ALOR SETAR, June 30 ― The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will conduct a study and thorough investigation into the issue of a girl, 11, who is alleged to have married a 41-year-old man in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said she had received a report on the case and asked the Welfare Services Department to meet with the girl’s mother to get more information.

“A thorough investigation must also be conducted because it involves the state Syariah Enactment.

“We also have to look into why it happened. Was it caused by poverty, education, family issues or other problems,” she told reporters after visiting the Sungai Kedah/Anak Bukit Flood Mitigation Plan project here today.

What problems could there be to justify a 41 year old man marrying an 11-year girl?

How could poverty, education (in Malaysia?), or family issues allow or justify a middle age man marrying a lil' girl who's not even in her teens?

If the shocking incident is true, the man should be arrested immediately and severely caned, and/or charged with paedophilia.

But Wan Azizah is well known for her recent attempt to merge Mother's Day with Fathers Day into a single celebration to be called Parents' Day.

Maybe she will again decide to merge the 11 year old and the man's 34 year old wife into a single identity, which will then be celebrated as a marriage between a 41 year old middle age man and a 45 year old "woman" (who is thus of mature age)?

PETALING JAYA: The foreign ministry has directed several heads of Malaysian missions overseas whose appointments were politically related to the former Barisan Nasional (BN) government to vacate their posts, a report said today.

Political appointees to ambassadorial posts are common throughout the world, especially in the USA, where large political donors to political parties are rewarded when the party they backed wins in an election, with the prestigious positions which those donors crave for.

In Australia too, political appointees are quite commonplace. Examples were Liberal Party's Alexander Downer (a failed Liberal Party PM-aspirant) as High Commissioner to the UK, Labor's Kim Beasley (another failed but Labor Party PM-aspirant) as Ambassador to the USA, and National Party's Tim Fisher (former Aus DPM and a staunch Catholic) as Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican).

But in those countries, politically-appointed ambassadors weren't and haven't been withdrawn when the parties they backed lose an election. They were allowed to finished their assigned tours, and in some cases, even had their tours extended if they did excellent jobs for their countries. Yes, they were/are considered as exemplary citizens of their countries in the eyes of the host nations and the world.

Envoys aren't appointed on whims and fancies but through considerable sets of protocols which includes the proposed envoys' acceptance by their host nations. To suddenly withdraw those envoys would not only alarm the host nations but also insult the latter's earlier acceptance.

Let me discuss with you a couple of examples, namely:

(a) Datin Blanche O’Leary - she was formerly High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea (PNG), appointed in 2009. That was nearly 10 years ago. She has since (in 2013) been appointed Ambassador to Finland.

Alas for her, she is the wife of Kayveas of the now-questionable myPPP, but is considered as a BN person or a BN appointee.

(b) Bernard Dompok - member of UPKO, former CM Sabah and former minister (PM's department & Plantation Industries and Commodities) until 2013. He, as a Catholic, was appointed Ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican) in 2015.

Blanche O’Leary would have served 5 years as Ambassador to Finland and would have come to the end of her normal 5-year tour whilst Dompok has been envoy to the Vatican for about 3 years.

Rather than present a nasty mean-spirited picture to the world that these two were recalled by their nation because of their political affiliations, it would have been more dignified and gracious to just allow, in Blanche O’Leary's case, her tour of duty to end without any unnecessary adversarial attribution, and in Dompok's case, for his tour to be completed in April 2020 (5 years tour and also as per an earlier extension by the BN government).

Likewise with the others.

The new PH government has shown its politically-divisive nature even in such areas as the field of diplomacy where Malaysian envoys (irrespective of their domestic political affiliations) should be upheld as exemplary Malaysian citizens in the eyes of the world, as Western and more mature nations do with their political appointees.

We don't want our Malaysia to reflect the vindictive meanness of Mahathir towards our envoys in the way he has been against Najib, Anwar, AAB and KJ.

In 1981, a company namely Maminco Sdn Bhd was established soon after Mahathir became prime minister, seeks to control the price of tin on the London Stock Exchange. Maminco take out loans amounting to RM1.5 billion from Bank Bumiputra but in debt when tin prices fell at last.

