PETALING JAYA
The Save Musang King Alliance (Samka) has rejected the Raub police chief’s statement that its gathering tomorrow has not received police approval, and urged farmers to support the event.

Its president, Wilson Chang, urged the public to attend the

Grand Farmers’ Assembly 907
to put pressure on the government to
end all discrimination against farmers who have been in the durian trade for decades
.

Yesterday, Raub police chief Shahril Abdul Rahman said stern action would be taken against anyone attending the gathering at Dataran Pasar Sungai Klau as the organisers did not obtain permission from the owner of the venue, as required under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

He said a 10-day notice period was required under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

However, Chang cited a statement by Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Hussain that the notice period had been altered in the 2019 amendment to the Act to five days.

Samka had said earlier it had handed police its notification for the planned protest on Aug 30, giving eight days’ notice.

It also said the gathering aimed to draw attention to the difficulties faced by Raub durian farmers, and demand that authorities lease land to them for planting and selling durians.

It claimed that since a judicial review application by 186 durian farmers over an eviction notice by the Pahang government in 2020 was rejected by the Kuantan High Court in April, the farmers had been facing pressure and disruptions from the state government, consortiums and enforcement agencies.
