WHAT did Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir actually do that led to UMNO bringing anarchy to Negeri Sembilan (N9) in trying to remove him as the ruler of the state?

For 18 years, he has been the N9 Yang di-Pertuan Besar and nobody has heard a whiff of a scandal about him.

He doesn’t beat up caddies with golf clubs; his children don’t go around beating people or shouting about how great and rich they are; the palace in Seri Menanti is not turned into a casino for his birthday; neither he nor his family are seen partying with the Tatler crowd.

No, he has been as proper a constitutional monarch as could be.

So these chieftains who started this move to oust him on April 19 say he has committed grave offences according to their 200-year-old adat (customs). What offences?

Mereka berhujah bahawa kuasa memilih serta menurunkan Yang di-Pertuan Besar merupakan hak Undang Yang Empat berdasarkan Perkara 7, 10 dan 11 Undang Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Negeri Sembilan 1959.

Mereka turut menegaskan bahawa Menteri Besar dan Exco hanya bertanggungjawab melaksanakan keputusan tersebut.

Until today, they have not defined these offences and neither have they followed due process.

Egged on by a political courtesan who poses as an expert on this adat and who has betrayed every political leader who helped him, these chieftains – most of whom would never have succeeded in a competitive arena nor have been able to hold court intellectually even at the district level – brazenly committed treason as defined by this same adat they claim to uphold.

Now, here comes the question that people ask about this unprecedented move in Malaysian history: why are these people so emboldened?

Unpopular hard anti-graft stance

Who is providing them with air cover?

Is it Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar whose father was ruler of N9 for 41 years before Tuanku Muhriz? This is the man so desperately pushing himself and being pushed by these chieftains to replace Tuanku Muhriz. Very unlikely. He doesn’t have that gravitas nor conviction or guts.

Is it Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the UMNO president and the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) who is disloyal to his boss and PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim? Not likely either because wily as he is, there are limits to his intellect and certainly, he lacks the integrity to provide that kind of protection.

Or was it PMX himself who has allowed the situation in N9 to deteriorate to what it is today by his indecisiveness, his political dishonesty and his activity? No. Definitely not.

Because the Anwar I know, the Anwar I have seen over more than four decades, is driven by politics and will only do what is advantageous to him. Anarchy and instability in N9 are not to his advantage.

So what did Tuanku Muhriz actually do to get someone so powerful that the chieftains, Tunku Nadzaruddin and Tan Sri Rais Yatim feel they are untouchable?

Why haven’t the police questioned anyone for sedition or treason?

Why haven’t they recorded a statement from that poor excuse for a man, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ismail Lassim, who betrayed his sovereign exactly one day after pledging loyalty to him, swearing upon a Quran and who has changed his version of events multiple times in the last three weeks? This easily frightened, weak, cowardly man who is leading N9 for UMNO.

One thing I do know, though. When the Conference of Rulers was discussing the appointment of the Chief Justice to replace the highly respected Tun Maimun Tuan Mat, there were suggestions that newly appointed Federal Court judge Tan Sri Ahmad Terriruddin Mohd Salleh be given the job.

Tuanku Muhriz who was very vocal in his opposition to this stated that the appointment should be decided by the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) whose job was to select suitably qualified persons who merit appointment as judges of the superior court for the PM’s consideration.

As far as he was concerned, it was not for the rulers to decide. Hence, through the process, Tun Wan Farid Wan Salleh was chosen and subsequently appointed as Chief Justice.

Subsequently, when there was a lot of chatter last year about granting a pardon or partial pardon to convicted former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Tuanku Muhriz was again very vocal against it.

In his birthday speech in January this year, he voiced deep concern over the growing prevalence of corruption in Malaysia and expressed disappointment at those who continue to support individuals convicted of graft.

He warned that corruption is the foremost enemy of justice, trust and the nation’s future.

The ruler expressed shocked and was disheartened that some people still rally behind individuals found guilty of serious corruption offences as if such acts were acceptable or forgivable.

“Such attitudes reflect not only a failure to grasp the destructive impact of corruption on institutional integrity and society’s moral foundations but also call for serious reflection on one’s faith, principles, and values.”

Tuanku Muhriz’s stance on these issues was not popular – especially with UMNO – which had been in the forefront pushing for Najib’s release.

And, perhaps unwittingly, Tuanku Muhriz may have ruffled a couple of other feathers – more powerful than him – with his vociferous expressions on such issues.

There was no mistaking who he was referring to in his speech. It was the former premier.

I have no doubts that if Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the PM, things would never have been allowed to get so bad. Likewise with his successor, the late Tun Abdullah Badawi – gentle, soft but diplomatic in solving problems.

