Kiev Symphony Orchestra granted asylum in the German city of Monheim am Rhein

From 'MF' (thanks):

“We've found a temporary home.” Germany has granted asylum to the Kiev Symphony Orchestra

The Kiev Symphony Orchestra, about two-thirds composed of men of mobilization age, was granted asylum in the German city of Monheim am Rhein in North Rhine-Westphalia. This was reported by the city's news portal. According to the publication, a total of 130 Ukrainians, including 73 orchestra musicians, will receive asylum.

The Kiev Symphony Orchestra, in its entirety, has refused to return to Kiev and asked for political asylum in Germany. Isn't Ukriane the land of "Freedom and Democracy"?

Monheim am Rhein becomes temporary home for the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra

The symphony orchestra from the Ukrainian capital is to be based in the city on the Rhine for three years

    Monheimer Kulturwerke / Torsten Grieger

The city of Monheim am Rhein will employ the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra from summer 2024 and integrate it into the municipal subsidiary Monheimer Kulturwerke GmbH. The 73 active musicians, accompanied by staff and family members, will come to the city on the Rhine for an expected three years at the invitation of Mayor Daniel Zimmermann and Martin Witkowski, artistic director and managing director of Monheimer Kulturwerke. Here they will find a new temporary home.

Since February 2022, after the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra has been touring abroad. It is a state orchestra with a rich, almost fifty-year history, communicating and presenting symphonic music to audiences in Ukraine and abroad in a contemporary manner, guided by special beliefs: the highest quality of performances, accessibility, preservation of Ukraine's cultural heritage and the promotion of new symphonic works.

  3. Between 1939 and 1945, 60 members of the London Symphony Orchestra served in the British Armed Forces, 7 of them were killed in action, 20 were wounded, some were never able to play music again.

    THAT is duty, honour, country.
