KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 — Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has directed his ministry to begin urgent consultations with the Ministry of Finance following concerns over the impact of rising diesel prices on the tourism transport sector.

In a Facebook post, he said the ministry has been monitoring the situation closely and has received feedback from industry associations and stakeholders.

“Our discussions will focus on the current situation and consider targeted measures, including temporary time‑bound support to ease short‑term pressures,” he said, adding that some of the cost pressures were influenced by developments in the Middle East.

He said the diesel price increase had placed sudden strain on operators who rely heavily on the fuel, and warned that unmanaged cost escalation could “trigger a chain reaction affecting inbound tourism, businesses and the overall stability of the tourism ecosystem.”

Tiong said the government must balance immediate challenges with long‑term sector health, noting the need to strengthen safety standards, vehicle performance and service quality.

He said any measures introduced would follow a “stabilise and upgrade” approach to help operators navigate current pressures while encouraging gradual improvements, including vehicle renewal, appropriate financial support and regulatory enhancements.

Tiong stressed that the government’s objective was to build a more resilient and competitive tourism transport system rather than rely on short‑term fixes.

He urged industry players to maintain close engagement with the government and participate in “rational and constructive dialogue” as the sector prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

He also called for calm, saying the government would work to balance competing interests and find workable solutions even if “the measures introduced may not fully satisfy every party.”

TOKYO, March 21 — Iran is willing to help Japanese ships sail a vital route for global fuel supplies, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Kyodo News in an interview published today

Japan depends on crude oil imports from the Middle East, most of which transits the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has effectively closed the strait in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes, sending countries reliant on the shipping lane scrambling for alternative routes and tapping reserves.

In a telephone interview with Kyodo News, Araghchi denied closing the passageway, insisting instead that countries attacking Iran face restrictions, while others were being offered assistance.

“We have not closed the strait. It is open,” he said.

He added that Iran was prepared to ensure safe passage for Japan.

The world’s number-four economy is the fifth-biggest importer of oil, with 95 percent of it coming from the Middle East and 70 percent passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

On Monday, Tokyo said it was beginning the release of its strategic oil reserves—among the world’s largest.

The country holds reserves equivalent to 254 days of domestic consumption.

Members of the International Energy Agency agreed on March 11 to tap oil stockpiles to cushion the surge in prices caused by the war in the Middle East—by far the largest-ever response of its kind. — AFP

KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 — DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook today called for an end to the public dispute between party veteran Lim Guan Eng and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow over the state’s revised quit rent rates, saying the matter should be resolved internally.

In a statement, Loke said the party leadership was “deeply concerned and disturbed” by the ongoing exchanges, and said internal differences over public policy should not be aired in a way that undermines the party’s own state government.

“This is an unhealthy and inappropriate way to address internal differences on public policy matters,” he said, adding that he would convene a meeting involving both leaders to resolve the matter amicably.

Loke said Lim, as a former DAP secretary-general and former Penang chief minister, should appreciate the importance of party discipline.

“Any disagreements, especially from backbenchers on State Government decisions, should be addressed through established internal mechanisms rather than aired publicly,” Loke said.

At the same time, he said Chow should take seriously the concerns raised, as they involve public interest and complaints from affected stakeholders.

He said any review of quit rent in commercial areas must be carried out in a “balanced, responsive, and considerate” manner, adding that quit rent involving educational institutions such as public schools should not be increased excessively and should instead be kept at a nominal rate.

Loke said the public spat must end so party leaders can refocus on serving the people rather than prolonging a dispute that has already drawn wide public attention.

The intervention follows a series of public exchanges over Penang’s revised 2026 quit rent structure, which the state government says took effect on January 1 this year and was introduced to correct disparities in rates that had not been reviewed since 1994.

Lim had earlier questioned cases of sharp increases, including one he said rose from RM6 to RM19,400 a year and another from RM745 to RM489,775, while arguing that the state government’s explanation had raised many doubts.

