Perikatan Nasional: ’Tis the time to be unjolly

Perikatan Nasional: ’Tis the time to be unjolly

JANUARY 1 — Happy New Year!

I initially wanted to spread the feelgood holiday cheer to everyone, as people laze over a long weekend to get ready for a great productive year ahead.

Maybe urge patriotic resolutions or direct people to a nearby animal shelter to hug a domesticated pet feeling unloved.

Buy hungover revellers coffee and impart common sense like, “Do not leave your date at the countdown party.”

That was until Malaysians were informed they would wake up in 2026 with the country’s main Opposition bloc leaderless.

All the fuss kicked off a week earlier: as a Christmas present, PAS sacks three Perlis assemblymen. Fair enough, since they backed Bersatu reps’ effort to dislodge Perlis MB Shukri Ramli.

To match the drama, Muhyiddin Yassin resigned as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman while holidaying in Madrid, effective today.

Who said the conservative “values first and last” PN did not know how to stir up some festive year-end excitement? Someone must have said PAS and Bersatu are boorish and boring towards the year end as the rest of us amble into a place of fun or two.

Perlis is the time, is the place, is the motion

It’s incredulous that this much trouble kicks off in an area filled with less than two-thirds the voters in Bangi.

Perlis, three parliamentary seats totalling less than 200,000 voters is what preoccupies a nation currently. Though it is the 15 assembly seats inside them which bring us to this FUBAR.

Big trouble in little Perlis.

Instead, it should be the picture of stability because 14 seats, or 93 per cent belong to the dark blue of PN. PKR’s Gan Ay Ling is Indera Kayangan’s rep, she is also the the only elected rep in Perlis not from PN.

She is incidentally the leader of the Perlis Opposition. She chats with herself in the house when she is unsure. It can get lonely.

Whatever they smoke in Kangar, it inspired the five Bersatu reps to talk three PAS reps to sign statutory declarations requesting a new menteri besar.

Like requisitioning new stationery, these SDs. They object to their own party’s anointed MB. PAS HQ was not impressed. Not impressed at all.

PAS President Hadi Awang summarily sacks Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji). Which also means the trio lose their assembly seats.

PAS doubles down. At first, Speaker Rus’sele Eizan announces the seats vacant and asked the Election Commission to hold elections.

But yesterday he said the three seats would remain vacant and there would be no by-elections as the state assembly is set to automatically dissolve in two years.

Rus’sele said the decision was made under Clause (5) of Article 55 of the Perlis State Consitution and communicated to the state Election Commission (EC) the day before, The Star reported.

That’s a lot to process for a nation on holiday evading mistletoes and eggnog to skip sin.

Yet, it is hit by “I Quit Day”.

If you leave me now, you take away I don’t know what

Bersatu President Muhyiddin picked up his passport from the courts on December 15, to head out to London, Madrid and Dubai.

A sojourn to get medical assistance and connect with family. Makes me less convinced he had anything to do with the Perlis shenanigans, and Larut is far closer to Kangar than Pagoh.

His judge expects Muhyiddin’s passport back to custodial care by January 5, 2026.

A tedious and frankly unwelcomed criminal corruption case denies him travel on other days of the year.

His travel schedule reads Madrid after Christmas, I’m guessing that’s where he was when Bersatu’s Abu Bakar Hamzah was sworn in as the new Perlis MB.

On a balcony overlooking the resplendent Spanish capital, a family member with the temerity to interject may have reminded him that in a year where nothing went right for Bersatu, the party got some power while he was out of the country.

Whether he got an internal jolt or was unamused by PAS leaders’ taunts that PN was better under them or just fed up, most observers are unable to decipher his December 30 quit decision, to vacate the PN chairmanship when 2026 begins.

But he’s not the last to quit.

In what appears a co-ordinated stratagem, one by one PN state chairs leave. Azmin Ali quits in Selangor, Faizal Azumu follows in Perak, as do Johor’s Sahruddin Jamal for Johor, Negeri Sembilan’s Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker and Sarawak’s Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Suffian.

