SINGAPORE, Oct 16 — An Indonesian domestic helper who filed a false police report accusing her employer’s husband of rape in a desperate attempt to end their affair has been sentenced to one week in jail.
The woman, who cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the man's identity, pleaded guilty on Oct 14 to one charge of giving false information to a police officer, The Straits Times reported.
The court heard that the helper was hired in May 2023 to care for the family’s infant son, and an affair with the husband began in September 2024.
Feeling guilty and suspecting the man's wife knew about their relationship, she decided to make the false report to end it.
On Feb 25, she lodged a police report claiming the man had sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions.
However, later that same day, during a police interview at the hospital, she admitted she had lied.
Her confession came shortly after the man, who was being questioned in a separate room, told police the sexual acts had been consensual.
In mitigation, the woman’s lawyer argued that her client’s offence was an act of desperation and that she did not sustain the lie for a long period.
The lawyer also noted that the man was never arrested or placed on bail as a result of the false report.
For giving false information to a public officer, an offender can be jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.
