Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor has announced the dissolution of the state legislative assembly, paving the way for the 17th state election.

The announcement was made during a ceremony with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) elected representatives at the Banquet Hall, Level 3, Menara Kinabalu this afternoon.

The dissolution is effective today.

"This will give power to Sabahans to use their democratic rights to determine who will govern them," he said.

Hajiji explained that the move was in line with the constitutional process, marking the end of the 16th assembly’s five-year term.

During the press conference, the now-caretaker chief minister highlighted his administration’s record since taking office in 2020, pointing to efforts under the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan to improve agriculture, industry, tourism, human capital, public well-being, and infrastructure.

“Over the past five years, we have worked tirelessly to bring meaningful change and growth to the state and its people. We have taken bold and responsible steps to address longstanding issues, particularly water, electricity and critical infrastructure,” he said.

Seeking fresh mandate

While emphasising progress made in economic growth, job creation and social welfare, Hajiji added that the state government is seeking a fresh mandate to continue its agenda.

“Our work is not yet finished. With this dissolution, we seek a fresh mandate from the people to continue the efforts we have begun - building a stronger, more prosperous, and united Sabah for all,” he said.

The Election Commission is expected to determine the polling date within 60 days of the dissolution.

Political parties are now expected to finalise their candidate line-ups as Sabah prepares for what is set to be a hotly contested election.
