PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has come under public scrutiny following his absence from the opening of the 2026 Parliament session on January 19, 2026, an event officiated by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim. The criticism emerged after Hadi circulated a lengthy statement outlining his party’s ideological commitment to Islam, reigniting debate over priorities and parliamentary responsibility.

In his statement released on January 21, 2026, Hadi reiterated that the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) positions itself as a movement that seeks to elevate Islam as a governing framework rather than using religion for political gain. He explained that PAS views Islamic politics as inseparable from the broader concept of al-din, which encompasses faith, Islamic law, and moral values. According to him, the party’s struggle is rooted in sacrifice and adherence to Islamic principles, not opportunism.

Hadi further highlighted that PAS’s constitution places Islamic law at the highest level and does not allow compromise on this principle. He contrasted this with other political parties, arguing that PAS stands apart in explicitly embedding Islam as the foundation of its political struggle. He maintained that the party’s pursuit of political power is aimed at establishing Islam as a guiding authority in governance, a stance he claimed has made PAS a target of groups opposed to Islamic influence in politics.

Expanding on this position, Hadi pointed to provisions within the party’s constitution that mandate the elevation of Islam at both state and federal levels. He noted that PAS has repeatedly submitted private motions in Parliament to amend the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution, which currently limits state powers in fully implementing Sharia law. In his view, these efforts reflect PAS’s long-term objective to strengthen the role of Islamic governance within Malaysia’s constitutional framework.

However, the timing of Hadi’s ideological message drew criticism due to his absence from the formal opening of Parliament earlier in the week. Members of the public questioned why a senior lawmaker would miss a key parliamentary ceremony while simultaneously emphasising leadership, duty, and religious responsibility. The criticism centred on the expectation that elected representatives should prioritise attendance and participation in Parliament as a basic obligation to voters.

The episode has once again placed Hadi and PAS at the centre of a broader discussion on the balance between political ideology and parliamentary accountability, highlighting how public expectations increasingly extend beyond rhetoric to visible commitment within Malaysia’s democratic institutions.

The truth is, as I suspect, he has no (zilch, zero, kosong) respect for Parliament - unless and until PARLIAMENT itself is Islamized.

Rightist Akmal mocked for silence over “ummah scammer” Tan Sri who swindles Muslims RM300m

SUCH was the contention of UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh’s detractors following the detention of Islamic banking figure Tan Sri Dr Mohd Daud Bakar by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption (MACC) for allegedly defrauding investors of RM300 mil in a ‘high return’ scheme.

The graft buster has reportedly obtained a four-day remand order from the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court to further probe the 61-year-old Kedah Darul Aman FC owner over having misappropriated the funds which should have been rightly returned after maturity of the agreement date two years ago.

This follows a post by news site The Malaysian Online (@TheMsianOnline) on X that the Amanie Group founder and executive chairman who also boasts chairmanship of the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Shariah Advisory Council (SAC) has been detained and subsequently remanded.

“Where is @drakmalsaleh? Isn’t this against the YDPA’s (Yang di-Pertuan Agong) decree on the issue of national sovereignty, race and religion?” a commenter cheekily called out the name of the self-proclaimed defender of race and religion. “Where are your followers? Why are you muted?”

Another was quite vulgar in calling out the name of the firebrand Merlinau state assemblyman who recently stepped down as the Melaka state EXCO so he can engage in “an all-out battle against DAP”.

One commenter simply highlighted an apparent publicity poster dated Jan 8, 2023 of Daud – then in his capacity as the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) chairman – who was scheduled to appear on TV AlHijrah to address the subject of “Zakat Penyelamat Umat (Tithe as Saviour of Muslims).

One Muslim commenter lamented “why this so-called TOP people fail to appreciate the rezeki (sustenance) bestowed by Allah” while another described the revelation as a “shame when one prioritises worldly gains”.

One commenter turned to @grok – the AI (artificial intelligence)-powered chatbot of Elon Musk – to seek the background of the Tan Sri in question with the outcome being very convincing to say the least

Another sought @grok’s help to enlighten him about this case for he was curious “what is the scam all about”.