Those, my dear Datuk Seri Ismail Lassim, were men of honour. Not you, not your leaders of today.

So here we are today – on the cusp of a total breakdown in law and order – with politicians and chieftains of boisterous bluster running wild, with neither care nor fear for all the rules and laws they break.

THE national flag police may need to get off their virtue-carriage now because another flag-related blunder appears to have landed, and this time, right in their backyard.

The offender is not a newspaper, a factory or some random business. It was a vehicle believed to be used by the Chief Minister of Malacca, Ab Rauf Yusoh.

According to several posts carrying the news, the chief minister was illustrated beside the Malacca flag, which strangely features a star with 10 points.

Since UMNO has in the past enjoyed a lot of political mileage by pointing out flag-related blunders done by others, netizens very gleefully viralled this mistake.

Naturally, Malaysians have taken to cyberspace to ask the obvious question: where is Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh?

Netizen mhd.arff__ on threads said everyone should tag him so he could correct the mistake.

Surely this is exactly the sort of thing that would normally summon the fiery UMNO Youth Chief from wherever he happens to be.

But aaronalangx thinks the man might be a little slow to respond.

On Facebook, Faiz Huzaini joked that the vehicle has to make two turns around Malacca, hence the 10 points on the flag, and not five.

Many others could be seen hollering for Akmal to come out and condemn his own people for the mistake.

Malaysians did not forget that in August 2025, he demanded action over a Jalur Gemilang that had been displayed upside down and even threatened to personally conduct a lesson on how to hang the flag properly if action was not taken.

Of course, mistakes happen. Flags can be printed incorrectly, stitched wrongly or reproduced inaccurately.

The sensible response would be to correct the mistake instead of making a press conference to gain browny points.

Perhaps Akmal could now demonstrate that his love for the flag comes without a party membership filter.

Now all that remains is for him to find his megaphone, climb down from the virtue-carriage and tell his own side that flags, like principles, should probably be applied consistently.—Sept 23, 2026

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim strongly objected to the actions of the Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar and former State Executive Council members—who allegedly questioned the position of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir—describing the move as rude and uncivilised.

He stated that while the Federal Government does not interfere in the affairs of the Malay Rulers, it bears the responsibility of ensuring national security and the integrity of institutions, and seeing that all actions regarding state governance are carried out in accordance with the Constitution and established regulations.

“What I find most unreasonable is that the Menteri Besar and the former State Executive Council (Exco) are the ones making the decision. This is an insolent and uncivilised move, and I strongly object to it.

“Since when did they have the mandate to question the position of the Ruler?” he told the media while travelling to Hangzhou on a high-speed rail (HSR) service from Shanghai.

According to RTM, Anwar noted that the situation would be different if the Undang Luak or relevant parties were to present their views or use appropriate channels based on valid grounds and legal provisions.

He said that any decision made must go through the proper process and possess a valid legal basis.

The Prime Minister also emphasised that the position of the Rulers cannot be challenged or altered through decisions made by the Menteri Besar and the State Exco.

“The institution of the Malay Rulers is meant to be upheld, not dismantled. If this precedent is set—where a Menteri Besar and Exco can simply make such decisions—where did they learn this from?” he asked.

Anwar stated that the Federal Government must also adhere to the principle that the Prime Minister, as the nation's Chief Executive, remains bound by the Constitution and cannot interfere in the affairs of the Rulers.

He emphasised that while the Prime Minister may submit certain matters for the Conference of Rulers' consideration, the decisions made by that institution cannot be influenced by the government.

“The Prime Minister does not influence the decisions made by the Conference of Rulers,” he stated.

Anwar stated that the same principle applies to the situation in Negeri Sembilan, including the need to respect the jurisdiction and processes established by the Constitution.

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asked Transport Minister Anthony Loke to reconsider his decision to offer his resignation following the decision allowing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

According to the New Straits Times, Anwar said he would speak to Loke further before asking him to withdraw the resignation offer.

He also defended DAP against calls for the party to leave the unity government, saying it should not be pressured by those seeking to exploit the issue for political purposes.

“Why Anthony Loke? Why should DAP leave? Who is suggesting that? Why should he leave? He did nothing wrong.

“He did not propose the pardon decision. In fact, he tried his best to oppose it,” Anwar was quoted as saying.

Anwar was responding to calls for Loke to step down and for DAP to pull out of the government following the Federal Territories Pardons Board’s decision on Najib.

He said such pressure could weaken the unity government and create further political instability.

Anwar said he understood Loke’s position, particularly given DAP’s longstanding opposition to corruption and kleptocracy.