Chow has defended the revision, saying some cases highlighted publicly omitted key details such as land size and actual land use, and that the rates are based on land classification, size and current use.

The Penang government had offered a 50 per cent rebate on 2026 quit rent for all landowners, subject to minimum rates and conditions.

The state also fixed quit rent for school land at a nominal RM50 per title this year, excluding international schools.

On March 12, Chow said the state government had received 1,025 appeals over the revised rates.

Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio says he is open to negotiating with the US over trade, but refused to entertain a leadership shake-up

A top official in the Cuban government has denied “categorically” that Havana is negotiating with the United States over the fate of its president, Miguel Diaz-Canel.

On Friday, Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio told a news conference that shake-ups in the government were not up for discussion.

“The political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation, and of course neither the president ‌nor the position of any official in Cuba is subject to negotiation with the United States,” Fernandez de Cossio said.

His remarks were a firm repudiation of reports that the administration of United States President Donald Trump was seeking the removal of Diaz-Canel.

The New York Times reported earlier this week that, while Trump is pushing for Diaz-Canel’s ouster, he is not seeking the dismantlement of other parts of the Cuban government.

The plan would be similar to what Trump implemented in Venezuela after his January 3 attack to abduct and imprison Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. That manoeuvre left intact the rest of Maduro’s government.

Aid flotilla for Cuba sets sail from Mexico

Critics point out, however, that carrying out such a plan in Cuba would leave the family of longtime leader Fidel Castro in positions of power — and it would stop short of dismantling a government long accused of violent repression against its people.

Diaz-Canel is the first president in Cuba not to be a part of the Castro family since 1976.

Fidel Castro led the country from the time of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 until 2008, and his brother Raul Castro succeeded him as president from 2008 to 2018.

According to a constitutional reform set in 2019, presidents in Cuba serve five-year terms, which means Diaz-Canel will reach the end of his second term in 2028.

Diaz-Canel also serves as the head of the island’s Communist Party, a position he assumed in 2021. That, too, has a five-year term.

But Trump has repeatedly indicated he would like to see Cuba’s communist leadership fall quickly, and he has implemented a series of measures to weaken the government.

On January 11, Trump announced that Venezuela, a close regional ally of Cuba, would no longer exchange oil or funds with the island.

Then, on January 29, Trump issued an executive order labelling Cuba an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the US.

To address the “national emergency”, Trump pledged to impose steep import taxes on any country that sent oil to Cuba, effectively placing the island under a fuel blockade.

Cuba’s ageing energy grid relies on fossil fuels to provide the country with electricity. This week, after nearly six weeks without oil imports, Cuba briefly found itself in the grips of an islandwide blackout, affecting nearly 10 million people.

The United Nations has warned of humanitarian “collapse” on the island, as conditions worsen.

Already, Cuba has been under a total trade embargo from the US since the Cold War in the 1960s.

With the US only about 145 kilometres (90 miles) away, critics have blamed the embargo for destabilising the island’s economy, in addition to government mismanagement.

While tensions between the US and Cuba briefly eased in 2016, Trump took office for his first term the following year, and he reimposed US restrictions on travel and trade that had been briefly lifted.

He has continued that “maximum pressure” campaign into his second term, which began in January 2025. The Cuban government has acknowledged it is in talks with the Trump administration to lift the current fuel blockade.

Trump, meanwhile, has floated the idea of leading a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, describing its government as being “in its last moments of life“.

“I do believe I’ll be the honour [sic], having the honour of taking Cuba. That’d be good. It’s a big honour,” Trump said on Monday from the Oval Office.

“Whether I free it, take it, I think I could do anything I want with it, if you want to know the truth. They’re a very weakened nation right now.”

Legal experts, however, have warned that such threats amount to a violation of Cuban sovereignty.

In his remarks on Friday, Fernandez de Cossio did say that Cuba was willing to negotiate with the US in areas like trade.

He noted that Cuba is seeking compensation for damages wrought by the US embargo, and that there are 5,913 claims from the US for property nationalised during the Cuban Revolution.