The PN state chairs not to quit are from PAS or Melaka’s Mas Ermieyati Samsudin who is from Bersatu.

It leaves a lot to reconcile or enough reasons for PN to self-destruct in 2026.

What was a year to close ranks and prepare for a general election turns instead into an existentialist crisis.

Akmal wants to have a word

The Unity government of Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional prefer to be interested observers to PN’s implosion but they have a hothead inhouse in the form of Akmal Saleh.

The Umno Youth Chief talks up Muafakat Nasional, the stillborn cooperation between PAS and Umno after GE14 2018-2022, a few days before a youth congress to discuss what Malay supremacy should look like.

Whether he gets Umno stuck into this muck is what party president Zahid Hamidi will watch for without time for irony.

As it stands, it’s a thousand questions raised with answers as distant as economic growth in Perlis.

I’d venture to say, those in Perlis looking for inspiration may be better served by waking up today on the Thai side of Padang Besar.

More foot massages than foot in mouth syndrome dominating the scene.

It appears the Perikatan Nasional folks have started their countdown to New Year much earlier than the rest of the world, or even Kiribati. Look that one up, one place with less people than Perlis.

How Much Equipment Did the U.S. Deliver to the Republic of China Armed Forces in 2025?

Military Watch:

How Much Equipment Did the U.S. Deliver to the Republic of China Armed Forces in 2025?

Asia-Pacific , Ground

The United States in 2025 continued large scale deliveries of military equipment to modernise the inventories of the Republic of China Armed Forces, following a policy shift under the first Trump administration in 2019 to much more actively support military modernisation efforts. The status of the Republic of China government has left the U.S. as its only significant military supplier, with the government’s lack of international recognition or diplomatic relations with all but twelve minor countries leaving other arms producing countries unwilling to equip its forces. Although major delays to U.S. arms supplies have caused a major scandal in Taipei, with backlogs having exceeded $21 billion, the quantities of equipment delivered are nevertheless substantial.

Republic of China Army M1A2 Abrams Tank During Live Fire Drills
Republic of China Army M1A2 Abrams Tank During Live Fire Drills

The most significant procurement made in 2025 was that of M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks. After the first batch of 38 tanks were delivered in December 2024, a second batch of 42 tanks arrived in July 2025, allowing an armoured battalion to be formed equipped with the vehicles on October 31, 2025. This was assigned to the 3rd Combined Arms Battalion of the 584th Armoured Brigade, which is responsible for mobile counterattacks against landings by mainland Chinese forces, and for breakthroughs of possible encirclements. The Abrams’ high mobility as a result of its gas turbine engine makes it optimal for such roles, although its suitability for conditions on Taiwan Island remains in question, with its large, outstandingly high fuel requirements, and very limited ability to use local infrastructure being major limitations.

Harpoon Missile Launched From Mobile Launch Vehicle
Harpoon Missile Launched From Mobile Launch Vehicle

Alongside the M1A2, the only other major delivery made was of the first batch of RGM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II shore-based anti-ship missile systems, including five launch vehicles and one long-range search radar. Funding has been allocated to purchase 100 launchers and 400 RGM-84L-4 Block II missiles from the United States before 2031, although U.S. industry’s ability to deliver these on time has remained in question. The Harpoon has been in service for close to half a century since 1977, with even updated variants suffering from short ranges, subsonic speeds, and a lack of radar evading capabilities which make them relatively straightforward for modern air defence systems or fighters to intercept. A fleet of mobile launch vehicles and radar systems capable of supporting Harpoon missile launches remains at the core of the Republic of China Navy’s asymmetric anti-access area-denial strategy against the Chinese mainland.

