PETALING JAYA, May 17 — Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said they will vacate the Pandan and Setiawangsa seats tomorrow.

In announcing their takeover of the Malaysian United Party here today, the two former ministers also said they were officially leaving PKR.

The duo said they would notify the Dewan Rakyat Speaker of their withdrawal tomorrow.

Rafizi and Nik Nazmi also said they would formally write to the PKR secretary-general on Tuesday to inform the party of their decision.

At a later press conference, Rafizi said the move was intended to ensure their departure would not be seen as party-hopping, as they respected the mandate given to them under PKR and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the previous general election.

Rafizi added that he believed other MPs would eventually consider similar moves once a new political platform was established, although he acknowledged that the Anti-Party Hopping Law remained a major constraint.

He said the law effectively binds MPs and assemblymen across all parties, including PKR, Amanah, DAP and Bersatu, limiting their options despite shifting political considerations.

“That is why Nik and I need to pave the way first by establishing this platform and providing it in advance. Any further decisions will be up to other elected representatives,” he said.

Nik Nazmi said the decision to vacate their seats was made to allow them the freedom to join a new political party, Bersama, while also respecting voters’ mandate under Pakatan Harapan and PKR.

“This is not a small decision, but we feel it is important to be fair to voters who elected us under the PH and PKR ticket in the last general election,” he said.

He added that building Bersama would require time ahead of upcoming elections, where the party intends to field candidates and develop its political narrative.

Rafizi said concerns over potential legal action also influenced their approach, noting that PKR’s bond arrangements would typically apply only if MPs left the party to join another while retaining their seats.

He said their decision to vacate their seats meant they were returning the mandate to voters and therefore would not be subject to such conditions.

“That is also why the announcement is structured differently. PKR’s lawsuit or bond arrangement only applies if we leave the party and join another while remaining MPs. Previously, there were no MPs willing to vacate their seats.

“Everyone wants to be an MP but also wants to switch parties. What we are doing today is vacating our seats and returning the mandate to the people. Therefore, when we leave as PKR members on Tuesday, it will not be subject to the bond. That is why we are taking this approach,” he said.

Rafizi added that the decision on whether a by-election would be held now rested with the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.

He noted that under the Federal Constitution, a by-election is generally not required if a seat has been vacant for more than three years after the general election, but said there is also a provision allowing the Speaker to call one if the vacancy affects the government’s majority.

“In the current situation, it should not apply as the government’s majority is 150 even without the two of us. The majority now stands at 152.

“Once we vacate, it becomes 150, which is still strong compared to the required 112. So, there should not be a by-election, but ultimately it depends on the Speaker’s decision,” he said.

Both men also said they would continue serving their respective constituencies — Pandan and Setiawangsa — after vacating their seats.

JOHOR BAHRU, May 17 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim warned political partners in national unity government today that he is prepared to call for an early general election if their political "intimidation" and threats persist.

Speaking at the 2026 Pakatan Harapan Convention here, Anwar, who is the PH chairman, directly referenced the ongoing state-level tensions, escalating the situation to a national scale.

“If it is true that they feel it is time for the election to take place in Johor, we will continue in Negeri Sembilan, and perhaps the people can decide for the whole of Malaysia,” he said in his keynote address.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has praised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's "bravery" in leading the move to allow Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) graduates admission to four courses in public universities related to Chinese studies.

Loke said that, unlike Anwar's predecessors, the Pakatan Harapan chairperson had delivered on his promises to provide a pathway for UEC graduates to enter public universities.

"Let's not get mired in these issues. UEC is an issue regarding access to education," Loke said in his speech during the Harapan convention at the Johor Persada International Convention Centre this afternoon.

Johor Pakatan Harapan chief Aminolhuda Hassan is not holding back his punches after BN said it would contest all 56 state seats in the next Johor polls.

Speaking at the Harapan national convention in Johor Bahru, he told coalition members it was clear Harapan and BN could no longer work together, and that the latter must be defeated.

"Johor is where our 'friend' (Umno) was born. There was a time when we figuratively buried them here, their birthplace.

"God willing, in this coming election, we will bury them for a second time," he said to loud cheers from delegates.

Harapan had ousted BN from power in Johor during the 2018 general election.

However, BN returned to the helm in 2020 after Bersatu left Harapan.

The state held a snap election in 2022, which saw BN winning a supermajority thanks to low turnout, benefiting it in multicornered fights.