At the end of the day, one commenter who claimed not to be pro-Madani government acknowledged that “I can now see clearly why many people don’t like the PM and YDPA right now for many have been hauled up (for corruption and frauds)”. – Jan 24, 2026

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Jan 24 — Penang aims to install 5,000 CCTVs throughout the state, including 1,000 in Seberang Perai, by October for security purposes.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the approach is in line with the use of smart technology such as Internet of Things (IoT), big data and artificial intelligence (AI) to create an urban environment that is safer and responsive.

“In line with the approach, the setting up of Seberang Perai ASPIRE Centre (SPACE) as an Seberang Perai City Council integrated operations centre will improve smart city management via data integration, smart complaints system, traffic monitoring, public safety and real-time city services management and boost service quality to all in Seberang Perai,” he said during the officiation of SPACE today by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the presence of Seberang Perai mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid and the state executive council.

At today’s event, Baderul Amin said that SPACE will function as the main platform to coordinate city operations systematically, and that efforts had started in 2014 with the setting up of a MBSP CCTV control room and grew alongside the needs of the population.

“Through SPACE, city data management can be conducted in an integrated manner in one control centre and will support monitoring and enforcement such as violation of parking spaces, illegal waste dumping and controlling movement of heavy vehicles, as well as contributing to public safety through real-time monitoring,” he said, adding that SPACE would provide information support to security agencies to boost crime enforcement and prevention.

In terms of technology and infrastructure, SPACE uses fire optic networks as the system backbone and is equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) or License Plate Recognition (LPR) to monitor vehicle movement and so far, 11 hotspots have been identified and are monitored under the MBSP city control system, he added. — Bernama

Snub Of The Century — Trump’s Greenland Debacle Proves France’s Gaullist ‘Third Way’ Was Right All Along: OPED

By Sumit Ahlawat
-January 23, 2026

“You can’t wake a person who is pretending to be asleep,” is a famous Native American saying.

It highlights that people often refuse to see uncomfortable truths until a big shock makes pretense impossible.

US President Donald Trump’s stance on the Ukraine War, his arm-twisting of European countries and Kyiv to accept an unfair peace deal, and his threats to invade Greenland and impose punitive tariffs on any country opposing his unhinged neo-imperialism have served as that necessary shock for Europe, forcing it from its collective slumber that lasted nearly eight decades.

It has forced European countries to realize they cannot rely on the US for their security or to protect their strategic interests. Far from it, the last year has forced Europe to see that there might be a situation where the US itself is hell-bent on invading and occupying a part of a European country.

From Germany to Italy, and from Denmark to the UK, all states known for their compliance with the US are openly rebelling against the US, telling Washington that any unilateral move on Greenland will put NATO and the historical trans-Atlantic alliance in jeopardy.

However, as European countries wake up to this new reality, France has been telling them, “I told you so” for a long time.

Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump at the White House,

Unlike much of Europe, France has pursued an independent defense and foreign policy, often called “Gaullism,” since the 1950s.

When most of Europe believed there were only two poles, the US and the Soviet Union, and for security and survival, one must submit to one of the two, France championed what it called the “third way”.

Paris realized long ago that it cannot rely on the US to protect European strategic interests or provide it with security.

It also feared that not having an independent foreign policy could mean France being pulled into conflicts not of its making or of any strategic value to France, as happened during the Iraq War (2003), when Paris was able to chart an independent policy, but countries like the UK, Denmark, Spain, and Portugal got sucked into the conflict.

Though the policy initially entailed huge costs for France, in the long run, it paid off well.

Today, France has its own independent nuclear strike force (Force de Frappe), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, an independent and hugely successful fighter jet program (Rafale), one of the best air-to-air missiles (Meteor), and a robust domestic defense industry.

As Europe comes to terms with an aggressive Russia and a reluctant US, France, arguably the strongest military power in Europe, is well-positioned to lead the continent in its drive towards self-reliance in defense.

However, an independent French foreign and defense policy was no accident. It was a well-calibrated move borne out of France’s historical experience, the two World Wars, and the trauma of occupation by Nazi Germany.
Second World War Trauma & The Roots Of Independent French Defense Policy

During the Second World War, Paris was occupied by Nazi forces.