Another company called Makuwasa Sdn Bhd is established to cover losses that Maminco. The new shares supposedly created and reserved for the poor natives, was converted to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), to sell the shares and the low market price to indemnify Maminco. Taxpayers lost about RM1.6 billion in the Maminco scandal.

Past Scandals – The Maminco-Makuwasa Affair

Estimated losses: RM 1.6 Billion

Malaysia used to be the world’s leading tin producer accounting for 31% of the world’s output. It was a major contributor to the country’s economy providing employment for more than 40,000 people.

In 1985 the world tin market crashed with the price plunging by 50%. Many tin mines in Malaysia had to close as it was no longer economical to operate the tin mines. One of the factors that contributed to the collapse of the tin market is the ill-fated attempt by the Malaysian government to corner the tin market and to prop up the tin price.

This is the Maminco scandal that is usually found at the top of the lists of scandals and bail-outs plaguing Malaysia since Mahathir became the PM. This is probably because it was the earliest scandal occurring immediately after Mahathir became the PM in 1981. Although not the largest loss in terms of value, it still caused a loss estimated to be RM1.6 billion or more.

In this crooked scheme, a RM2 company Maminco Sdn. Bhd. was set up and was used to secretly buy tin future contracts and physical tin in order to push up prices on the London Metal Exchange. To finance its covert activities, Maminco obtained financing from Bank Bumiputra – naturally. At one point, this RM2 company was borrowing astronomical amounts from the bank – as much as RM1.5 billion.

Initially, they succeeded in pushing up the tin price artifically. But the higher prices stimulated increased tin production and resulted in the US releasing its strategic stockpile. The tin price could not be maintained at the artificially high level for long and eventually it collapsed.

Undertaking this Maminco scheme is already bad enough. But instead of admitting their mistake, Mahathir and his merry band cooked up another scheme to hide the losses incurred by Maminco from the Malaysian public. Another RM2 company called Makuwasa was set up.

The idea was new shares reserved for bumiputras allocated to EPF were diverted to Makuwasa at par value! Can you believe this? These cheaply acquired shares could then be sold for a profit at market price! Instant profits made by Makuwasa can then be used to cover the Maminco’s losses. Effectively, Makuwasa is used to raid the savings of Malaysians to help pay for Maminco’s losses!

In 1986 Mahathir publicly admitted that Makuwasa was created to recoup the government’s losses from the Maminco debacle and to repay its loans to Bank Bumiputra.

Mahathir clamped down on freedom of speech in UMNO

PETALING JAYA: Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (pic) claims it was former party president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who clamped down on freedom of speech within the party, but says he will reinstate it if he wins in the upcoming party polls.

In an interview with Malaysiakini, the Gua Musang MP, who will be contesting the presidency in Saturday's (June 30) polls, said it was Dr Mahathir who made it compulsory for delegates to have their scripts approved before debating in Umno annual general assemblies.

"This practice has been there for 25 years. It was (the doing) of Dr Mahathir.

"The delegates (list) needed to be verified by the supreme council before they can speak at the AGM. Their speech scripts must obtain the approval too," he was quoted as saying.

He later set up Party Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, which is now part of the Pakatan Harapan Government.

In the interview, Tengku Razaleigh claimed that during the era of Umno former presidents Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, members could speak freely.

In light of this, the 81-year-old Kelantan prince said during his campaign rounds, he heard many of its grassroots members were demanding for freedom of speech.

Hence, he wanted party delegates to voice out on any issue they wished to, including those similar to 1MDB.

"What's wrong with that (bringing up something similar to 1MDB)? As long as it does not infringe on the standing orders, then it is okay.

"They can speak anything (against me). I will respond when it is my turn," he said.

PH wants an unconstitutional security law?

FMT - NSC Act violates constitution, says ex-judge:

PETALING JAYA: A retired judge has called on the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to repeal the National Security Council (NSC) Act, following the defence minister’s announcement yesterday that it would be reviewed to ensure that it does not become a political tool.