ATACMS Ballistic Missiles and Launcher From HIMARS System
ATACMS Ballistic Missiles and Launcher From HIMARS System

By far the most controversial weapons systems supplied is the HIMARS rocket artillery system, the first 11 launchers from which were delivered in late 2024 and assigned to the 58th Artillery Command of the 10th Army Corps. The first live-fire exercise was conducted in southern Taiwan on May 12, 2025, and saw 33 rockets fired allowing the system to complete tactical verification. The formation of the first HIMARS rocket artillery company was held on July 4, 2025. A report by the Republic of China Ministry of National Defence tin November 2025 noted that the U.S. advanced the delivery date of the remaining 18 HIMARS from the originally scheduled 2027 to the fourth quarter of 2026. The system’s delivery has caused particular controversy due to its ability to deploy ATACMS ballistic missiles to strike targets far into the Chinese mainland, with a new arms sale approved in December expected to see 420 more of the missiles transferred to the Republic of China Armed Forces. The United States’ ballistic missile proliferation outside NATO has otherwise been limited.

Ceremony at Greenville For the Delivery of the First F-16 Block 70 to the Republic of China Air Force
Ceremony at Greenville For the Delivery of the First F-16 Block 70 to the Republic of China Air Force

While no HIMARS are known to have been delivered in 2025, delays to delivered of F-16 Block 70 fighters meant that only one fighter was handed over to the Republic of China Armed Forces in 2025, with a ceremony held in the United States in March to mark the occasion. The aircraft will be used for training, and will not reach Taiwan Island or enter service for the foreseeable future. With outstanding contracts stipulating that all 66 F-16 Block 70 fighters on order need to be delivered by the end of 2027, it remains in question whether even half this number will be delivered by that time. Responding to the delays, Premier Cho Jung-tai stated that Taipei did not rule out “taking legal action against the manufacturer,” but cautioned that the $8.2 billion contract to acquire F-16s was executed through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales process which provided no allowance for direct compensation claims.

Republic of China Air Force Mirage 2000 - These Obsolete French Fighters Will Remain in Service Until New F-16s Are Belatedly Delivered

The Republic of China government remains in a state of civli war with the internationally recognised People’s Republic of China government on the Chinese mainland, with both claiming to be the sole legitimate representatives of the Chinese nation. Equipping the Republic of China Armed Forces has thus provided a means for the United States to undermine the interests of the Chinese mainland, while also earning tens of billions of dollars in revenue for the American defence sector. With arms supplies to the Republic of China Armed Forces remaining limited, however, the balance of power in the Taiwan Strait has continued to rapidly shift to increasingly overwhelmingly favour the mainland. The Untied States has continued to deny Taipei permission to procure more advanced and sensitive military equipment such as F-35 fighter aircraft, both due to the political sensitivity of sales, and due to the significant risks that technologies will be passed on to the Chinese mainland either through defections or through espionage.

Why we must be concerned over the attack on Putin’s residence

Why we must be concerned over the attack on Putin’s residence

Jan 02, 2026

Just after the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was at Mar-a-Lagi talking about a peace with US President Donald Trump, elements within the Ukraine armed forces with assistance from British intelligence (not fully substantiated) launched a drone attack targeting Russian President Putin’s state residence in the Novgorod region on the night of December 28-29.

This drone attack on Putin’s residence involved 91 drones according to Russian media, which were all reported intercepted. Ukraine has strongly denied such claims, calling it a fabrication to undermine peace negotiations. However, its clear a third party most probably rogue elements within the Ukrainian military with some “European” collaborations are trying to sabotage any plans. RT claims the Russian authorities found a flight plan file in the drone wreckage to prove the origin of the attack.

Just a couple of days after the attempted attack on Putin’s residence, there was a deadly attack on the village of Khorly involving multiple drones killing at least 24 and injuring 50 people according to RT.

These aggressions pose critical threats to the sovereignty of Russia and call for conventional weapon retaliation.

This comes at a time when analysts believe that real substantive negotiations are now taking place between the US and Ukraine.

It is clear now that there is friction within the leadership and military inside Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky may not completely control what is ‘happening on the ground’. There is also the possibility that these are false flag attacks to provoke Russia to ‘take out’ command and control centres, including Zelensky in Ukraine.