German forces entered Paris on June 14, 1940. The fall of France in 1940 left many French feeling abandoned, especially after Dunkirk, where the British prioritized evacuating their own forces.

For the next four years and two months, Paris remained under brutal Nazi occupation.

As years passed, there was considerable frustration within the French resistance led by Charles de Gaulle that liberating France was not a priority for the Allied forces.

Both the Soviet Union and France exhorted the Allied forces, primarily the US and the UK, to open a ‘Second Front’ against Germany in Western Europe, but the Allies kept delaying.

The Allies focused on North Africa (1942), Italy (1943), and peripheral campaigns rather than a direct cross-Channel invasion until D-Day on June 6, 1944.

Gaulle and many in the Free French were particularly bitter about being excluded from planning D-Day and felt the Anglo-Americans treated France as a junior partner rather than an equal ally.

Even during the liberation campaign, the French were unhappy over heavy Allied bombing on French cities, often leveling historical cities and causing heavy civilian deaths.

Overall, the French realized during the German occupation that they could not rely on external forces for their survival and preservation and that external forces would always prioritize their own interests, even when those interests broadly overlapped.

In 1945, the Allies emerged victorious; both the UK and France were part of the Allied forces; however, they both came out of the war with widely different historical experiences.

The UK, thanks to its geographic distance from continental Europe and the swift US support, was able to maintain its freedom.

Whereas France, despite its final victory, realized its vulnerabilities and suffered considerable trauma, triggering deep introspection.

This influenced postwar French insistence on strategic independence and the need for a robust domestic defense industry.

French Sovereignty at Play – “Gaullism”

Charles de Gaulle, who led the Free French forces during the war, returned to power in 1958 as the founder of the Fifth Republic.

He viewed France as a “great power” with a civilizing mission. He rejected full subordination to US-led structures, seeing them as tools of American hegemony.

His philosophy centered on the conviction that “France cannot be France without greatness,” arguing that the nation must act as a sovereign global power to exist authentically.

In his memoirs, de Gaulle wrote:

“All my life, I have created for myself a certain idea of France…The affective part of my being naturally imagines France ordained for an eminent and exceptional destiny… The positive side of my nature convinces me, however, that France is not really herself unless she is in the front row, that only immense undertakings can validate the emotional ferments of her people, and that, given its nature, our country should, among the other countries, as they are, aim high and stand proudly – or it should disappear. I believe, in short, that without grandeur, France cannot be France.”

This vision compelled France to seek independent nuclear status, maintain a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, and project influence, ensuring it was not a subordinate partner to superpowers like the US.

When the world was divided into two power blocks, the US-led Western bloc and the Soviet Union-led Communist bloc, France decided to chart an independent foreign policy, called the ‘Third Way’.

In 1966, he withdrew France from NATO’s integrated military command (while remaining in the alliance’s political wing) and ordered US troops to leave French soil, arguing that NATO’s structure gave the US undue control over European security.

A cornerstone of this independent foreign policy was the development of Force de Frappe (nuclear strike force). France tested its first atomic bomb in 1960 and its first hydrogen bomb in 1968, refusing to join US-led nuclear sharing arrangements.

Gaulle doubted America would risk nuclear war for Europe and insisted on developing an independent nuclear deterrent.

Today, France maintains around 300 nuclear warheads, deployable via submarines, aircraft, and missiles, entirely under national control.

On the other hand, the UK relies heavily on US technology for its Trident submarine-launched missiles, which are leased and maintained with American support.

Thus, France can use its nuclear warheads unilaterally, without US approval.

French President Macron has also proposed to provide a nuclear umbrella to Europe to build deterrence against Russian nuclear weapons.

In 1964, France recognized the People’s Republic of China, becoming the first major Western power to establish formal ambassador-level diplomatic relations with the PRC, marking a significant shift in Cold War diplomacy.

The United States officially recognized the People’s Republic of China only in 1979, 15 years after France.

Because of this independent foreign policy, France was able to oppose the 2003 Iraq War, refusing to be drawn into conflicts that serve only US interests.

