Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said police have confirmed that there are no racial elements in the case of a male student stabbing a Form Four girl to death at a school in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, today.

This was according to the Selangor police chief, who also confirmed that the police are investigating criminal elements of the case, Amirudin added.

"This matter will be a priority in the state executive council meeting, and several measures, including safety efforts and student mental health support, will be decided immediately to ensure the safety of all our children in school," he said in a statement today.

It was reported that the incident occurred around 9.30am when a Form Two student allegedly brought a sharp object - believed to be a knife - to school before attacking his schoolmates.

Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect also stabbed other students during the incident.

Public to be informed

Amirudin said the public will be informed of developments.

"Schools should be the safest place for our children, and the state government will work with the police, the Education Ministry, and the local community so that the level of security in all schools throughout the state is immediately improved," the Gombak MP added.

Separately, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said her ministry has formed a special committee to thoroughly, transparently, and fairly investigate the case.

"A team of counsellors and counselling teachers have been mobilised to implement psychosocial support interventions for students, teachers, and all staff at the school," she said in a statement today.

Both she and Amirudin expressed their condolences to the family of the student who died.

Other disturbing cases

This latest case came barely two weeks after another disturbing incident in Malacca, where four teenagers were arrested for allegedly raping a Form Three student in a classroom on Oct 2.

Police obtained a six-day remand order against the suspects on Oct 11. They are being investigated under Section 375B of the Penal Code for gang rape.

Two days earlier, Perikatan Nasional lawmakers urged authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the death of a Standard Four pupil who was found unconscious in a school toilet in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan, earlier this month and later pronounced dead.

PN chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan said the probe must establish whether the boy was already dead when discovered.

On Oct 3, Negeri Sembilan police chief Alzafny Ahmad said a post-mortem revealed the 10-year-old died from pressure applied to his neck, with no other injuries found.