This is all risking potential Russian retaliation against western Europe, if it can be proven there was direct involvement. Although the recent attacks in Russian have not crossed any Russian nuclear doctrine red lines, conventional retaliation is not out of the question. Russian hypersonic multi-warhead Oresknik missiles even with conventional warheads could cause much devastation and panic on any city targeted. Ukrainian attacks on Russia have potentially put the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in danger. To date Russia has mostly targeted infrastructure.

Much of the western media has amplified the narratives of some western leaders portraying Putin as a ‘madman’. French officials close to French President Emmanual Macron have described Putin’s pre-invasion speeches as paranoid, while the Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski repeatedly referred to a British saying that leaders ‘go mad’ after long periods in power. Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson exemplified the myth of Putin as ‘irrational’.

Its ironical, that the same man is the only person standing in between restraint and retaliating against western Europe. Its not Putin who is the ‘madman’, its those who are provoking his patience today.

There are leaders in western Europe that are intent on pushing the world towards war.

We must become very concerned about European aggression towards Russia today. They are playing Russian roulette.

Umno Youth to be a bridge between Umno and PAS, says Akmal

Umno Youth to be a bridge between Umno and PAS, says Akmal

The Umno Youth chief says the two parties must lead the way on Malay unity by reviving Muafakat Nasional, which Bersatu can join later

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Salleh speaking to the media after a special Umno Youth convention on whether Umno should continue to cooperate with PH.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth intends to become the bridge between Umno and PAS in a bid to revive Muafakat Nasional (MN), the electoral pact forged between the country’s two largest Malay parties in 2019.

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said Umno and PAS must work towards uniting the Malays through MN, which later fell apart when PAS and Bersatu formed Perikatan Nasional (PN).

“We have realised the mistake we made in the past. When the alliance between Umno and PAS fell apart, Malay unity almost did not materialise,” he said.

When Malays were split, there were those who would attempt to exploit the division, which in turn led to anxiety on the ground, he said.

“Which is why I propose that Umno and PAS must work towards uniting the Malays,” he told reporters after a special Umno Youth convention today.

When asked if Bersatu would be invited to join MN, Akmal said he had no issue with Muhyiddin Yassin’s party.

“But if we want to unite the Malays, these two parties (Umno and PAS) must join forces first,” he said. “And only then will we invite the rest. They are most welcome.”

kt note: Jangan lupa Pejuang juga 😂😂😂

Akmal’s push for cooperation with PAS comes in the wake of a call by PAS election director Sanusi Nor to revive MN ahead of the next general election.

Sanusi last week said ties between PAS and Umno were vital for political stability, especially at the grassroots level. His call echoed those of other PAS leaders who had repeatedly brought up the idea of reviving the pact.

MN was formed a little over six years ago with the intention of consolidating the Malay-Muslim vote when Umno and PAS were in the opposition bloc following Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the general election of May 2018.

The pact fell apart after PAS formed PN with Bersatu while insisting that Bersatu be included in MN, which Umno was against.

Don’t speak as though we control 222 Parliamentary seats: Anwar reminds PH

The Prime Minister emphasises that reforms must be implemented through consultation, not rushed pressure, reiterating his commitment to fighting corruption and abuse of power

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that any effort to implement reforms, championed since the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and PKR eras, cannot be rushed. Instead, it must involve discussions and consultations with other coalition parties in the Unity Government.

In response to calls from some PKR members for immediate and comprehensive reforms, the Prime Minister emphasised that change is necessary but must be approached with political wisdom, taking into account the position and priorities of each party.

“Sometimes we forget… PKR has 30 seats, PH has 82 seats, but we speak as though we control 222 Parliamentary seats,” he remarked.

“We must remember that change must occur, but it must be rational and wise. We must understand that we need to negotiate well and consult all party leaders,” he added.

Anwar acknowledged that the process would not be easy, as every party has its own agenda. However, he stressed that the leadership of the government must guide this process wisely.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to bringing about change and rejecting corruption, misconduct, and arrogance.

Anwar made these remarks during his speech at the Family Day and National Reformists’ Rally 2026 in Hulu Selangor today.