France has a robust domestic defense industry. Its frontline combat fighter jet, Rafale, is the most independent of US technology. Instead of relying on the F-35, France decided to invest in an independent fighter jet program.

French President Emmanuel Macron, with a Rafale jet in the background. Edited Image.

Though Europe produces three combat jets, Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Gripen, it’s the Rafale that is least dependent on US technology.

France also operates a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, making it the only country in the world apart from the US to operate one.

As Europe seeks to reduce its reliance on the US for defense, France is positioning itself as the most credible bet and is set to benefit from the EU’s ‘buy European’ drive in defense platforms.

“The facts may prove me wrong,” Charles de Gaulle said one day to his Finance Minister, Antoine Pinay, “but history will prove me right.”

In the 1960s, France’s ‘Third Way’ seemed callous, risky, and exorbitant to many; however, history has indeed proven France correct.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 — Selangor will not intervene in the lawsuit challenging the ban on keeping dogs in high‑rise residential units, Datuk Ng Suee Lim said today.

The State Local Government and Tourism executive councillor made the remarks following reports on the suit filed by former national hurdler and Olympian Noraseela Khalid against the Selangor government and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), according to a report by The Star.

“If they want to bring it to court, we will let the court handle it,” he said, adding, “We will respect the court’s decision.”

Ng said the state government will allow the legal process to proceed without interference.

Noraseela filed the suit at the Shah Alam High Court on January 19, arguing that MBPJ’s Licensing of Dogs and Kennel Establishments By‑Law 2007 conflicts with federal laws including the Local Government Act 1976 and the Strata Management Act.

The by‑law prohibits residents from keeping dogs in any unit above the ground floor of a high‑rise building.

Noraseela, who lives in a condominium in Petaling Jaya, is seeking to overturn the restriction and maintains that the council has no legal authority to impose a blanket ban.

She previously told Free Malaysia Today that the rule unfairly restricts pet owners and that there is no evidence showing dogs or other pets have caused disturbances in high‑rise housing.

PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional has taken an early lead in the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election, according to early unofficial results.

BN candidate Naim Kurniawan Moktar is said to have secured 4,815 votes, putting him well ahead of his two rivals – Warisan’s Saddi Abdul Rahman with 1,523 votes, and independent candidate Goldam Hamid with 349 votes.

Unofficial results show that BN is winning in eight polling districts – Abai, Bohangin, Inarad, Karamuak, Kuamut, Lamag, Litang and Masaum.

There are a total of 48,722 registered voters, comprising 48,526 ordinary voters, and 196 police personnel and their spouses who voted early, in the by-election.

As of 3pm, voter turnout was 50.37% for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and 55.16% for the Lamag state seat. All polling stations closed at 5.30pm.

A total of 36 polling centres with 117 polling streams opened simultaneously at 7.30am.

The by-elections were triggered by the death of the incumbent, Bung Moktar Radin, 66, in early December. Naim is Bung’s son.

The official results are expected to be announced by returning officer Eddy Syaizul Rizam Abdullah at 10pm at the earliest.

Scorpene submarines probe: Sangeet presses MACC for updates

Scorpene submarines probe: Sangeet presses MACC for updates

Published: Jan 23, 2026 3:40 PM
Updated: 6:54 PM

DAP Women's legal bureau head Sangeet Kaur Deo has pressed the MACC for a “clear and substantive” update on the status of the Scorpene submarines investigations, including whether the probe remains active and what steps have been taken since the identification of new leads.

In the wake of the graft scandal rocking the military, the lawyer said there has been renewed emphasis on confronting corruption within defence procurement.

“This has been reinforced by remarks from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that corruption within the military and other state institutions must be addressed,” she noted in a statement.

Against this backdrop, Sangeet highlighted that the procurement of the Scorpene submarines is a long-standing matter that warrants renewed attention, as it remains unresolved more than two decades after the transaction.

In 2024, MACC confirmed that its investigation into the 2002 Scorpene submarine purchase was still ongoing, and that the commission had identified new leads, including possible misappropriation of approximately RM42 million linked to payments under the Scorpene contract, with individuals to be summoned to assist in the probe.