Gopal Sri Ram said the NSC was unconstitutional and must be repealed as it had bypassed the Conference of Rulers.

He added that a federal law that amended the constitution to do away with royal assent in certain circumstances was itself unconstitutional.

“Also, the NSC is a security statute and must comply with Article 149 of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement.

If the government wanted such a law, he added, it must be redrafted to comply with the constitution.

“The previous administration obviously had no respect for the rule of law. The present PH government respects the rule of law. Therefore it should act accordingly,” he said.

Yesterday, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said the government would look seriously at the NSC and consider whether to retain or abolish it.

He also made it clear that the NSC should not be pressured or influenced into supporting any political party.

The NSC was established by an Act of Parliament passed in December 2015. It was fiercely opposed by PH MPs who called the legislation a “death sentence” on democracy in Malaysia.

Among other things, the law empowers the NSC to declare a state of emergency in a designated area; grants unprecedented powers to security forces to make arrests and conduct forced evacuation in the area; and grants all members of the council and those operating under it complete exemption from legal liabilities and prosecution.

Former prime minister Najib Razak said the government needed the NSC to provide adequate powers for the security forces and all relevant government agencies to respond to threats to national security.

PH leader Anwar Ibrahim has challenged the legality of the NSC, with the matter now pending in the Federal Court.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail recently made a very important decision for the future of every family unit in our beloved Malaysia.

She has decided to merge Father's Day and Mother's Day into a single celebration, which will be called Parents' Day.

Brilliant! Simply brilliant!

Thanks to Kak Wan, now we do not have to spend money on lunch, dinner and gifts for two separate occasions – we can take both our parents out for a single celebration on the first Sunday of July!

Now, why the heck did no other previous minister think of this?

In fact, I think Kak Wan should not stop at merging these two celebrations. While she’s at it, I think she should also consider merging Children’s Day, Grandparent’s Day and Valentine’s Day and then combining it with Parents' Day – we can all call it Happy Family Day!

How does that sound?

Oh dear. Looks like Pakatan Harapan has found its own Ahmad Maslan. In case you have forgotten the infamous guy, he is the BN ex-MP who recommended the people to cook zero-GST fried rice and take up more than one job to cope with the rising cost of living.

And just like him, today we have a qualified medical professional as a minister who is trying to improve the state of our country and its people by doing something totally useless and insignificant.

Clearly not practising her profession has affected her professionalism. Or perhaps she is desperate to be seen doing something, apart from being the shadow of her husband?

Seriously Kak Wan, have you got nothing better to do?

Wakakaka, I deem FA Abdul's description of Princess Iron Fan's role "a minister who is trying to improve the state of our country and its people by doing something totally useless and insignificant" as the BEST political statement 2018 thus far, wakakaka.

Wan Azizah should take note of what FA Abdul has suggested for her work list, as follows:

The fact is, after years of chanting “Ubah!”, the people chose Pakatan Harapan to bring in the winds of change. God knows the rakyat are hoping for change and improvement, not only in our policies but also in the mindset of our leaders.

Sadly, from time to time, our new batch of elected politicians keep on reminding us of those who’ve been kicked out for behaving very similarly to them.

Kak Wan and the other leaders in our government are supposed to be the pillars of strength of our nation. Their voice, advice and action have a great influence upon the people, for we often look up to them for hope and words of wisdom. And for this important reason, it is vital for the leaders like Kak Wan to make a sound judgement for their every move.

Yes, our parents play a very important role in our lives. And celebrating them, be it separately or together, shows how much we honour their sacrifices and commitments. However, we do not need our ministers to be meddling with such issues when there are many other crucial matters to be dealt with.

More important things

I have hereby taken the liberty to list down a few matters which Kak Wan, as the minister of Women, Family and Community Development can look into (perhaps when she is done merging Teacher’s Day and Labour Day).

