Nechemya Weberman, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man from Brooklyn, could be set free from prison after being sentenced to 103 years for child molestation following a court hearing set to take place next month, The New York Times reported on Saturday.

According to the NYT, the court hearing next month will decide if his sentence will be shortened.

Weberman was sentenced in 2012 in a case that brought to light sexual abuse in the local ultra-Orthodox community, and, according to the report, he was handed the longest sentence for sexually abusing a child in the hasidic community.

Five years later, in 2017, Eric Gonzalez was elected as Brooklyn's district attorney. Gonzalez believed the sentence that Weberman received was too long and supported a shorter one.

In the Jewish community, supporters of the victims of Weberman's abuse were subsequently outraged. They argued that the district attorney had cowed to years of pressure from the Satmar hasidic voting bloc.

The message Gonzalez was sending was that “politics matters more than protecting children,” said Boorey Deutsch, the husband of the woman who Weberman abused when she was a girl.

“It sends a strong message to victims of, ‘Don’t even try. You don’t stand a chance against our power,'" Asher Lovy, the director of Za'akah, an organization that raises awareness of sexual abuse within the Jewish community, told the NYT.

The victim attended religious counseling with Weberman

The report noted that the victim of Weberman's abuse, who was 12 years old at the time, was attending religious counselling by Weberman after being referred by her school for violating Satmar's strict community rules.

Weberman charged the family $150 per hour for the 'counseling' sessions.

The victim subsequently reportedly testified in court that Weberman made her perform oral sex, with Weberman's lawyers arguing that she made up the allegations.

The court case was based on one victim's story; however, Weberman had multiple accusers, according to documents obtained by the NYT.

Weberman, however, was not charged in those cases.