The Prime Minister admitted that his administration continues to face significant challenges in implementing reforms, particularly when racial issues are often used as political tools.

As both PH Chairman and PKR President, Anwar noted that each ethnic group – Malay, Chinese, Indian, and those from Sabah and Sarawak – may have their own issues, but they must all be viewed within the broader context of Malaysia.

“What is often feared… is that the Malays focus on issues related to the Chinese, some Chinese only think of Chinese schools, and some Indians think similarly. We need to see this from the broader Malaysian perspective,” he explained.

Anwar also criticised the opposition for vocally attacking the government over reforms, despite their failure to implement them when in power.

“When they had power, they did nothing. Now that they don’t have it, they complain every day. That is the challenge for those of us in power,” he said.

The Prime Minister reiterated his government’s firm commitment to rejecting corruption, abuse of power, and arrogance while defending the independence of the judiciary.

“Those familiar with corruption will never accept us kindly. Those who support the corrupt will be displeased with us. Those who infringe on the independence of the judiciary will not be happy with a free judiciary’s decisions,” he concluded. – January 3, 2026

CHEGUBARD FIRES FULL SPREAD TORPEDOS. ALL RUNNING HOT. MY ADVICE TO THE ARMY NAVY BOYS

Saturday, January 3, 2026

CHEGUBARD FIRES FULL SPREAD TORPEDOS. ALL RUNNING HOT. MY ADVICE TO THE ARMY NAVY BOYS.

In submariners lingo "firing a full spread" means  'using the maximum number of torpedo tubes available for an attack'.  Or firing both barrels of a double barrel shotgun at the same time.

All running hot means  'All the launched torpedoes are active, powered and homing in to the target'

Ok slight digression, to that newly appointed Navy fellow - can you get a proper haircut and a shave? Yo brader you look like a vagrant. Jaga standard lah sikit.

Chegubard has unloaded another MOAB (Mother Of All Bombs). You have to click the link to listen to him:   https://youtu.be/gzql9up7zuU?si=mAhS11Z9fa7KXd7O

How would we like to see Chegubard as the Minister of Home Affairs someday soon? I think if Chegubard becomes Minister of Home Affairs, all these clowns will crap in their pants. They will jump into the torpedo tubes and get shot out into the sea. Lets keep our fingers crossed and help in the process.

Here is some advice to the Army, Navy and Air Force boys. First of all I am so glad we are not in a war zone. Our country is peaceful and our neighborhood is relatively peaceful.

  • Indonesia is peaceful.
  • Singapore is peaceful.
  • The Philippines is largely peaceful except for some confused folks in the south.
  • Thailand is peaceful except for  some confused folks in the south.
  • That kerfuffle over that Hindu temple with Cambodia is a non issue.
  • The Thais are not going to claim Angkor Wat and neither will the Cambodians claim back Ayutthaya.
  • The only problem is Myanmar but that is an internal civil war.
  • Myanmar is at peace with its neighbours.

So lets be thankful we live in a peaceful neighborhood. Because I dont know how our military boys will perform if the country has to face hostilities.

Chegubard talks about a long established 'ecosystem' in the military. I will not repeat what he said. You have to listen to him yourself.  Chegubard also talks about the military boys playing golf.  Implying their existence is relaxed. Easy come easy go. Maybe they spend time polishing the paku on their shoulders and their shiny butang baju.

From what I have read, seen and heard so far these military boys are not well versed with handling adverse publicity. When the shit hits the fan, they dont know what to do. Yo brader, the solution is so simple "Jangan buat tahi lah. Apa susah nak faham?" Kalau you buat tahi, one day you will kena.

One fellow got admitted to the hospital - into the ICU.  The other fellow fumbled his own press conference. Chegubard has raised some pertinent questions about that fellow's press conference.

Chegubard on the other hand is a master at this game.
He knows how to handle the media superbly.
So I think a few more Army and Navy boys may be getting admitted into hospital.

Here is my advice to any of you who are dirty.