She pointed out that since those public statements in 2024, there has been no further substantive public update on the status, progress, or direction of the Scorpene investigations.

Scrutiny beyond Malaysia

Sangeet said the Scorpene procurement has, over the years, attracted scrutiny beyond Malaysia, with foreign judicial authorities pursuing related corruption investigations arising from the same transaction.

Sangeet Kaur Deo

“Civil society organisations have repeatedly called for transparency and meaningful cooperation, citing the absence of clear outcomes despite repeated assurances that investigations remain ongoing.

“In fact, it is a matter of public record that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, prior to assuming office, had openly questioned the lack of domestic progress on the Scorpene investigations and called for accountability in relation to the transaction, particularly in light of actions taken by foreign authorities.

“Since assuming executive responsibility, however, there has been no public update on the government’s position on the status of the Scorpene investigations,” she added.

Sangeet said in the present climate, where corruption in defence procurement is acknowledged as a systemic concern, the government should provide clarification of its stand, consistent with the calls previously made.

Najib oversaw purchases

Former premier Najib Abdul Razak, when he was the defence minister, had overseen the purchases of the two submarines in 2002.

The submarines, named KD Tunku Abdul Rahman and KD Tun Razak, arrived in Malaysia in September 2009 and July 2010, respectively.

Najib Abdul Razak

However, the acquisition was mired in controversy both in Malaysia and France.

In April 2022, a French judge charged the defence firm Thales with complicity in bribery related to the sale of the submarines to Malaysia.

At the time, Thales said it “strongly contests” the charges.

Jakel, S'gor govt, 2 MPs and cheap prime land

COMMENT | It is curious that two PKR MPs have raised questions over 68.4ha of land allotted to the controversial Jakel group (yes, the one embroiled over the temple land in Kuala Lumpur) by Selangor, asking the state to buy back the land.

It is more curious still that state Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, a PKR leader, has not replied to repeated requests for answers to questions raised over the allocation and its chronology, which leads to suspicion rather than confidence.

The two MPs, Subang’s Wong Chen and Petaling Jaya’s Lee Chean Chung, urged the Selangor government to buy back the land it had previously sold to a private entity near the Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve in Kinrara, Puchong.

Companies linked to Jakel

According to searches they made, the private entity is Perano Properties Development Sdn Bhd, which is listed in Jakel’s corporate brochure as a company within its property development division.

Jakel, which started as a textile trading company, is now a diversified group with substantial property and other interests.

It is embroiled in a dispute over a piece of land in Kuala Lumpur, where a Hindu temple is present.

On Jan 15, it asked the temple to be vacated, with a RM1 million payment if done in time.

Back to the Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve issue, in their joint statement, Wong and Lee said that on Dec 16, the Subang Parliament office issued a letter to Amirudin for the chronological history and transactions over 68.4ha of land near the forest reserve, which is part of the Subang Parliament constituency.

It issued a reminder letter on Jan 6, but there was no reply.

Under-pricing state land

On the transactions, they identified about 56.3ha of land out of the reported 68.4ha. The identified transactions are the following: Lots PT 53649, 53654, 53660, 53916, 53917, 53924, and 83355.

The transactions for the first six lots totalling 0.3ha, occurred on Sept 21, 2012. The purchaser was Perano Properties.

These lands were sold then by the Selangor state secretary, at a total selling price of RM468,824.00, equivalent to RM13.80 per square foot.

“As for Lot PT 83355, measuring 56ha, the transaction occurred on Aug 5, 2019, almost seven years after the first sale, also to Perano Properties but the vendor was the Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), at a selling price of RM83,174,102.00, which is equivalent to RM13.80 per square foot,” Wong said.

Subang MP Wong Chen (left) and Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung

However, the duo did not ask this question - why was a piece of land sold seven years later still priced at RM13.80 per square foot?

Surely, land prices would have risen a lot, even if we account for the fact that the last sale was much larger at over 55.8ha compared to 0.3ha for the first five lots.

