PAS slams minister's canteen operation directive during Ramadan

The PAS ulama wing has accused Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek of triggering an “unnecessary” polemic by assuring that school canteens will continue operating during Ramadan.

According to its leader Ahmad Yahaya, the ministry should instead focus on educating Muslim students about the importance of fasting and their non-Muslim counterparts to respect the practice.

“This can happen in a harmonious way without a directive for canteens to remain open when (Muslim) students are observing the Ramadan month.

“This does not mean that we are stopping the non-Muslim students from eating during the day, but it is also a form of ‘education’ for them to respect the Ramadan month since their schooling years,” Ahmad (above), who is also Pokok Sena MP, said in a statement today.

He added that non-Muslim students can bring food and drinks to school and consume them in a space allocated for the purpose.

“That would suffice, without the need for a directive for canteens to remain open, which seems a bit excessive.”

Ahmad further accused Fadhlina of hastily issuing the directive without respecting the Ramadan month herself.

“Matters like this only create unnecessary polemic and is a waste of time.”

Yesterday, Fadhlina assured that school canteens will continue operating during Ramadan.

However, schools must provide proper guidance and education for non-Muslims to understand their Muslim peers’ need to fast in Ramadan, she said.

  1. funny to see pas do not even know the true meaning of fasting, it is about self discipline, a test of will power, seeking closeness with God and expressing kindness and generosity, its never about demanding respect from others, for that, you have to earn it

  2. A school canteen should be kept open during the fasting month as it has been the standard practice unless the school has 100% Muslim pupils.. There could be non-Muslim pupils and non-Muslim teachers who need to eat the food prepared by the operator (even though they are Muslims). Some pupils do not bring their own food to school every day and they rely on the food provided by the canteen. The school may allocate a place for pupils who bring their own food to eat. Remember a few years ago when the pupils in a primary school had to eat inside their 'bilik air.' It became a national issue.
