PETALING JAYA
Two vehicles belonging to the Malaysian Battalion 850-11 (Malbatt 850-11) serving with the United Nations Interim Force (Unifil) in Lebanon were attacked by a group of civilians on Wednesday.

The Malaysian Armed Forces said the incident involved three officers and seven enlisted personnel returning to Camp Marakah after completing a mission at Unifil headquarters at Camp Shama.

Two Fitted for Radio (FFR) vehicles were caught in an unusual traffic jam on the Tes Road-Burj Al Qibli route in Tyre,
the forces said in a statement today.

“At the time, civilians were managing traffic due to the influx of ambulances and fire trucks.

Suddenly, about 30 civilians attempted to stop the Malbatt vehicles, throwing rocks and puncturing the tyres with sharp objects.

To avoid further escalation, the commanding officer instructed both vehicles to pull over at a safe location and wait for assistance from the Lebanese Armed Forces.

The LAF arrived shortly after and successfully defused the situation,
 the Malaysian Armed Forces said.

They also coordinated a loader to transport the vehicles and Malbatt personnel back to Camp Marakah.

All personnel returned safely to the camp. No injuries were reported, although both vehicles were damaged,

Malbatt will continue its routine duties as mandated by Unifil. We urge the public not to speculate on the incident, as it could harm the image of the armed forces and the defence ministry,
 the forces said.

The statement comes after a video showing civilians throwing rocks at two Malbatt vehicles went viral on social media.
