Why was tycoon’s son ‘let off hook’, says Anwar

Anwar Ibrahim told those attending the ceramah that the tycoon’s son had been arrested for not just doing drugs but also growing and distributing it.

SIMPANG RENGGAM: For the second consecutive day, Anwar Ibrahim questioned the release of a tycoon’s son following the latter’s arrest for a major drug-related offence.

Speaking at a PKR ceramah tonight, the party president said the tycoon’s son had been arrested by police for not just using drugs but also growing and distributing it.

“Then after negotiations, he was released.

“Why was the son of a prominent figure let off the hook?” the Pakatan Harapan chairman said.

Anwar was believed to be alluding to a case which had first been highlighted by whistleblower Twitter account Edisi Siasat last month.

Anwar maintained that the rule of law must be upheld.

On the other hand, the innocent should not be punished or treated cruelly, regardless of their political affiliations, he said.

Edisi Siasat had claimed that although the tycoon’s son was arrested in 2019 under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act for being involved with a large quantity of drugs, the case was classified as NFA (no further action) by then attorney-general Tommy Thomas.

Thomas has since denied that he had taken a bribe when handling the case and said he had reduced the charges against the tycoon’s son after studying the representations made to the Attorney-General’s Chambers by his lawyers.

In the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, the Port Dickson MP referred to the case when warning Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob against insinuating that the PH administration carried out selective prosecutions.

He then challenged the latter to get the attorney-general to reopen the cases which were said to have been ignored or dropped.

Tonight, Anwar said he told Ismail that if the former attorney-general (Thomas) was biased or had protected corrupt ministers, they should be probed.