“I gave him space and did not want to rush things because I respect his decision. He is not opposing my decision or the Madani government or cooperation within the unity government,” he said.

Loke, Anwar said, faced a difficult position in defending the decision because DAP and Pakatan Harapan had maintained a firm stance on the issue from the beginning.

He also said the matter, including differing views surrounding the decision, had been conveyed to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, including the position taken by Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar during the Pardons Board meeting.

Anwar said the executive was nevertheless bound by the Federal Constitution, with the final decision on pardons resting with the King.

He also dismissed claims of a compromise or secret deal between him and UMNO leaders over the issue.

For now, Anwar said the government would remain focused on political stability, its relationship with the Malay Rulers and economic growth.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said Negeri Sembilan state secretary Datuk Mohd Zafir Ibrahim and state legal adviser Datuk Muzalmah Mustapha Kamal must continue carrying out their duties because their suspension by Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim is invalid.

He said both officers cannot be barred from entering their offices, as preventing them from working would be unlawful, according to the New Straits Times.


Dusuki said, “The duties of Mohd Zafir as Negeri Sembilan state secretary and Muzalmah as state legal adviser must continue as usual, and they must also remain in Negeri Sembilan.”

He added that the menteri besar’s order to suspend them “is invalid and can simply be disregarded.”


The Attorney General’s Chambers said last night that the Negeri Sembilan state executive council has no legal authority to suspend either officer, as appointments and suspensions fall under the Public Service Commission and the Judicial and Legal Service Commission.


The chambers also said any new appointment of a state legal adviser must comply with Article 37 of the Laws of the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan 1959 and be made by the Judicial and Legal Service Commission from among its members.

Ismail had earlier said the state executive council unanimously decided at a special meeting to suspend Mohd Zafir and Muzalmah with immediate effect.


Dusuki said the situation in Negeri Sembilan mirrors the 2009 Perak crisis, when the state secretary and state legal adviser were also suspended.

He said that in 2009, then Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Sidek Hassan and the Attorney General’s Chambers decided that the Perak menteri besar did not have the power to suspend the two senior officers.

He said the Perak state secretary and legal adviser were subsequently instructed to continue performing their duties as usual.

Umno induk tidak boleh lepas tangan and walk away from Negeri Sembilan.

Bolehkah Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan Ismail Lasim dilihat telah mengambil langkah direct confrontation terhadap rajanya yakni Yang Dipertuan Besar?

Jika boleh, maknanya krisis Negeri Sembilan yang sudah berlarutan menuju tahap lebih serius, lebih rumit, lebih parah. Mungkin sudah pun begitu keadaannya.

Tetapi adakah Ismail memang telah ambil langkah ‘pertentangan terbuka’ terhadap Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir in the first place? It certainly looks so.

Imbau apa yang berlaku sehari dua ini. Pada Ahad 20 Sept lalu kenyataan dikeluarkan Pengelola Bijaya Diraja Istana Negeri Sembilan Azizi Mohamad Ali memaklumkan Yang Dipertuan Besar membatalkan pelantikan Ahli-ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri (exco) berkuat kuasa serta-merta.

Pada Isnin 21 Sept, menteri besar pula keluarkan kenyataan memberitahu “semua exco kerajaan Negeri Sembilan sedia ada adalah sah dan akan menjalankan tugas masing-masing seperti biasa”.

Kenyataan menteri besar sekali gus menolak apa yang telah dilaksanakan oleh Yang Dipertuan Besar. Bak kata tajuk laporan Malaysiakini “N Sembilan MB rejects Tuanku Muhriz’s firing of excos”.

Menurut Pengelola Bijaya Diraja Istana, keputusan Yang Dipertuan Besar dibuat setelah mendapati semua 10 exco terbabit memungkir sumpah jawatan. Umum tahu mereka mengangkat sumpah dan menandatangani ikrar taat setia pada 7 Ogos lalu sebelum dilantik sebagai exco. Namun umum juga tahu pada 15 Sept mereka membuat keputusan kolektif bahawa proklamasi penurunan takhta Tuanku Muhriz sebagai Yang Dipertuan Besar adalah sah.

Ahli exco juga mengiktiraf Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Jaafar sebagai Yang Dipertuan Besar yang baharu berkuat kuasa serta-merta. Dengan berbuat demikian pihak istana melihat mereka memungkiri sumpah setia.

Menteri besar menyifatkan tindakan melucutkan jawatan barisan exco ‘tidak berperlembagaan’. Pihak istana pula menyatakan tindakan berlandaskan Undang-undang Tubuh Kerajaan Negeri Sembilan yang ada memperuntukkan seseorang ahli MMKN memegang jawatan selagi diperkenan Yang Dipertuan Besar.