However, these gains were reversed in the 2022 general election, with BN winning just nine out of 25 Parliament seats in Johor.

Redelineation reluctance

Aminolhuda claimed that BN was still traumatised from its 2018 defeat - which he purports is why it has yet to carry out a redelineation exercise in the state.

He claimed this is because seven mostly urban state constituencies have more than 100,000 voters, a majority of whom are Harapan supporters.
Earlier at the convention, Negeri Sembilan Harapan chief Aminuddin Harun - who is also the menteri besar - said the betrayal the coalition suffered in the state should serve as a lesson when preparing for polls in Malacca, Johor, and Negeri Sembilan.

He said Harapan must also set aside its internal differences and mobilise the coalition's machinery to ensure victory at the polls.

Aminuddin is a close ally of Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who are widely speculated to reveal a movement against Harapan lynchpin PKR this afternoon.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said Pakatan Harapan will respond to any dissolution of the Johor state assembly with a similar move in Negeri Sembilan.

In a possible allusion to Johor BN chairperson Onn Hafiz Ghazi's announcement that the coalition will go solo in the upcoming state election, Loke said Harapan will contest all seats in Negeri Sembilan as well.

"In conclusion, we have entered the arena now. Another party has announced that they will contest 56 (seats) in Johor.

"I would like to suggest to the esteemed chairperson, if they want to contest 56 seats in Johor, we will contest 36 seats in Negeri Sembilan," the Seremban MP said in his speech during the Harapan convention at the Johor Persada International Convention Centre this afternoon.

"If the Johor state assembly is dissolved tomorrow, we will dissolve the Negeri Sembilan state assembly tomorrow also," he added.

As the Eurovision Song Contest took to the stage for the Saturday night final in Vienna, thousands protested outside against Israel’s inclusion, and five countries boycotted the event over the genocidal war on Gaza.

Protesters marched through the Austrian capital to highlight what critics described as a double standard. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) organisers refused to exclude Israel, despite banning Russia following its invasion of Ukraine four years ago.

Eurovision, which attracted 166 million viewers last year, is seeing the largest boycott in its 70-year history.

Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia all withdrew because of Israel’s inclusion, with some of their national broadcasters refusing to air the show.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has emerged as one of Israel’s strongest critics in Europe, said on Friday that the decision puts Spain on “the right side of history”.

Last month, more than 1,000 artists called on fans to boycott Eurovision in an open letter against Israel’s participation. Among the artists were outspoken critics of Israel, Macklemore and Paloma Faith. Macklemore has released songs protesting against Israel’s war in Gaza.

Double standards

On Monday, Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnes Callamard denounced the EBU for allowing Israel to participate.

“The failure of the European Broadcasting Union to suspend Israel from Eurovision, as it did with Russia, is an act of cowardice and an illustration of blatant double standards when it comes to Israel,” she said.

Reporting from Vienna, Al Jazeera’s Charlie Angela said 2,000 demonstrators gathered in the city earlier on Saturday to protest against Israel’s participation.

Angela reported that protesters accused the competition of normalising Israel’s actions in Gaza, adding that Eurovision was “bending over backwards” to justify including Israel while excluding Russia.

Russia has faced a widespread cultural boycott following the Ukraine invasion. It is banned from international football tournaments, and FIFA and UEFA have excluded Russian domestic teams from all competitions, including the Champions League.

The winner of Eurovision will be selected by both a professional jury and TV viewers voting for their favourite act.

Austria won the competition last year, with Israel second.

The Israeli government was later accused of unfairly influencing voting. New rules have since been introduced.

Plan for unity govt dissolution after Johor BN’s solo move, Tony Pua tells PH

The former Damansara MP says PH-BN pact is now an 'awkward arrangement' that must come to a timely end

Former Damansara MP Tony Pua said it would be better to lose the next general election ‘with dignity and honour’ than to risk being betrayed by Umno.

PETALING JAYA: Former Damansara MP Tony Pua has called for a timeline to dissolve the unity government, saying it is “completely untenable” for Pakatan Harapan to continue its political arrangement with Barisan Nasional in the next general election after BN’s decision to contest all 56 seats in the upcoming Johor state election.

Pua said Umno had “revealed its true colours” by announcing its intention to field candidates across all Johor state constituencies in the election, accusing the party of wanting to “have its cake and eat it too”.

He said PH had made significant compromises to ensure political stability under the unity government framework at the federal level, which he said had benefited Malaysia.