“These are very complex issues that can be discussed, but they require dialogue,” Fernandez de Cossio said. “They require sitting down and are legitimate matters.”

For his part, Diaz-Canel has accused the Trump administration of waging “economic war” on the island.

“The US publicly threatens Cuba — almost daily — with the forceful overthrow of its constitutional order,” the Cuban leader wrote on Tuesday.

“They plot and announce plans to seize control of the country — of its resources, its properties and even the very economy they seek to suffocate in order to force our surrender.”

Should the US press for control over Cuba, Diaz-Canel warned it would face “impregnable resistance”.

Trump says considering ‘winding down’ Iran war but rules out ceasefire

TEHRAN: President Donald Trump said yesterday that the US was considering “winding down” military operations against Iran but was not seeking a ceasefire with the Islamic republic.

Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, meanwhile, claimed in a message to mark the first day of the Persian New Year to have delivered a “dizzying blow” to enemies in the three-week-old Middle East war.

Fresh blasts hit Tehran on Friday and Israel accused Iran of attacking holy sites in Jerusalem after a strike left a crater in the Old City near the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Shailok cry babies

On Wall Street, stocks ended sharply lower after oil prices shot up on fears that lengthy supply disruptions could lead to a global economic downturn.

All three major indices were firmly in the red, with the broad-based S&P 500 down 1.5% and the price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, rising 3.3% to US$112.19 per barrel.

Turkey lashed out at Israel, meanwhile, for striking Syrian army camps in southern Syria, calling it a “dangerous escalation” and urging the international community to intervene.

Syria has so far avoided being dragged into the regional war that began on Feb 28 when Israel and the US began striking Iran, which has hit back by firing ballistic missiles and drones at countries across the region.

Lebanon has also been targeted by Israeli airstrikes against Iranian ally Hezbollah which have left more than 1,000 people dead according to the Lebanese health ministry.

‘We have won’

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said the US was “getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great military efforts in the Middle East”.

The social media post was the strongest indication yet from the US president that he may be prepared to soon end hostilities.

It came shortly after Trump told reporters at the White House that he was not looking for a truce.

“I think we have won,” Trump said. “I don’t want to do a ceasefire. You know you don’t do a ceasefire when you’re literally obliterating the other side,” he added.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

In his post, Trump said other nations will have to take responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane, which has effectively been blockaded by Iran and which sees a fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas pass through it in peacetime.

“The Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it – The US does not!” he said. 😂😂😂

“If asked, we will help these Countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn’t be necessary once Iran’s threat is eradicated,” he added.

Trump also said the US wants to talk to Iran but “there’s nobody to talk to” because of the killing of Iran’s former supreme leader and other top officials.

Iran’s new supreme leader has not appeared in public since being named to succeed his father, Ali Khamenei.

In a written statement to mark Nowruz, the Persian New Year, Mojtaba Khamenei said Iranians have “dealt him (the enemy) a dizzying blow so that he now starts uttering contradictory words and nonsense”.

“At the moment, due to the particular unity that has been created between you our compatriots – despite all the differences in religious, intellectual, cultural and political origins – the enemy has been defeated,” Khamenei said.

The statement of defiance came as Iranians marked a muted Nowruz punctuated by the sound of loud blasts in eastern and northern Tehran.

Shoppers were out in force buying new clothes and gifts, although pavements were less packed than usual for this time of year, with many people having fled north.

Gulf nations targeted

Trump has repeatedly said he does not plan to send US ground troops into combat with Iran, but The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that an additional 2,200-2,500 US Marines were headed to the region.

Trump would not confirm a report by the Axios news outlet that he was considering an occupation or blockade of Iran’s Kharg Island oil hub to pressure Tehran to reopen the strait.

“I may have a plan or I may not,” Trump said when asked by an AFP reporter.

US forces hit Kharg with strikes that Trump said had “totally obliterated” all military targets on the island, but Washington has so far avoided hitting its oil infrastructure.