Apa pun, jujur saya katakan apabila Tuanku Muhriz membatalkan pelantikan barisan exco negeri, anggapan saya ialah Yang Dipertuan Besar akhirnya telah stamped his foot setelah sekian lama berdiam diri. Menerusi tindakan itu, Yang Dipertuan Besar memberitahu semua pihak yang mengganggu-gugat pemerintahan dan memaksanya turun takhta bahawa enough is enough.

Dengan itu, pada hemat saya (sebenarnya harapan saya) krisis Negeri Sembilan akan ditamatkan.

Perlu dinyatakan juga kebelakangan ini pendirian menteri besar yang berubah-ubah tidak membantu menyelesaikan masalah, malah merumitkan. Tidak perlulah saya huraikan flip-flop yang dilakukan atas dua sebab. Satu, ramai sudah tahu. Dua, ceritanya panjang dan akan buat artikel berjela-jela.

Bagaimanapun, perlu dinyatakan selain institusi adat, Umno yakni parti menteri besar juga pemain utama krisis ini.

Ingat 27 April lalu? Hari itu Umno Negeri Sembilan menarik balik sokongan terhadap Aminuddin Harun sebagai menteri besar sambil mendakwa tidak puas hati terhadap cara beliau mengendalikan pertikaian para undang dan pemerintah. Kemelut undang tercetus tahun sebelumnya.

Adun Umno merancang bentuk kerajaan negeri yang baharu dengan sokongan PAS-Perikatan Nasional ala tebuk atap. Namun Tuanku Muhriz dilapor enggan menerima menghadap Umno.

Sebaliknya, Aminuddin ditugaskan oleh pemerintah untuk mengetuai kerajaan minoriti. Memendekkan cerita yang panjang beliau terpaksa juga bubar DUN dengan perkenan Tuanku Muhriz untuk memberi laluan pilihan raya negeri diadakan.

Umno bekerjasama dengan PAS. Naratif mereka: kerajaan pimpinan Aminuddin gagal menangani krisis istana dan tidak boleh diharapkan untuk mempertahan institusi raja. Juga dimainkan ialah politik identiti. Umno menang pilihan raya yang diadakan 1 Ogos lalu lantas bentuk kerajaan.

Pada 17 Sept lalu bekas ahli Majlis Kerja Tertinggi Umno Puad Zarkashi dipetik portal The Vibes mengutarakan pertanyaan sama ada Umno Negeri Sembilan sedang dilanda internal split berikutan kontroversi berhubung proklamasi berkaitan kedudukan Yang Dipertuan Besar.

“Adakah benar wujud dua puak dalam Umno Negeri Sembilan?” tanya Puad. Beliau tidak menyebut nama sesiapa. Bagi saya mungkin beliau merujuk desas-desus bahawa Umno Negeri Sembilan sebenarnya mahu Jalaluddin Alias sebagai menteri besar, dan bukannya Ismail. Jalaluddin ialah watak utama dalam gerakan tarik sokongan terhadap Aminuddin.

Puad juga dipetik berkata, perkembangan krisis Negeri Sembilan memalukan Umno kerana pengundi telah memberi mandat kuat untuk mendirikan sebuah kerajaan yang stabil.

Oleh itu saya terkejut apabila Presiden Umno Zahid Hamidi dipetik Malaysiakini 9 Sept lalu berkata, “sebaik mungkin kita tidak akan mengotorkan tangan untuk menyantuni situasi di Negeri Sembilan”.

Saya ulangi gerakan yang akhirnya memaksa PRN diadakan dicetuskan Umno Negeri Sembilan. Tidak pasti sama ada Umno induk merestui tindakan itu tetapi Umno Negeri Sembilan sebahagian Umno. Masalah Umno Negeri Sembilan ialah masalah Umno induk juga.

Apa lagi dalam kalangan 14 Adun Umno Negeri Sembilan yang tarik sokongan terhadap Aminuddin dulu ialah Mohamad Hasan, timbalan Zahid sendiri. Gadang dalam parti.

Diakui Zahid ada mengadakan pertemuan dengan Ismail semasa Perhimpunan Agung Umno berlangsung tempoh hari. Pasti bincang mengenai krisis dan perkembangan di Negeri Sembilan. Tidak tahu apa hasilnya dan apa perancangannya.

Apa pun yang jelas ialah Umno induk, like it or not, kena ‘kotorkan tangan’ terutama setelah pelantikan exco dilucutkan tetapi tidak diterima menteri besar. Ia tidak boleh lepas tangan and walk away from Negeri Sembilan begitu sahaja.
