PETALING JAYA: An unemployed man was charged in the Kuala Terengganu magistrates’ court with vandalising a Buddha statue and breaking a glass box at a temple there.
Salim Yusof, 42, pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read before magistrate Iffah Nabihah Ishak today, Berita Harian reported.
He was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code with committing mischief by damaging the statue and breaking the box, both of which belong to the Terengganu Nam Ann Association.
He was accused of committing the offence at the premises on Jalan Kemajuan, Kuala Terengganu, at 7.15pm on Aug 29.
If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.
The accused was granted bail of RM4,000 and the court fixed Oct 9 for case mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Amalina Najwa Ali prosecuted while the accused was represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