In Jerusalem, the Israeli military blamed “Iranian missile fragments” for a blast that hit the Old City.

kt notes: Satanyahu wants to build the Jewish 3rd temple on top so the destruction of al Aqsa mosque (by "whoever") will be gnam gnam for his needs

👿👿👿👿👿👿👿👿👿

It was not immediately clear if the missile had been intercepted or what its intended target was.

Iranian attacks continued meanwhile on energy infrastructure in the Gulf.

Yesterday, drone attacks hit Kuwait’s giant Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery, causing a fire that was later brought under control, a day after a direct hit on Qatar’s vital Ras Laffan natural gas facility.

The attack caused “extensive damage” that Qatar’s state energy company said could cost US$20 billion a year in lost revenue and take five years to repair.

That could lead to high energy prices worldwide that outlast the conflict, increasing inflation and lowering economic growth.

Guan Eng: Voters wouldn't have backed Chow if manifesto allowed steep land tax hikes

Published: Mar 20, 2026 3:15 PM
Updated: 7:47 PM

Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng today claimed that many Penang voters would not have supported Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow if they had known the Madani government’s 2023 state election manifesto allowed drastic increases in land tax rates.

In a statement today, Lim said he was surprised by Chow’s recent remarks that an election manifesto does not stop the state government from introducing new initiatives or policies if deemed necessary for the state’s economic stability and well-being.

The DAP veteran said the manifesto launched ahead of the state polls did not indicate that land tax rates could be raised by such large amounts.

He further criticised Chow’s attempt to compare the land tax hike with the proposed Penang International Financial Centre (PIFC), which was likewise not mentioned in the manifesto but pursued due to changing economic demands.

Lim argued that while the PIFC could bring benefits to the state and its people, steep land tax increases would instead harm the financial position and economic livelihoods of landowners.

“So, I ask Chow to fulfil the promises in the 2023 state election manifesto, which guarantees that no party is left behind or marginalised.

Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) houses the Penang chief minister’s office and state government departments

“The principle of a welfare state must always be the guiding principle, then we will certainly build together in the socio-economic development of Penang as a whole,” said the former chief minister.

The relationship between Lim and Chow has grown fraught in recent times, with the pair butting heads publicly.

While Lim has been openly critical of Chow’s leadership, this is his harshest attack on his successor thus far.

Land tax calculation

Commenting further, Lim condemned Chow’s defence of the officials from the Lands and Mines Office who calculated the new rates.

He noted that in several cases, the revised amounts were later reduced by as much as 80 to 90 percent, raising concerns about the accuracy of the assessment system.

“If the system for calculating the increase in land tax rates is correct, fair, orderly, and professional, why is there a need to reduce land tax by 80 percent or 90 percent? Why still defend government officials who make more mistakes than the people who are being wronged?

“A reduction of 80 percent or 90 percent proves that the system for calculating land tax increases is flawed, failed, and problematic.

“Therefore, this system needs to be reviewed and replaced with a correct, orderly, and reasonable system for calculating land tax rates, after prior consultation with the relevant stakeholders,” Lim asserted.

He cited examples of what he described as excessive increases, including a school in Butterworth that allegedly saw its land tax rise more than 4,000-fold.

He also highlighted cases in Batu Kawan - Chow’s parliamentary constituency - including a village in Juru where land tax for a house purportedly rose from RM12 to over RM34,000, and another landowner who claimed to be under severe financial pressure due to the revised rates.

Butterworth in Penang

Lim said his office had received numerous complaints from residents struggling with the higher land tax burden.

“The chief minister should be reminded of the spirit of struggle in conjunction with DAP’s 60th anniversary. The people should be put first!” he said.

In touch with the people

Previously, Lim urged Chow to go on the ground to see for himself the effect of the new land tax on the general population.

In response, Chow yesterday denied that he was out of touch with the concerns of people in Penang.

He was reported by The Star as saying that he has continuously engaged with residents in all districts of the state, particularly via the Jelajah Ramadan programme.

