 2024.
The offence was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and may also be punishable by whipping upon conviction.
He is also accused of using criminal force against six male students aged between 13 and 17 by rubbing their buttocks, thighs, hands and cheeks, and touching their genitals without their consent with the intent of outraging their modesty.
The offences were allegedly committed in a school room and canteen between May 2023 and January 2026.
These charges were brought under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine or whipping, or any two of those punishments upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Wan Amira Ruzaini Wan Abdul Razak appeared for the prosecution, while Fahmi was represented by lawyer Nazreev Najeeb.
Wan Amira Ruzaini objected to bail, citing the fact that the charges involved underage students.
Nazreev, however, asked the court to exercise its discretion to grant bail, informing the court that his client had been transferred to the SPU district education office and posed no risk of interfering with the victims.
The court granted bail of RM45,000 with one surety for all eight charges.