Step No. 1 stop whatever crap you are doing. Get out of the situation now.
Step No. 2 start cooperating now with the anti-corruption guys, etc. Confess your wrongs, spill the beans, full disclosure and return any money that came to you illegally.

This is the reality - the politicians cannot protect you anymore.
This is the season of 'Lets Kick Them Out'.
At every election since 2018  the politicians got kicked out.

2018 UMNO/BN got kicked out.
2022 ALL OF THEM got kicked out. Hung Parliament.
2023 Six State elections - the ruling coaltion got their butts kicked.
2025 Sabah State polls - the ruling coalition got their butts kicked.
2026/27 next general elections - they will get kicked out again.
The politicians will not and cannot protect you anymore.
Because they get KICKED OUT.

So if you are dirty, you will be exposed with your bontot catching the breeze on the South China Sea.

Remember this: This is the season of Lets Kick Them Out.

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari says 'wait for the coming of Muafakat Nasional 2.0'

(From left) PAS leaders Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, Shahidan Kassim and Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden have hailed the call by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh.

PETALING JAYA: Three PAS leaders have welcomed Dr Akmal Saleh’s call for Umno to work with the Islamic party to foster Malay unity.

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said: “Wait for the coming of Muafakat Nasional 2.0”, in reference to the political pact forged by Umno and PAS in 2019.

Shahidan Kassim, a PAS central committee member, said his party was prepared to work with Umno in MN. “Send my regards to (Ahmad) Zahid Hamidi,” the former Umno leader said, referring to the Umno president.

PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said the Muslims will be strong if they were not divided and that the agenda to unite the community must take priority.

“Let’s make it happen,” he said.

Akmal, the Umno Youth chief, said his party and PAS must work towards uniting the Malays through MN, which later fell apart when PAS and Bersatu formed Perikatan Nasional (PN).

His push for cooperation with PAS comes in the wake of a call by PAS election director Sanusi Nor to revive MN ahead of the next general election.

WASHINGTON, Jan 3 — Donald Trump returned to office vowing to be the peace president. Nearly a year later, he is embracing war on multiple fronts.

Trump today ordered large-scale military strikes in Venezuela and announced that leftist leader Nicolas Maduro had been captured and flown out of the country.

The raid to kick off the new year comes after the US military on Christmas Day hit Nigeria, in what Trump said was an operation targeting jihadists who had attacked Christians.

And hours before the attack in Venezuela, Trump warned of another US intervention in a third region, saying US forces were “locked and loaded” if Iran’s clerical state kills protesters who have taken to the streets.

The enthusiasm for war would seem at odds for a president who has loudly declared that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for supposedly ending eight wars, a claim that is highly disputable.

In his second inaugural address on January 20 last year, Trump said: “My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier.”

But soon after, Trump rebranded the Defence Department as the “Department of War.”

Both Trump and his aides insist that military muscle is the path to real peace.

“We’re making peace through strength. That’s what we’re doing,” Trump told a rally last month in Pennsylvania.

“Peace through strength” was famously a catchphrase of Ronald Reagan, as he promoted a massive military build-up at the end of the Cold War, and was attributed to the Roman emperor Hadrian who built up defences.

But the strategy was generally understood as a way to prevent war from beginning.

‘So-called nation-builders’

Making his love of force even more striking, Trump has not only described himself as a peacemaker but has spoken for years against US interventionism.

Declaring “America First,” he cast himself as a different kind of Republican than the party’s last president George W. Bush, whose administration he castigated as warmongers over the Iraq invasion of 2003.

In a speech in Riyadh in May, Trump said that “so-called nation-builders wrecked far more nations than they built” and failed to understand countries where they intervened.

In one key difference with Bush, Trump has made no pretense of long-term commitment.

He last year ordered the bombing of Iranian nuclear sites in support of an Israeli attack as well as strikes in Syria in retaliation for the killings of US forces.

But like Bush, Trump cares little about UN or other international conventions on war.

The Trump administration argues that Maduro faced a warrant for drug charges in the United States, but Maduro’s government is a UN member, even if most Western countries consider him illegitimate following elections riddled with irregularities.