My own checks show that iProperty, a property website, listed that an acre of leasehold land in the Ayer Hitam area was sold for RM3.2 million in September 2022, giving a price of RM73 per square foot, over five times the RM13.80.

The larger tranche was being allocated at below market prices. The first deal done in 2012 may have been alright because it was done years back, at RM13.80 per sq ft for 0.3ha or a total price of just under RM470,000. The menteri besar then was the late Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

The transaction of concern was the second one in 2019, where the price paid was some RM83 million for 56ha, at the same price of RM13.80 per sq ft, seven years later.

There cannot be a justification for that. Amirudin was serving as menteri besar at the time.

Buyback will be good

The MPs said they were unable to find details over the remaining nearly 12.1ha, although they are guessing it is at the same price.

They are suggesting that the state repurchase all the 68.4ha at the original price plus an eight percent compounded rate of return. This would amount to around RM193 million, they added.

That would be a good arrangement to recover the money lost from the under-pricing of the land, provided it is possible to persuade the buyers to part with the land at that price.

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari

The question remains, however, of how the latest allocation in 2019 was made. How could the price seven years earlier in 2012 be the basis of a transaction seven years later?

This smacks of bad practice at best or corruption at worst, and deserves to be fully investigated.

But will it, like other incidents which require explanation and investigation, just fall by the wayside under this Madani government?

UK outrage over Trump remarks: PM Starmer says Trump's NATO comments are 'appalling

By News Agencies
Published On 23 Jan 202623 Jan 2026

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has suggested that Donald Trump should apologise for his claims that European troops were not on the front lines in the war in Afghanistan.

In a rare direct rebuke of the United States president, Starmer said on Friday that Trump’s earlier comments to US broadcaster Fox News that NATO allies stayed “a little off the front lines” in Afghanistan were “insulting and frankly appalling”.

Asked whether he would demand an apology from Trump, Starmer said, “If I had misspoken in that way or said those words, I would certainly apologise.”

Starmer also paid tribute to the 457 British personnel who died after joining the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 that followed the September 11 attacks on the US.

Later on Friday, the White House rejected the United Kingdom leader’s criticism of President Trump.

“President Trump is absolutely right – the United States of America has done more for NATO than any other country in the alliance has done combined,” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said in a statement sent to the AFP news agency.

Trump’s comments came after he withdrew a threat to impose tariffs on several European countries that opposed his demands that the US take over Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.

Speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump said on Thursday that he was not sure NATO would be there to support the US if and when requested, saying, “We’ve never needed them, we have never really asked anything of them.”

‘Mothers and fathers buried sons and daughters’

More than 150,000 UK armed forces personnel served in Afghanistan, making the country the second-largest contributor to the US-led coalition that sought to destroy al-Qaeda and the armed group’s Taliban hosts.

Alongside the US and UK forces were troops from dozens of countries, including from NATO, whose collective security clause, Article 5, had been triggered for the first time after the attacks on New York and Washington.

More than 150 Canadians were killed in Afghanistan, along with 90 French service personnel and dozens from Germany, Italy and other countries.

Denmark, which remains under pressure from Trump over Greenland, lost 44 soldiers.

The US reportedly lost more than 2,400 soldiers.

At least 46,319 Afghan civilians died as a direct result of the 2001 invasion, according to a 2021 estimate by Brown University’s Costs of War project.

The figure did not include indirect deaths caused by disease or lack of access to food, water and infrastructure.

Trump’s comments provoked collective outrage across Europe, where patience with the US president appeared to be wearing thin at the end of a week when his threats to annex Greenland reached a crescendo.

Transatlantic relations took a hit as the US president threatened to slap tariffs on European nations opposed to his ambitions to annex the territory, which raised questions over the future of NATO.

And though Trump appeared to back down after a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, in which they formed the “framework” for a deal over Arctic security, his comments about NATO troops in Afghanistan drew widespread criticism.

On Friday, Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel condemned Trump’s remarks, calling them untrue and disrespectful.

And Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said his country was “a reliable and proven ally, and nothing will change that”.

The UK’s Prince Harry weighed in, saying the “sacrifices” of British soldiers during the war “deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect”.