“But the awkward arrangement must come to a timely end,” he said in a Facebook post.

“There is no reason to trust Umno leaders who claim that Johor BN’s decision does not affect the (PH-BN) relationship at the federal level.”

Pua acknowledged that PH might face electoral difficulties if it contests independently, but said it would be better to lose “with dignity and honour” than to risk being betrayed.

“Biar putih tulang, jangan putih di mata,” he said, quoting a Malay proverb meaning it is better to die honourably than to live in shame.

Pua’s remarks were made following Johor BN’s announcement yesterday that it would contest all 56 state assembly seats on its own in the upcoming state election.

Johor BN chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the decision was made after taking into account the views and aspirations of the people of Johor, as well as feedback from Umno and BN grassroots leaders in the state.

Johor PH today announced that it will also contest all 56 seats in the upcoming state election, in response to BN’s decision to field candidates in every constituency.

Deputy Johor Umno chairman Ahmad Maslan yesterday said Umno and BN will continue to back the unity government at the federal level despite Johor BN’s plans to go solo in the next state polls.

Ahmad, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, said Johor BN’s decision to contest the state polls on its own highlighted the “uniqueness of Malaysian democracy” and took into account the fact that Johor has traditionally been a BN stronghold.

On May 3, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was highly likely the coalition will contest the 16th general election on its own.

JOHOR BAHRU, May 17 — Johor Pakatan Harapan (PH) today announced that it will contest in all 56 state constituencies in the upcoming polls, following Barisan Nasional’s (BN) announcement yesterday.

Johor PH chief Aminolhuda Hassan said the decision was made after BN Johor announced that they would contest in all state seats on their own.

He said Johor PH will not back down on this decision and dismissed any cooperation with BN for the state polls.

“Johor BN lost in the 2018 election and it is possible that this can happen again in the upcoming state election,” he said when speaking at the 2026 PH Convention held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre here today.

Yesterday, Johor BN confirmed it would contest all 56 seats in the coming state election, effectively ruling out any electoral cooperation with PH Perikatan Nasional (PN) or even Muda.

Johor BN chief and state menteri besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi was reported saying that the decision was made after taking into account the views of Johoreans as well as the grassroots leadership of Umno and the state BN.

Aminolhuda, who is Johor Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) chief, also criticised the recent appointment of five non-elected state assemblymen, saying it was for BN to remain in power.

He claimed that Johor BN was afraid of losing the people’s support, especially in the urban areas of the state.

“There are seven state constituencies in Johor with more than 100,000 voters where the state government should have carried out an electoral redelineation.

“If the redelineation is done, the urban areas will immediately see an increase of voters who are largely in favour of PH,” he said.

Aminolhuda pointed out that Johor is still a state strongly influenced by PH as the coalition has secured 14 parliamentary seats out of 26 in the state.

On May 7, the Johor state legislative assembly approved a constitutional amendment Bill on the appointment of five non-elected assemblymen.

The Bill had received a two-thirds vote involving 40 out of 56 assemblymen, all of whom are from the government bloc.

JOHOR BAHRU, May 17 — The state’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) considers the prospect of a political alliance with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the next state election to be effectively over, said chairman Aminolhuda Hassan

The Johor PH chief said Johor BN chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s yesterday announcement that it would contest all seats in the state independently was essentially “closing the door” on any electoral pact.

“We take this as Johor BN declaring that there will be no cooperation with PH,” he added during a press conference at the 2026 PH Convention, held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre today.

Aminolhuda, who is also the Johor Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) chief, said that PH took note that Onn Hafiz’s statement had also answered questions on the possibility of a BN-PH electoral pact for the coming polls.

He added that Johor BN’s decision yesterday had also indirectly determined the state’s PH political direction ahead of the convention and the upcoming state election.

“However, the relationship between PH and BN at the federal level remains good, and this can be seen in the working relationship among leaders in the unity government,” he said.

Yesterday, Johor BN confirmed it will contest all 56 seats in the coming state election, effectively ruling out any electoral cooperation with PH, Perikatan Nasional (PN) or even Muda.

Onn Hafiz was reported as saying that the decision was made after taking into account the views of Johor residents as well as the grassroots leadership of Umno and the state BN.

Unlike the federal administration, Johor is not a coalition government and instead has been governed alone by BN since the 2022 state election.

PH is part of the “balancing force”, the term Johor uses for what is effectively the state’s opposition.