• Look into implementing a National Sex Offenders Register. Enable every citizen to search for the latest information and location of convicted sex offenders.
• Formulate effective policies to curb child-dumping. Fact: More than 690 babies have been abandoned at birth in Malaysia between 2011 and 2017.
• Track down unregistered nurseries which employ untrained caregivers, thus contributing to child abuse and child neglect cases in the country.
• Review the 146 domestic violence cases which have occurred in the first six months of this year, including the 30 percent of cases involving male victims.
• Look into dealing with child alimony defaulters.
• Eliminate gender-based biases in employment.
• Introduce oral contraceptive education to curb teen pregnancy.
• Prevent underage marriage.
• Look into introducing a child-care policy for workplaces in order to ensure participation of women after marriage.
• Make education accessible for all children (including those without sufficient documents).

The Women, Family and Community Development ministry is a very important ministry simply because it focuses not only on women but also fathers, children, families and communities.

It is a ministry that is responsible for the well-being of everyone who makes up a society including the elderly, the disabled, the homeless and also refugees.

And Kak Wan, being a mother who brought up her children all by herself during her husband’s absence, having to lead her family and face some tough pressing issues alone, in my honest opinion may be the best person to lead the ministry – if and only if, she can stop coming up with these half-baked ideas and really puts her mind to it.

Well, if Princess Iron Fan has no clue how to start, get her deputy minister to do the hard yards then, or make her deputy into a full blown Minister for Women, Family and Community Development.

SEPANG, June 28 — All actions taken by the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) so far have been in line with existing rules and regulations, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today.

This was in response to allegations brought forward by two privately-owned charter airlines, Eaglexpress Air Charter Sdn Bhd and Suasa Airlines Sdn Bhd, which demanded that Mavcom be shut down for hindering the growth of the local aviation industry.

“Airlines have to comply with regulations and conditions, so if Mavcom has made any decision, they have to stand by it.

“I was also briefed that all action taken was in line with the regulations. If they feel they were unfairly treated, then its up to them to take any further actions,” he said.

Well said, Minister. I was worried that the new government might have felt compelled to do what some industry blokes out there believe you would or could likely want to do, sweeping everything clean with a new broom regardless.

But go by rules and regulations and you would be fine. Good job!

Wakakaka, yes, my job is not to just tear down ministers but also to praise those who stand by their staff when those staff have been doing things by the rules and regs.

Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu today described the law that had been criticised for giving the prime minister absolute power as a “good vehicle”, which was only made political by the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) administration.

"We are looking to review, because NSC actually is a good vehicle, especially for government officers to serve the government.

“What we have to control is, we don’t want it to become a party's [tool] where we try to instigate, to pressure them to support Amanah or to support Bersatu or to support DAP,” he said in an interview with select media here.

Mat, either you are very naive or a big bullshitter. You can't be both so are you a naive Defence Minister?

You have just admitted that the BN made political use of the National Security Council (NSC) Act 2016, so please tell us what is there to prevent the PH coalition from misusing it too?

And please don't swear PH will be more honorable than BN, because the temptation will remain - and you know what happened to God's beloved, namely, Adam and Eve, Jacob, King David, etc, when temptations lie in their paths?

Get rid of it as your coalition has promised so that all may actually avoid the temptation of using that repressive law.

We know Mahathir had earlier voiced his reluctance to remove the Fake News legislation, so is this another of his "reluctance", as voiced by you (under instructions)?

Two student leaders who were punished by their universities for dissidence told a forum on academic freedom here that they expect nothing less than total autonomy for universities, and they were optimistic that the man blamed for the laws that fettered academia will respond accordingly. [...]

From 1975 to 2012, the former BN government amended the law five times, initially increasing prohibitions on students’ activities on and off campus, Fortify Rights noted in a statement issued to accompany its 2017 annual report on rights infringement in campuses for the past one year.

The law outlined penalties for those found involved in activism, among others by imposing stiff penalties for violations that also included potential imprisonment under the 1975 amendment.

Repercussions of Guan Eng's arrogant faux pas

NST - Guan Eng's action will only fuel people's hatred - Pas' Takiyuddin:

KOTA BARU: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng continue to receive flak today for issuing official statements in Chinese, this time from a Pas leader who said such move will only fuel hatred among the people.