“Thousands of lives were changed forever,” said Harry, who undertook two tours of duty in Afghanistan in the British Army.

“Mothers and fathers buried sons and daughters,” he said. “Children were left without a parent. Families are left carrying the cost.”

A Perlis PAS assemblyperson has questioned the presence of three representatives whose party memberships were terminated at a meeting between the party’s spiritual adviser Hashim Jasin and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Describing it as a major issue, Beseri assemblyperson Haziq Asyraf Dun said the three assemblypersons were involved in disciplinary issues and “betrayal”.

“Why were former assemblypersons whose memberships have ceased present at a cordial meeting between Muhyiddin and Hashim?

“This is not a small matter. It touches on party discipline, trust and betrayal,” Haziq said in a social media post.

The post was accompanied by a photograph showing Muhyiddin posing with Hashim, Perlis Bersatu leaders, and the three assemblypersons - Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji).

Also seen was Perlis PAS ulama wing chief Ahmad Adnan Fadzil.

Muhyiddin’s visit came about a month after PAS central committee member Shukri Ramli stepped down as Perlis menteri besar. He was forced to resign after failing to secure the support of most state assemblypersons.

Shukri had faced eight statutory declarations (SDs) submitted by Perlis assemblypersons, three of which were signed by Saad, Fakhrul, and Ridzuan.

PAS subsequently terminated the memberships of the trio. The party viewed the incident, which resulted in a Bersatu assemblyperson becoming menteri besar, as an act of betrayal.

It also briefly strained ties between PAS and Bersatu, leading to calls for Muhyiddin to step down as Perikatan Nasional chairperson.

PAS later asserted that it would take over leadership of the coalition from Bersatu. However, Muhyiddin’s replacement has remained unclear so far.

Haziq, who is also Perlis PAS Youth chief, said he wondered whether the assemblypersons’ actions showed they had links to the meeting.

“Even more saddening is that someone who once came to see me and invited me to do ‘bad things’, trying to pull me into a path of betrayal against the party, was also in the same photo,” he said.

He added that he was “saddened” that what had happened suggested “betrayal is being given space”, causing confusion among PAS members who had long been taught about the importance of loyalty and discipline in the party.

Personal relationships

Ahmad Adnan told Malaysiakini that disputes, crises, or misunderstandings between parties do not affect the close ties among people in the state.

As such, he said, even though the assemblypersons had been subjected to disciplinary action, their personal relationships remained as usual.

Moreover, Ahmad Adnan said the three assemblypersons were not newcomers in PAS but had received good guidance from early on, including from Hashim, who is the PAS syura council mursyidul am (chief).

“When there is a feast or gathering, the mursyidul am will usually invite people, not because there is a discussion or anything, but because Muhyiddin came to meet the Perlis ruler and the menteri besar,” he said.

He added that Hashim is a highly respected figure and it was appropriate for him to be visited, including by Muhyiddin, who rarely visits Perlis.

“The PAS mursyidul am is also well known for his friendliness since long ago, and he usually invites everyone. I was invited too, that’s why I went.

“It was not an invitation in the name of the party, but because of my long-standing personal closeness with him,” he said.

‘Room for resolution’

Separately, Hashim told Malaysiakini there is still room for a resolution regarding the trio’s status, as all decisions made by Abdul Hadi are still subject to the syura council.

According to him, efforts to find a solution to the issue are underway and are expected to be finalised soon.

“As for the meeting the other day, what I can say is that efforts to find a solution regarding these three assemblypersons are being actively pursued.

“InsyaAllah, we are confident this can be resolved soon,” he said.

Elaborating on the proposed resolution discussed, Hashim explained that the three assemblypersons had submitted appeals to the PAS syura council.

“(We discussed a solution to the problem) between PAS central leadership and the three assemblypersons. They have appealed to the syura council and so on, and we will see - in next week’s meeting we will decide,” he said.

Asked about the PAS president’s reported decision to reject the appeals of the three assemblypersons, Hashim stressed that the final authority still lies with the council.

“The council still exists, so the president is still subject to it in this matter,” he said.

Hashim also clarified that meetings among the council’s top leadership do not require the president’s consent.