Senator Ruben Gallego, a Democrat and Iraq war veteran, called Venezuela the “second unjustified war in my lifetime,” although he agreed Maduro was a dictator.

“It’s embarrassing that we went from the world cop to the world bully in less than one year. There is no reason for us to be at war with Venezuela,” he said on X.

In one irony, the latest Nobel Peace Prize, so coveted by Trump, went to Venezuela’s opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, whose name the US president did not appear initially to know.

Trump, however, has won one peace prize since taking office.

Fifa’s president, Gianni Infantino, presented Trump last month with a prize from football’s governing body ahead of the US co-hosting the World Cup.

Infantino said that Trump, who has taunted migrants from developing countries and threatened violence against domestic opponents, was being recognised for his “exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world.” — AFP

Explainer: A history of US interventions in Latin America

PARIS, Jan 3 — The United States, which today attacked Venezuela and is said to have abducted its president, has a long history of military interventions and support for dictatorships in Latin America.

On multiple occasions the late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez and his successor Nicolas Maduro — who Donald Trump says is now in US hands — accused Washington of backing coup attempts.

Here are the main US interventions in Latin America since the Cold War.

1954: Guatemala

On June 27, 1954, Colonel Jacobo Arbenz Guzman, president of Guatemala, was driven from power by mercenaries trained and financed by Washington, after a land reform that threatened the interests of the powerful US company United Fruit Corporation (later Chiquita Brands).

In 2003, the United States officially acknowledged the CIA’s role in this coup, in the name of fighting communism.

1961: Cuba

From April 15 to 19, 1961, 1,400 anti-Castro militants trained and financed by the CIA attempted to land at the Bay of Pigs, 250 kilometres (155 miles) from Havana, but failed to overthrow Fidel Castro’s communist regime.

The fighting left killed more than a hundred on each side.

1965: Dominican Republic

In 1965, citing a “communist threat”, the United States sent Marines and paratroopers to Santo Domingo to crush an uprising in support of Juan Bosch, a leftist president ousted by generals in 1963.

1970s: Support for dictatorships

Washington backed several military dictatorships, seen as a bulwark against left-wing armed movements in a world divided by Cold War rivalries.

It actively assisted Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet during the September 11, 1973 coup against leftist president Salvador Allende.
Allende was murdered

US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger supported the Argentine junta in 1976, encouraging it to quickly end its “dirty war,” according to US documents declassified in 2003.

At least 10,000 Argentine dissidents disappeared.

In the 1970s and 1980s, six dictatorships (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil) joined forces to eliminate left-wing opponents under “Operation Condor,” with tacit US support.

1980s: Wars in Central America

In 1979, the Sandinista rebellion overthrew dictator Anastasio Somoza in Nicaragua. US president Ronald Reagan, concerned about Managua’s alignment with Cuba and the USSR, secretly authorised the CIA to provide $20 million in aid to the Contras (the Nicaraguan counterrevolutionaries), partly funded by the illegal sale of arms to Iran.

The Nicaraguan civil war, which ended in April 1990, claimed 50,000 lives.

Reagan also sent military advisers to El Salvador to crush the rebellion of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN, far left) in a civil war (1980–1992) that resulted in 72,000 deaths.

1983: Grenada

On October 25, 1983, US Marines and Rangers intervened on the island of Grenada after prime minister Maurice Bishop was assassinated by a far-left junta and as Cubans were expanding the airport, presumably to accommodate military aircraft.

At the request of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Reagan launched Operation “Urgent Fury” with the stated goal of protecting a thousand US citizens.

The operation, widely deplored by the UN General Assembly, ended on November 3, with more than a hundred dead.

1989: Panama

In 1989, after a contested election, president George W. Bush ordered a military intervention in Panama, resulting in the surrender of general Manuel Noriega, a former collaborator of US intelligence, who was wanted by US justice.

Some 27,000 GIs took part in Operation “Just Cause”, which officially left 500 dead.

NGOs put the toll significantly higher, in the thousands.