Its secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said doing so could cause anxiety and suspicion, including disrupting unity in a multi-ethnic society of Malaysia.

Lim was slammed recently after he issued a statement related to the Tun Razak Exchange in three languages - Malay, English and Chinese.

"This is something unprecedented or never been done in the history of the country's administration, that a minister publishes a government official statement in Chinese even as a translation.

"Pas also views Lim's reply on the issue on Facebook, which was only in Chinese to defend his move, as arrogant," he said in a statement.

PAS was once Guan Eng's (and other DAP pollies) favourite party, next to the DAP itself, wakakaka.

In fact, Nga Kor Ming, for all his alleged Hew Kuan Yau-like verbal bigotry, used to phone allahyarham Tuan Guru Dato' Bentara Setia Haji Nik Abdul Aziz Bin Nik Mat to confirm Quranic phrases he (David Nga) could use to fling at and intimidate his BN foes, wakakaka.

And this was what gave the late Pak Haji the false impression the DAP leaders except for Karpal Singh were ready to accept and even embrace Islam.

But since their acrimonious parting post 2014 which came to the fore following the Kajang by-election (thanks to too-smart-by-half Rafizi Ramli), the DAP is Satan's nest in the eyes of PAS, and vice versa.

Don't need to be a motor-car-scientist (wakakaka) to know that PAS would eventually pounce on Guan Eng's polygot faux pas, a faux pas imbued with the ultra arrogance of also a too-smart-by-half semi-apotheosized Guan Eng.

But Takiyuddin Hassan has not been totally wrong, in that Guan Eng's arrogance would arouse paranoid suspicions among Malays that the alleged Chinese-led Pakatan Harapan would see the rise and overwhelming dominance of Chinese political power in Malaysia, even if it is ridiculous in reality.

Thus Guan Eng's arrogant act in his unprecedented "Ni hao ma" statement has given unwanted fuel to ignite such ignoramus amongst the Malay community, already suffering from an ethnic siege-mentality, to believe the worst in anything Chinese.

It doesn't help when Malay heads of GLCs and many government divisions have been or will be sacked, when a Chinese is in charge of a Finance Ministry on a trimming-to-be-lean vengeance, even in the FM is not personally responsible for the downsizing. And a Chinese Minister of Transport complaining about a MAVCOM Head getting a salary of RM75K per month would also sound like a green eyed Chinese ogre.

But apart from that, what effect will such language-instigated racial turbulence have on vernacular education, especially the Pakatan manifesto-promise of recognising the UEC?

Finance Minister?

For the last several weeks I have been wondering what's the difference between a Finance Minister and an Economics Minister?

Economics and financial studies overlap and influence each other. For example, economics study helps us understand how changes in national income, inflation, economic growth, and interest rates impact the markets and stocks, and also how changes in monetary policy by Bank Negara can impact the economy.

Aren't these the job of the Finance Minister? Or, should they be those of the new Economics Minister?

Thus why have two ministers looking after the same area?

Mahathir might have appointed Lim Guan Eng the Finance Minister but to date, the power to make financial and economic policies have been assumed by the Council of Elders which derived its unconstitutional powers from Mahathir.

Then, is the Finance Ministry (Lim Guan Eng as its so-called head) still in charge of the most important GLCs and agencies such as PETRONAS, Pemodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), FELDA, Tabung Haji, PNB, Khazanah Nasional, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Kumpulan Wang Amanah Pencen (KWAP)? 

Or have the above GLCs, previously under the control of the Finance Minister, been taken out and put under Azmin Ali’s Economic Ministry?

Think first lah - I am a pribumi; is Guan Eng? 

Does the Finance Minister even know that Mahathir is contemplating currency changes, which he has announced to the world? Guan Eng is a dunggu if he doesn't.

I wonder what the Finance Minister does apart from obeying Mahathir's instructions to expose Najib's alleged sins, crimes and etc?

Maybe Guan Eng is just a book-keeper who scours the files for Najib's financial misdeeds so as to expose them as per Mahathir's orders?