PETALING JAYA, May 17 — A year after their departure from the Cabinet, PKR’s Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad today announced that they will take over the Malaysian United Party (MUP) as their new political platform.

The announcement was made today at the PJ Performing Arts Centre in a symbolic handover ceremony. MUP’s founder and president, Tan Gin Theam, presented the two PKR stalwarts with a mock party registration certificate to officiate the transition.

MUP or Parti Bersama Malaysia is a little-known, Penang-based political party that was officially registered on December 2, 2016.

Today’s announcement coincides with the Pakatan Harapan convention taking place at the same time in Johor Baru, the first time such an event has been held since 2022.

MONTREAL, May 17 — Canadian public health officials said Saturday a “high risk” passenger who was aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius tested “presumptive positive” for the Andes hantavirus.

The patient was one of four Canadians aboard the hantavirus-stricken vessel, which set sail on April 1 from Argentina on a course across the Atlantic Ocean until the outbreak of the rare rodent-carried disease.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement that officials from the western province of British Columbia “reported that one of the four high risk individuals who was self-isolating and being monitored for symptoms has tested presumptive positive for Andes hantavirus.”

The Andes strain of hantavirus is the only one known to spread between people.

Globally, the death toll remains at three.

The patient and their spouse, who reported minor symptoms, were transported to a hospital on Friday, where they will remain in isolation, officials said.

“Out of an abundance of caution, a third individual who was in secure lodging for isolation has been transferred to hospital for assessment and testing,” the statement said.

Results of tests to confirm hantavirus infection were expected in the next couple of days.

“The overall risk to the general population in Canada from the Andes hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship remains low at this time,” the public health agency stressed.

No vaccines or specific treatments for hantavirus exist, but health officials have dismissed comparisons to the Covid-19 pandemic. — AFP

LONDON, May 17 — Wes Streeting, who resigned as UK health secretary this week, announced Saturday he will run to replace Keir Starmer as Labour leader and prime minister, after the party suffered disastrous local election results.

Streeting quit the government Thursday with a withering assessment of Starmer’s leadership, but no other senior minister followed suit and the 43-year-old MP did not immediately trigger a leadership contest.

Later that day, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham unveiled a bid to become an MP which, if successful, would allow the 56-year-old from the left of the party to stand in that contest.

While still not announcing he has kickstarted the formal leadership challenge process, Streeting confirmed Saturday he will vie to replace Starmer and become the centre-left Labour’s new leader.

Whoever leads the ruling party, which has a big majority in Britain’s parliament, will by default become prime minister.

“We need a proper contest with the best candidates on the field, and I’ll be standing,” Streeting said in a speech and question-and-answer session at a think tank event in London.

Explaining the lack of a formal contest launch, Streeting – from Labour’s right-wing and long thought to covet the premiership – said he wanted “all of the candidates... on the pitch”.

“If we had rushed ahead without giving Andy a chance to stand, the new leader, whether it was me or anyone else, would lack the legitimacy.”

A Labour party leadership contest can be triggered if 81 of its MPs – 20 per cent of the party in parliament – formally back a candidate to challenge Starmer and submit the necessary paperwork.

Brexit ‘mistake’

Starmer, as current leader, would automatically be on the ballot if he wants to defend the challenge.

Labour members and affiliates then get to vote, not just MPs. They rank candidates in order of preference and a contender needs 50 per cent to win.

Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) – which selects the party’s candidates in parliamentary seat elections – said Friday it had permitted Burnham “to stand in the candidate selection process” in the by-election in Makerfield, northwest England.

That contest is expected in mid-June at the earliest, meaning any formal leadership challenge is likely to be triggered afterwards.

The political jockeying follows dismal results for Labour in local and regional elections held last week, which have prompted several junior ministers and dozens of the party’s MPs to demand Starmer to step down.

But the beleaguered 63-year UK leader appears to have been granted a stay of execution, of sorts, while Burnham’s fate is decided in the Makerfield by-election.

Burnham told British media Saturday he was prepared to “fight to the highest level”.

Meanwhile it appears Streeting, who delivered a wide-ranging speech at the think tank event, has kicked off a leadership campaign in all but name.

Setting out a fledgling policy platform, he said Brexit was “a catastrophic mistake” and that Britain must pursue a “new special relationship” with the European Union.

He signalled he wanted to see the country rejoin the trade bloc in the future. — AFP