Earlier, he said that authorities have already resolved more than 500 out of over 2,000 land tax-related cases.

In September last year, Chow announced that the Penang government gazetted new land tax rates that would affect nearly 370,000 land titles in the state.

He said land tax rates for rural housing rose by 127.27 percent, while urban housing saw a 29.63 percent increase. For industrial land, rates increased by 151.94 percent in urban areas and 200.93 percent in rural areas.

Focusing on appeals now

In a short statement in response to Lim, Chow said that presently, the focus of the Penang state government is to allow landowners to appeal.

“Each case will be reviewed, and results will be made known.

“The state government has already announced seven concessions last week,” he said in a one-paragraph statement to the media.

In September last year, the Penang government announced new tax rates for gazetted land effective from Jan 1, 2026, involving nearly 370,000 land titles across the state.

Bernama reported Chow saying that the National Land Council approved the new rates in 2024. He added that a review would only be conducted every 10 years, with the new rates remaining unchanged without any increase during that period until a new review is carried out.

MKINI readers write-in section:

H LGE, you brought him up. Please disagree behind closed doors please.

That is our modus operandi during your time and it remains our modus operandi now too.

Please.
Who needs an enemy, when you have Guan Eng? He single handedly combines the vitriol of PAS, Versatile, UMNO and all other opposing parties, in his hatred attacks in Chow. He wants to be back as CM, even if it means the destruction of DAP, in Penang.
The increase in quit rent affects the commercial and industrial players more than ordinary residential owners. The latter would find the hike of 2 or 3 ringgits per month tolerable. After all, the quit rent had been stagnant for a long period of time. So, if there is any whispering into the ears of that someone who is, anyway, always on the look out for opportunities to attack Chow, it is likely to be from the former.
The more you talk, the more people gonna feel awful & disrespectful towards you…keep your own arrogant sh*t to your self, CM Chow is doing a good job in Penang, would be great if you can show your support instead of continuing acting like a crying baby…
Oops, LGE DAP Secretary General position was concluded in dining room @ a restaurant just before entering Taman Yulek, Cheras Parliament
LGE create terrible trouble in Malacca,. Kena kick out. Reached Penang grabbed CM post. Created havoc due to Arrogance. Forced out. Now again creating problem. Hobby is create problems. Lime Getting Entangled
LGE- please leave the scene. Your time is over. Stop this public spat. Your arrogance dies not auger well for the party
Exactly. Shows how selfish and arrogant he has become.
Chow is honest, sincere and is doing a good. For LGE to hound Chow continuously is unprofessional since he is also from DAP. If he has grouses to raise, he should talk to him privately rather than undermining him publicly and preventing him from concentrating on his job. He has no comments on the performance of his sister when she was Deputy FM. She was not up to the mark and that is why she was removed. It appears that he has an agenda to undermine him as he does not want him to perform better than him and probably wants his previous job.
He should focus on his earlier stance of asking for a RCI on Azam rather than diverting towards Chow. He should stop rocking the boat and leave Chow alone.
Enough is enough.
Lets wait and see how your sister will fare as CM.100% worse.
LGE's sister for CM of Penang? You must be kidding!!!
When one is too full of himself it will eventually show .
He moved to the finance minister post in 2018 and thought that he will be in this position for a long time. He did not foresee the Sheraton Move, which was successful partly due to the arrogance of some new ministers that did not go down well with the Malay majority.

LGE got a DNAA from his corruption case but was later recharged and is still fighting in court for this. He was bypassed and overlooked after GE-15 and is in the political wilderness now. He did not perform too well in his recent party's election and has been made an advisor ( basically told to retire and a face saving gesture).
He is now trying very hard to be relevant again and perhaps wrangle a DNAA leading to a full acquittal, just like a DPM.

When others in the UG speaks out against the government it is labeled as betrayal but when he opposed his own party member that is the CM of Penang it is called democracy. Such is the unbecoming behaviour.

No venture no gain.
